A few side bars off this thread to try and get some offseason discussion going:
1) Schedule - Happy to see Howard back on the schedule, we need a Cross-Town Rival and a schollie program that we can beat is perfect and respectable, why don't we also "play up" against Towson who although in the CAA is the worst of the worst in the CAA conference?
2) Game Day Environment - I went to the Alamo Bowl this year (Ok State v AZ) and truly enjoyed the halftime entertainment of the several HS bands that played at halftime, this was on top of the 2 Univ bands - but het ya’ gotta start somewhere!
Note - Not trying to bash our band to be clear, but I have to say the monetary support for our tiny band is on par with the FB program and the MSF, at least at Rice they have fun with it and openly recruit faculty to join / play and have fun with a small / unfunded band!
I digress - I am sure that if the school invited DC, VA, MD and especially Metro Catholic HS schools to "Play" at the Halftime Shows at GU, they would accept - likely happily! Why don’t we do this, the lack of anything at Halftime is a killer – people freak now without 10 FaceBook updates per minute – ya think they’re gonna make it through a halftime without beer or entertainment – let’s get real!
Also, smaller note - Band families travel and they travel in force, I expect 200 – 300 kids in two HS bands would bring 500 + people as fans each week to the game, sad if your TX - but 500 guaranteed attendees at GU home games - HUGE!
Questions - Are we too proud to ask HS to come play at GU? Does it cost too much money, I would expect it would be an “Honor” for a HS, but need to ask the question? Would our Band be Editeded? Are we just too lazy to ask?
3) Game Day Environment - How much does it cost to get a GU "Rock" Band and a quickly portable Stage / Sound System to allow them to play each week at Halftime? (Ha, Ha, that would require a sound system and we can’t even get a Scoreboard – I know, SAD)!
4) Game Day Environment – Honestly, Jack the Bulldog with the Tee-Shirt gun to run around at Halftime and create some fun – too expensive? Jack is already at the games, I think we have a gun for BB games, is it the Tee's that cost too much?
5) Game Day Environment - How much does it cost to go down to M-Street and ask the Gtown supported businesses to kick-in a few buck each home game? Maybe find some clever way to give away a “Free Dinner @ Tombs” , Bar 2, Bar 3, Bar 10, The Gap, Urban Outfitters, Ma & Pa's, Domino's and any other delivery Joint dependent on Gtown for their livelihood, Etc.? You include these businesses and about 50 other establishments around Gtown to give away a free coupon for each home game and your are talking some serious door prizes? I am not a Marketing Major – but this does not seem too difficult!
Big Note - There is sooooo much money in the Local Gtown Community (Bars, Restaurants, Hotels, Landlords, Embassies, Other Churches’ and /or Athletic Programs) , but no one asks for cash or support imaginatively, it's just an annual football player booster call - "I am XX, I play football - you gave this much last year - wanna match or exceed"? Really, I played, I made these calls and to me at the time it was worse than going to watch films or run sprints - players go to school to play and make grades - they are not trained in Cold Calling and frankly don’t care, cause if you are a JR or Sr in the program, you know that stadium is not gonna happen in your college lifetime?
Why have we done this type of stuff over the past 15 years, it does not take a “Degree from Georgetown” to figure out how to make a day at the game somewhat fund for a very low cost to the University – yet it has never happened? The deafening silence on the field at halftime is a killer and truly, truly makes the experience at the MSF less than what any typical American HS student sees on a typical Friday Night in their hometown regardless of size! It has to be apathy or worse desire to mire or die!
5) Tailgating – 80% of the other Universities in the Nation provide for this in some form or fashion, it draws crowds and makes the experience – but it’s been discussed on this board 1m times, enough said!!!!!!!
If we can’t have a place to play, can’t the school at least have fun watching the games?
