Big part of how this game plays out will be dependent on something that's been a weakness of ours so far: closing out on perimeter shooters. We're going to need to stay disciplined, communicate during switches, and not go for the shot fakes that ND will be using to draw BS fouls.

There is zero chance I come out of this game not despising Ben Hansbrough.

I'd like to see us press ND. They love to do what we did with JT3's first squad here - control the ball, pass/rotate, and wear you down. We let them lock in last year and they basically had whatever they wanted against our D.
Just my opinion, but I think we might be able to force them into things they have not needed to do if we just throw in a token press so they have less time to set the halfcourt offense. Note what we got out of the press today - not necessarily any turnovers but just a different look and Memphis did not react well at all.

Every time I think I can't hate Mike Brey any more, he does something that makes it so.

I agree with the press. This ND team has limited depth, especially in the back court. (with a freshman PG)

I agree with the press. This ND team has limited depth, especially in the back court. (with a freshman PG) Even so, this will definitely be the best offense we've faced. Our defense will be sorely tested in this one. Can we commit to the defensive end for 40 minutes?

I anticipate a big game from Austin, since he will remember last year's game where his diabetes was discovered. Also we have the depth to control Hanbrough this year.

ND is one of the most experienced teams we'll play. In fact, I'd wager this game will have more senior starters (8 by my count) then any other Big East game this year.
We're more talented, but it's always tough to play ND. You know they're going to shoot a lot of threes and hit a good number.

ND will be a battle .... no blow outs here. They score slightly more than us, they assist slightly better than us, and they blow us away on the boards. We need our A game to win.

Agree...considering this is an away game, a quality opponent that is experienced, their strengths could be one of the toughest of the year. Does Austin guard 6'8" Abromaitis (their 3)?
Last yr we shot 51% and still lost the game. Need to play better D. Also got killed on the boards last time. Let's start the BE season off right!

Our defense will be sorely tested in this one. Can we commit to the defensive end for 40 minutes? Luckily for us we're so bad at defense sometimes we make even mediocre offenses play as efficiently as possible, so we should used to not being able to get stops. We've shown improvement in attention to the defensive end the last three games and our rotations are improved as is our communication. Just keep that up and do the best you can do and thats all you can ask for. The defense isn't there yet, but just show me some signs of hope and I'll be happy.

Let's see...they don't cause turnovers. They're decent at offensive rebounding, but no better than North Carolina St. or Old Dominion (and by that I mean they're worse). They're less athletic than us.
Hmmm...so why are we acting like they're like some kind of force? This is the same middle of the pack Notre Dame team. They're good enough to beat any BE team that doesn't show up, but they're not actually one of the best teams in the Big East. Yes, they did beat us last year. But we were playing 4 on 5 and without our best player.
Austin is playing in this game. And Mike Brey still won't be wearing a tie. The only way we lose is if we play poorly. The last time I was afraid of a Notre Dame team being better than us, Roy slammed home the victory.

Notre Dame is certainly a solid team. They have beat every opponent they were suppose to beat non- conference. They also are Heavy on SR leaders much as we are, this will be a good test for us. I really respect there coach and there guys can shoot the three. I agree with the above posts that winning the three point battle will determine the outcome of this game. Defending the three will be of paramount importance. This is a tough stretch for Notre Dame, they play Hoyas, Cuse, and Uconn in a matter of like 5 days. We will learn alot about Norte Dame as well..

How long will it take them to bring up that 2001 four overtime debacle?

It will be a recurrent theme for much of Big East play this year - we are the better team, but if we don't come ready with everything we have, we can lose on the road. But this band of Hoyas has a look and a feel that makes me much less nervous about this type of game than in the recent past.

It will definitely be a tough game. I think our willingness to dribble penetrate is the difference. If we play solid defense we should be able to get a 5-6 pt. win.
