granted, there weren't too many to chase down tonight..but this so far has been the most pleasant surprise and the TEAM effort we are seeing on the glass is great.
enough so, that the improvement deserves its own thread ;D

Team effort everywhere--but especially the glass and just need to keep fighting. Really like the toughness/grit shown tonight. It was ugly in some areas--but you fight through it by having everyone step up and play as one--fight it out TOGETHER! Games like this are important to build a team--but even moreso when you find a way to win them--when as a group--in past they haven't. Every team takes on a different persona--but this game should help them a great deal--now onto the DEFENSE!! ;D

We now have a bunch of big men who will fight for every board, and with the development of Henry and the promise of Nate, our rebounding should just get better - not to mention Moses when he gets to play. And with the recruits we have already for the next 2 years, rebounding should be a strength for the future.

More needs to be said on this -- we just played a top ten team on the road and gathered 12 offensive rebounds to their 17 defensive rebounds. We grabbed 24 defensive rebounds to their 8 offensive.
That's 41% of offensive rebounds (50% in 2nd half/OT!) and 75% of defensive rebounds. Mizzou is not a huge team, but they are athletic and Ratliffe had rebounded really well to date.
The big Kudos go to the bigs -- only 14 rebounds in a combined 62 minutes for Nate, Henry and Julian, but we also had four team rebounds -- 3 offensive -- which were mostly them. They kept a lot of balls alive.

we need to turnover the ball less. that would be good.

Prediction - the game last night will be the most frenetic, fast-paced, hard pressing game we play all season. And we won. Fugghedabouddit.

As much as I hate to praise Gottlieb, one of his more salient points was that for long stretches of the second half, the only thing that kept us afloat was the offensive glass. This team is collectively demonstrating a nice nose for the ball.

I liked that some of the times he couldn't reach the ball, instead of going over the back and fouling, he'd try to just direct the ball somewhere a teammate might be able to grab it. Those things are invisible in the boxscore, but invaluable to the coaches reviewing the game tape. Once he gets his confidence back on offense, I believe the Hoyas will have themselves quite the legit Bit East power forward. Just needs to keep working and it will come, in my opinion.

we need to turnover the ball less. that would be good. Even if it doesn't feel like it, last night's game was actually our second lowest turnover rate (we turned it over on 20.4% of possessions) of the season! It was mainly that most of the TO's came in bunches (about 5-10 minutes at the end of the first half, and 5-10 minutes in the middle of the second half). On the other hand, yes, we need to cut down on TO's in general, because we should be turning it over on far fewer possessions than that.

About three minutes into the second half, we had 13 turnovers (according to espn). If that was correct, it means that in the last 22 minutes of play, we had four turnovers. I'll take that against anybody, and it's fantastic against a team like Missouri.
As for the rebounding, I had major concerns about that going into the season, and so far it's been a strength, not a liability. Very encouraging, and the contributions from Henry and Hollis (not so much last night, but in the previous two games) have been huge.

The Hoyas' most efficient year on offense came in 2007. The big difference b/w that year and the others? It wasn't the turnover rate (which was 22%), it was the offensive rebounding rate.
Our offense is going to capitalize on a really high percentage of possessions. The key is maximizing possessions, and that can be accomplished through better offensive rebounding or minimizing turnovers. I would guess that additional possessions created by offensive rebounds probably turn into more points than additional possessions created by not turning the ball over, since they lead to more layups or kick outs to open shooters, though I don't have any data to show that.

Our rebounding has been amazing this year. Great job all around.

I think that is generally true (I believe Pomeroy looked at that a couple of years ago while discussing DeJuan Blair). At least last season for the Hoyas, this wasn't true. They were just under 1.0 ppp on those possessions that were extended by an offensive rebound. I don't have the stats in front of me for the exact numbers, but I do recall being surprised by the result. Yet another blog post that was never written up.
