I would love to see Starks start and return Hollis to the 6th man. I think this gets everyone back in the roles they had. Would also like to see more of the Sims/Vaughn combination.
We have a week to rest and get our heads on straight. I believe that JT3 will do it just like earlier in the season.

Value of the ball is going to be needed and a guy who doesn't turn it over 1 time in 24 min against their pressure is more valuable to lineup/deserves the chance to play. Bishop killed Hoyas last game--so might as well throw some size out there and hope it works as opposed to Clark.

The reason I say to start Starks is because Cincy is going to press us every chance possible. We need someone to break the press. Who can do it? Clark - do not think so. Austin - we want our best scorer to break the press and score - he will be done at halftime. I say give Starks a chance. He might turn it over a few times, but I can live with that.

Agree and if he makes mistakes-at least he can learn from it beind that he's a FR--when you are going into your SR year and play as careless with the ball as Clark-it's hurting the team. Especially with Wright out and the refusal to play Sanford more then 4-5 mpg. He either tightens up his game or he can sit/provide bench minutes.

I think Starks can become a Chris Wright type player. He just needs experience and that comes with playing time. He looks like a leader on the floor. Most freshman improve in their sophomore year. I loved how he was telling everyone to box out at the end of game. Looked like Trische was smirking like there is no way I am missing.

He hit big shots, he took good shots, he played defense well, and he understands the game. Good basketball IQ.

"We know that we have to win now," Freeman said. "So that's what we're going to take into practice this week."
Hope this week of practice goes as well as the last week of practice did (prior to SJU game)-because this group badly needs to tighten things up and make some adjustments.

Clark should, and will, start next week. Believe he will start--but why should he? What's he done to warrant that?

What's he done to warrant that? yeah i love clark to death, but he has been playing pretty poorly lately. all markel needs is some experience. i kid you not, markel, imo, is quicker than 90% of college guards with the ball in his hands. that spin move is the quickest ive ever seen actually.

Against Cinci the last time, there was little to no ball movement against their zone, and often times we had 5 guys standing out on the perimeter. I thought our guys got back to making an effort to get the ball into the FT line area and then kick out for open shots against Cuse. We just happened to miss a lot of open looks. Those open looks have to go down if we're going to win next week. Guys like Hollis and Free have to step up and finally make teams pay on a consistent basis from the outside if they're open. Otherwise, that zone will continue to sag more and more and we are going to get nothing in terms of post production or offensive rebounds.
Markel did a great job of taking care of the ball and making the right decisions yesterday. He will have a much tougher assignment next week with Cinci's full-court pressure. If he can handle it, we will be in good shape. The same goes for Clark, who has been abysmal in taking care of the ball as of late. It certainly can't be worse than the last time we played them, where there were turnovers everywhere in the backcourt.
Defensively, I think we need to speed the game up more with pressure. Cinci made a concerted effort to burn shot clock almost every time down the floor in our last game, and I'm pretty sure they'll try to do the same to us again. This is where we should really use Vee to pressure in the backcourt against their guards and also keep our starting guards fresh. As for defending Gates, Vaughn and Sims really have to step up and hold their ground against him. He's prone to foul trouble, but we kept biting on head fakes and let him muscle his way to a bunch of offensive rebounds. Have to put a body on him at all times.
If it were up to me, I'd also start Starks and move Hollis back to the bench. We can't go into scoring lulls when our bench comes in, and although he had a miserable shooting game yesterday, Hollis is still our best option offensively by far if he's coming off the bench. Also wouldn't mind Clark coming off the bench either, but I don't think there's a chance JTIII would do it.
Last time they were the desperate team in need of a win. This time it's us. Lose this game and we'll be playing Tuesday at the Garden. That enough should be motivation for us. The goal should be to lock down a 6 or 7 seed at the Garden and get that Wed. night game. If we do that, I have an inkling that the bracket will break down very favorably for us.

I think the positive from the Syracuse game is we played Sims with Vaughn for the first time this year and Sims scored 6 points and Vaughn got double teamed every time he got the ball under the hoop. Playing someone like Gates with both Sims and Vaughn in the game at Cinci should significantly change the inside game. The difficulty with the press also would be solved by having Sims and Vaughn in the game together as Sims at half court has the height and speed to get balls thrown to him and both Hollis and Vaughn near the basket can score layups. Pressing the presser and punishing the press are good ways to win basketball games and we should be able to do both at Cincinatti. Finally, no one on this board seems to get why our team's 8-0 run started after a week off. Despite JTIII making the assertion that they're young kids and shouldn't get tired, our team has played one of the toughest schedules in the country and also a tough schedule in the big east. Looking at Pomeroy, RPI and Sagarin, no one has played as many top 50 teams as we have. A week off to practice defense, practice 3 point shots with only teammates blocking you, not having opponents who don't mind if they land on your ankle or knee when they come down does make a difference. When we play Cinci, we will have 7 days of rest and they will be playing their third game in 6 days. Finally if we do lose in the Big East tournament early, the additional rest may be very motivating for the NCAA tournament as well. I don't think this team is done, and I am sure many of the teams ranked above us both in the BE tournament and eventually in the NCAA will not want to play us. Having Markel step up and hit 3's against Syracuse was very positive, teams when he subs in will have to guard him out to 3 now. While a loss is not a win, Syracuse has made me look forward to our rematch at Cinci!

I like that Sims/Vaughn lineup, also. We just have to pray they don't get in foul trouble, since Sims is Vaughn's primary backup. I think that's why we won't see it too much. I am happy III finally tried it, though.

make shots
take care of the ball
use their pressure against them...that's what our offense is supposed to tear up...i was very surprised we weren't able to get any backdoor cuts against the overplaying of cinci
we need to play a big lineup...lotta henry...honestly julian is not quick enough for this game...

I think JTII will want that experience, and will either want Hollis as a spark off the bench, or to hold off on Markel in light of the Cincy pressure. I don't disagree that Jason needs to show us more with Chris out - although 4-9 with 11 points and 7 boards is not a horrible game.

Play Markel, and leave him in. We need to forget the idea of Chris returning, assume he won't. Even if he does return this year, he won't be the #4 we are used to.The future is now. I really liked Markel's harassing his teamates before late SU freethrows. He was vocal and demonstrative. Looked odd ( for this group), but refreshing. Beyond that, I think he can be as good as Chris in time. And right now he is probably a better bet against UC pressure than JC.
