Even at the height of our rivalry with St. John's, I don't think I and other Hoyas had much -- if any -- animosity toward Carnesseca, unlike Boeheim, or -- later -- Calhoun and others. Congratulations to a GREAT rival, coach and spokesman for college ball (though maybe not for the Assn. of American Sweater Makers!) St. John's to honor Lou CarneseccaExcerpts NEW YORK -- Hall of Fame coach Lou Carnesecca will be honored by St. John's for his more than 50 years of service to the school... ..24 years with a 526-200 record and 24 postseason berths, 18 in the NCAA tournament. The Redmen reached the Final Four in 1985 when the team was led by All-Americans Chris Mullin and Walter Berry.
The school will present Carnesecca the St. Vincent de Paul Medal at Sunday's commencement.

Carnesecca....Great man, great coach. Had an opportunity to shake his hand during the '85 final four.

Good for him. My father taught at St. John's during his time (actually had Wennington in his class, plus other bball players). One time my father received a message that Louie wanted to see him. Of course, if professors receive a call from the coach, it is usually due to a bball player's grades. So my father was a bit apprehensive about going to see Louie. It turned out that my dad gave one of the bball players a D or F, and Louie wanted to thank him for giving him an honest grade.

Great story, Nevada. Louie is one of my all-time favorites.

What a telling story. I doubt you can find a handful of coaches today who would do the same thing.

Sad to say, probably true, Lizzie. And Ed, after that story, Louie had to be one of my favorite coaches (after JTII, of course )

Speaking of honoring him…

This is so, so long overdue. After Dave Gavitt, the success of the Big East Conference is due to John Thompson Jr. and Lou Carnesecca (along with Fagan and that guy at Lower Eastern Canada Community College).
