Chris Wright is/was the MVP of this team

Its painfully obvious now what many of us have been thinking for a while. For better or for worse, CW has been our MVP for the past 2 years. After losing Monroe we didnt even miss a step and have been able to put together a really nice season this year. But missing Wright in these past 2.5 games has been miserable. Our team cant function. Theres no one who can make plays.

Although Freeman was the preseason player of the year, he's showing that hes much more of a complementary player. Lots of bad decisions today, trying too hard, etc. Clark has really regressed this year. They should almost consider starting Markel over Clark so we can have another ballhandler / penetrator along with Freeman. Hollis and Lubick have stepped up, but this team would have been on the outside of the bubble without Wright this year. Freeman and Clark really need to step up if we dont want to end the season losing 5 straight. The refs didnt help us today, but really pitiful game all around after having a week off.

Yes, we might have gone 0-5 instead of 1-4 to start the season without him. Wright can be a very good player, as he was for a few weeks before the injury, but he has always been just as inconsistent as everyone else. Of course we need him back but it won't be a guarantee of anything.

Have to disagree with you Dhall. Chris may be inconsistent with his scoring, but it is painfully obvious that he runs the team. Since he has gone down we have looked down right pathetic on the offensive end. Without Chris on the floor everyone is lost. He made everyone around him better, and that is exactly what you want from your point guard.

100% agree. No way you can say Chris has been inconsistent, every player goes through a dryspell so isolating a few games is not a practical way of looking at it. Besides, in that previous 1-4 stretch we never looked as bad as we have in these last 3 games. We can barely crack 45 points! There is no one capable of making plays and we have seen the 2011 Hoyas are a bunch of complimentary players surrounding a very good PG. Now, the Hoyas are just a bunch of complimentary players.

Not to say this thread is wrong but Awesome Austin is a great scorer but he is a much better scorer than point guard. Chris Wright embraced his role as point guard fully this year, I believe the summer camp made him see that he didn't need to score to affect a game and he has made his teammates better this year. Clark has had 2 shooting slumps this year and he was only out of the slump 2 games and right back into his current one. That being said moving from scoring guard to point guard is a difficult transition, and while Austin has tried to do so for the good of the team, it has affected his quality of shots and the quality of shots everyone else on the team gets. Often times a good or great team is better than the sum of its parts and that is what we have seen in the wins and losses this year. That is also what we see looking at Pitt and Notre Dame. Can anyone seriously argue that the guards on Notre Dame or Pitt are better than Kemba Walker and Marshon Brooks? Of course not. What can be said is that the guards on Pitt and Notre Dame together are better than the guards together on Conneticutt and Providence. Ultimately getting quality minutes out of Markel and Vee and even Moses will make this team better if and when Chris can come back. If Chris cannot come back then we will never know how good this team could have been. The Big East Regular Season is done, the Big East Tournament is starting but more than likely we'll be done by Thursday without Chris Wright. On the other hand, I'm not sure that we may not do well in the NCAA's with even more practice, more rest and Chris Wright back with Vee, Markel and even Moses having played more than they ever would have. Ultimately CW and his friend and teammate AF have been our MVP together all season and to think otherwise sells this team short. Kudos to AF for his technical. I personally think JTIII should have gotten himself ejected to make a point after that one. If not then, certainly on the multiple holds and shifting screens Gates pulled in the second half. Everyone in the league knows neither AF not JTIII ever get upset by the little indignities...

Austin is a good complementary player, but without Wright he has tried to do too much with these fadeaway jumpers and 4ft behind NBA 3pters. He doesnt make the people around him better like Chris does. We will probably lose all 5 game without Chris in the lineup this year. I honestly hope that this team proves me wrong... but I doubt it.

I completely reject this analogy for several reasons:
1) Austin has always been a very good player, but his standard output relative to potential is VERY average. He should have been a legit BE POY candidate. Instead, even with a full deck he disappears one out of 3 or 4 games. MJ NEVER did this.

2) Austin doesn't make his teammates better; CW did and does. We would have actually had a much better chance to win these games without AF than CW. Unplug AF, and you have to replace scoring. Unplug CW, and you have to replace scoring, assists, ball-handling, leadership, etc.

There has never been any question that CW was the soul of this team. We are atrocious without him. In fact, I'd wrap that left hand up and put him out there one-handed, because we'd be better off with one-handed CW than 2-handed versions of any of his replacements.

Agreed. We'll have to win 2 games in the NCAAs and make it to the second weekend in order for Chris to have a shot to play again even one handed. That would be 4 weeks post-op which is about the earliest that anyone could come back from this injury.

I don't think it's a question of whos better, or whos Jordan and whos Pippen.

The reason Chris is more important though is because this year the offense runs through him (like it did through Monroe last year) and also because there is no depth at PG.

At Shooting Guard, there are a number of guys (Clark, Hollis, Vee) who can step up when Freeman is out. At PG we don't have that. There is a huge dropoff when Chris is out.

I think what Prof meant is exactly what I meant, Way:
Yes, we have several guys who can approximate Austin, nobody who can come close to approximating CW. Now, are Hollis and JC equal to Austin? Absolutely not. But AF brings you primarily scoring - albeit he can do it from the perimeter and off the bounce - which neither of those guys has proven they can do with any consistency.

But the reason I reject your Jordan analogy so completely is that MJ was the soul and leader of the Chicago teams he played for; that is not Austin. I love the kid, but he has made JT3 crazy at times in his career with his lack of fire. And he was always a quiet kid who didn't want to be a leader. Chris was that guy. Take him away and the fire goes out.

And I'm not trying to eat my own here, but reality in my opinion is that Austin is lacking the assertiveness, leadership and passion that represent the difference between a very good player and a superstar. Another two inches would be nice too, but I would love to see what Chris Wright could do in Austin's body or for that matter Greg Monroe's. Talent is only part of the equation, and in my estimation losing Chris cost us all the critical intangibles he brought to the floor.

Is Austin the best player on the team? Absolutely.
Is he the most valuable? Absolutely not.
Is he functioning at the highest percentage on the team relative to ability? Not close in my opinion

You're actually wrong on several assumptions Tbird. Even 4 weeks is a very aggressive timeline for this type of injury. That being said, I'm sure they are going to push the timeline up as much as they can and knowing Chris I wouldnt doubt it if he tried to play with a splint during that first NCAAs weekend. Just not sure if a one handed CW would be helping or hurting.
