Don't know if the link will work without a subscription, but saw this in the Journal this morning. No actual discussion of graduation rates, just a cheap shot at GU: online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704648604575620692760066602.html?mod=ITP_opinion_0Quote: The good brothers at Georgetown mostly looked the other way for three decades while John Thompson built a basketball dynasty with kids who didn't belong at a serious university. Mr. Thompson and Temple coach John Chaney also complained loudly whenever the NCAA tried to tighten academic standards.

If you don't have the sharpest intellect in the world but you have world class athletic talent, why isn't that as "belonging" as someone with the inverse?

Nothing like good old axe grinding using perceptions rather than facts. "The brothers" looked the other way? We have "brothers" at Georgetown? I thought they were priests. Silly me. If Mr. Yost actually looked at what the majority of those "kids who didn't belong at a serious university" have done since graduation he'd undoubtedly be shocked at how successful they've been.

Yes, he lost me at "brothers"... obviously, researching is not his strong suit.

The phrase you should be troubled by is not "good brothers." That seems an innocent mistake and nothing more.
The disturbing phrase in that sentence is "didn't belong."

Oh, I don't believe for a second there are any 'innocent mistakes' in that paragraph. It's misinformation and prejudice promulgated by an overly entitled elitist writer, simple as that.

Temple is not a Catholic school! Why bring up the Owls and Coach Chaney, unless you are making a blanket statement that black coaches don't care about academic standards?
What about the incredible defense and discipline that both "preached?"

I'm pretty sure you answered your own question there whipple.
One would think the better question, as Dan said, is what these kids did aftewards. Ex post information would appear to be a better indicator of "belonging" than ex ante estimators. But on the other hand, I guess it's easier to just insinuate that a black kid who plays ball doesn't "belong."

If he gets called out for it, I guarantee he'll respond, "well of course things are different now and Georgetown is committed to having real student athletes, look at that Nate Lubick kid!"

Praising some nun at Xavier who is doing the job that Mary Fenlon started 4 decades ago. Could someone please ensure the UNIVERSITY replies to this nonsense? It really should not be allowed to sit out there unchallenged. GU -- during the JT years Yost mentions -- had what, a 96% Hoops graduation rate? or something like that? This kind of nonsense has to be addressed immediately and officially with facts behind it, or it will fester and take on a life of its own like the $200 million/day Obama to India nonsense that was accepted so easily by those with an axe to grind.

Don't know if the link will work without a subscription All (nearly all) WSJ articles are available without a subscription, even those that prompt you to enter your user name and password. Just google the article title and you can (almost) always access the article from the google results page without a hassle.

I subscribed just so I could cancel. I yelled, "I was not aware WSJ stood for White Supremicist Journal."

Says it was posted by Erik Frias. Erik... if you are a member of this board.. GREAT JOB! Thanks from ALL of us for responding so well. I'd still like to see the UNIVERSITY make an official response.
