Beejay has been mentioned in passing in other posts, but given this from the Washington Post this AM (reprinted below, along with link), figure he now merits his own subject line. Recruiting Insider DeMatha's Anya is creating quite a stirIt was quite a crowd at Verizon Center to see the Abe Pollin City Title Game on Monday night, with roughly a dozen college coaches in attendance to see No. 4 DeMatha's 52-50 victory over No. 20 Theodore Roosevelt. While DeMatha juniors James Robinson and Jerami Grant were the main attraction for most recruiters - both already have several scholarship offers - it was sophomore center BeeJay Anya who again showed why he is quickly becoming one of the nation's most sought-after players in the class of 2013. Anya was terrific early, controlling the paint at both ends of the court. On offense, the Stags continually had Georgetown recruit Mikael Hopkins pass from the high post to Anya down low. Defensively, the 6-foot-8, 290-pound Anya was a force, blocking and altering multiple shots. Among colleges represented were Maryland, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Georgetown, George Mason, Xavier, Temple and St. John's. Ohio State assistant coach Dave D-ckerson, a former Maryland player, also was there. "Everybody loves BeeJay," DeMatha Coach Mike Jones said. "He's kind of gone from everybody on the East Coast knowing him to everybody knowing him. Before, Midwest and West Coast [coaches] maybe had heard about him, but now many have seen him and he's got a ton of buzz around him right now." www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2011/03/10/AR2011031000239.html

Might be generous by an inch, based on side by side looks with Hopkins, but hard to say. Plays like at least 6'7", I know that . .

I'd be shocked if he was even 6'7".
Plays big, but no where near as skilled as Sweets.

Pitt seems to make these body types work in their system.

He's 2013 so he's still only 16 or so, right? Could easily add another inch or two. If he's 290 at this point, he better watch his conditioning. That's what I'd heard about him, actually - effective player who would make a better college left tackle than college power forward. He's still so young though - plenty of time to get better.

Pitt seems to make these body types work in their system. Who besides DeJuan Blair? And that kid would've worked in a lot of systems.

Ontario Lett, Chevy Troutman. Not that they went pro but they were unheralded players who contributed.
But that was really a different system.

Chep3 - there has been about 5-6 beefy guys roll through Pitt over the past 10 years who have over-achieved and contributed to their success. The most recent example is on this year's Pitt team, McGee (a.k.a. Predator). And Nasir Robinson looks like he is next in line.

I see Lett and Troutman (I blocked those guys out of my memory), but I'm not sure Anya's body type sounds like either of McGhee or Robinson. Robinson is like Jerrelle's size, 6'5 somewhere between 220 and 240 right? And McGhee is like 6'10 right?

No offense to Anya--but my #1 priority as a fan in the '13 class starts/ends with Nerlens Noel. Maybe Anya can play alongside him--but Noel is the best post defender in country as a Soph in HS.

agreed. might be tough to beat out Uconn (if Calhoun is around by then) and Providence (if they hire Pat Skerry now), but that kid can make an immediate impact defensively.
hope Brennan is still working on him.

The common thread with those Pitt players is that they were/are relentless around the post. We need it. That said, Noel should be priority #1 for '13 at the position.

I'd like Noel in Blue and Grey as well , but I didn't get a good feelling from the last write-up I read on him (I believe it was on NBE.Com) .. At one point he claimed to favor the Hoyas. Depending on who Providence hires , they will be tough to beat. Anya needs a couple more inches , but he's gonna be a good player when it's all said and done. I also like Kennedy Meeks from N.C. Another big boy in the post and he's having a great year. Not to hi-jack Anya's thread , but G'Town will be involved with a few Bigs in that class. Also , I'm looking forward to seeing how Anya does in that 16&under USA team. Good run for him.

off to a very good start at Boo from all reports update from this week... boxofmess.com/2011/04/06/dematha-basketball-recruiting-updates/Anya has really blossomed during his sophmore year. His recruitment has heated up, like his play, just as he is expected to become a top 25 recruit from all the major recruiting services. Dematha Coach Mike Jones has said that “he is looking for a school that showcases its big men.” Anya’s list of schools, that he is interested in the most, include schools such as Syracuse, UConn, Texas, Georgetown, and Maryland, per Head Coach Mike Jones. Anya has said that Georgetown, Maryland, and Texas are recruiting him the hardest out of all the schools that are courting the blue chipper’s services.
