This is my first post since the injury to Chris Wright. It has taken me this long to process the disappointment that comes with losing arguably your most valuable player before the stretch run. A short while ago we were in the Top 10. Now we are a team a shambles, unworthy of an NCAA tourney bid if you look at current performance (not on total body of work).
When I posted a few weeks ago after our 10th conference win how good it felt to be a lock for the NCAA tournament and that we were just playing for conference and NCAA tourney seedings, I couldn't have imagined then what would happen to the team. If the Wright injury had happened one or two games prior, the team would probably be on the outside looking in right now. Thanks goodness we got to 10 wins in conference.
After seeing the Hoyas lose these last four games in poor fashion (except for portions of the Syracuse game), I am also feeling really down about next season. I think we are in for an extremely difficult 2011-12 campaign.
On the bright side, I too enjoyed some Texas-style brisket last night - it was quite tasty.

If you put ranch dressing on your brisket, I will have no choice but to shoot you in the face.
;D
You're right. The season is NOT over. We will be back in 8-9 days rested and healthy.
It does not mean the end of the regular season and the BE tournament were not huge disappointments, but there is no reason to give up.
(And those of you who DO want to give up, please do so alone in your basements and spare the rest of us your bile.)
As for next season, even though it is not time for that yet, any time you lose three senior starters, let alone starters who we have counted on as much this year as these three, you are going to have some adjustment problems. But I remain confident that the players coming back have the talent to do well.

I think that's true, but they all have to put in lots of work, and I think upgrading the frontcourt athleticism is paramount.

Ranch Dressing is correct! Next year will be very problematic as long as you are not wearing those rose colored glasses!

As optimistic as I try to stay, the way the non-seniors have "stepped up" since Chris's injury has me very, very worried about next season.

Look, the past few weeks have sucked, plain and simple.
But it's NCAA Tournament time! Let's pull together, hope for Chris' healthy return to the lineup, if it's in the cards, and save the doom and gloom for April!
GO HOYAS!!!!

Plenty of time to worry about next year. Let's worry about next week, until there is no longer a next week left in this season. Several years of iffy recruiting and some transfers have come home to roost. Unlike a few of the programs out there, we have not built up a stockpile of recruits who can cover for a down year in recruiting. I think that we can win a game or two but will need Chris.

Last year, I dont think we could have played any better than we did in the BET, but we still absolutely crapped out in the tourney, while teams like Washington, which barely deserved a discussion, played in the Sweet 16. There is no reason to think we cant be a team like Tennessee last year. They survived Gonzaga, got a huge break from our choke job, beat Ohio, and then played their best game of the year beating OSU. That's why the tournament is awesome. I absolutely cant wait.

What Jook said...
I couldn't agree more. The NCAA tourney (at least the first couple of rounds) seems to be all about match-ups. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Hoyas get a favorable path (and a little luck) and suddenly find themselves in the Sweet Sixteen (which IMHO should have been about right for this squad before the beginning of the season). I also wouldn't be surprised to go out in the first round, losing exactly the same way we've lost the last 4 games - even if Wright returns.
My hope - we play a team or two in rounds 1/2 that can't hold a jock for the top half of the Big East and that we beat the crap out of them. Unrealistic, yes. But I saw signs of life from Clark and Freeman yesterday. If Julian and Henry can put the past behind them and Wright is back in action, I think we can beat anyone in the country on any given night (perhaps with the exception of Ohio State, Kansas, Pitt and Notre Dame). No one else scares me. Of course, we can also lose to Ohio. Or Belmont. Or Oakland.

This is what I love about this board. 4 bad games and we're already whining about next year before the new guys even come to campus. Unreal. In any case, the comment about losing 3 seniors is true; that's difficult for any squad. That said, considering how everyone has been bashing the lack of senior leadership without Chris and the lack of a frontcourt, I guess we're not losing much of anything.
Take a breath. Everything will be fine. At the least, wait to torpedo next season until next season.

Most of us will have some guarded optimism going into the tourney as long as Chris is back as expected. My main concern, especially in light of some of the comments I saw from the players and Coach after the game yesterday, is that we have become so dependent on Chris mentally that the other players will just figure everything will be fine with Chris back, and won't change anything else about the way they have been playing since Chris went out - the sloppy/high-risk passing, the lack of focus on defense, the uncertainty on offense. CW will not be a panacea for all that is wrong; he will be a great help, but there are other things that the players need to correct.
