Or, perhaps it would be wise to let the facts come out about what happened to an extremely troubled young before assuming the worst. It gets in the way of all the fun ND bashing, but in a situation this serious, I'd hope one would be able to bite their tongue, and have their fun in other ways.
Should any evidence of a cover up surface, ND should be held to the fire.

If ND had their way, no facts would ever come out about this case and the football team could carry on. In any event, I'm satisfied with just bashing the school and team for killing that kid in the video tower and, to date, doing nothing about it other than sending out an "We're sorry" email. It's pathetic and I hope that, eventually, the school pays dearly for their win at all cost attitude.

It's pathetic and I hope that, eventually, the school pays dearly for their win at all cost attitude. Caveat. I hate Notre Dame. Notre Dame holds itself to a higher standard than other schools, like it or not. The vast majority of their football players graduate, which seems to mean that they don't have a win at all cost attitude. They're not as pure as the driven snow, however, no matter how much they or their alumni think they are. In the case of the videographer, I doubt that Kelly honestly thought much about the potential risk - revelations that came out later indicated that no one really had any procedure to deal with dangerous weather. ND came out quickly and clearly said that it was their fault. In the case of the student, there's so much we don't know. People can make false allegations. ND has an obligation to let the investigation conclude before they make any decisions. If anything, this is more an indictment of university justice systems, which seem to operate independently of the actual justice system at most colleges (this is a particularly nasty problem when it involves rape cases, when there are a fair number of stories about accusers who don't feel justice was done. So, short - Notre Dame is bad, but I don't think Georgetown would have handled these differently.

You don't think Georgetown athletes could kill another student and then a massive administration effort would play down the crime for several months, ultimately resulting in no sanctions against the perpetrators other than a 10-page paper on why it's wrong to kill your classmates? /be kind

"Don't do anything you would regret. Messing with notre dame football is a bad idea."
That quote says it all. What a shame. Notre Dame should be ashamed of themselves.

"Don't do anything you would regret. Messing with notre dame football is a bad idea." That quote says it all. What a shame. Notre Dame should be ashamed of themselves. You confuse me. A text sent from a friend of the accused to the alleged victim, for which he was immediately told to to "shut it down" by the university should make Notre Dame ashamed? Either you haven't followed the story closely, or you are being deliberately obtuse. What exactly should Notre Dame have done? Jumped on this student athlete before facts came out like Duke did with Lacrosse players? This is especially true in light of the comments by St. Joseph County Prosecutor. media.trb.com/media/acrobat/2010-12/272335660-16095122.pdfI actually really like ND's letter in response to the Tribune's story. www.southbendtribune.com/article/20101216/News01/101219671/1130

If ND had lost to Utah and USC, this football player would be in jail right now and Brian Kelley would be fired for the video guy's death. But, wins trump all else in South Bend.

I mean, its not like I'm a Cuse fan). Anyway, maybe I have just read the wrong stories (and I have not followed the story as closely as you have). No one rushed to judgement (unlike Duke) but it doesn't seem to me, from the few stories I have read, that things were properly handled either. Either way, it is what it is. And I read that threat as the football player believed, because he was a part of "ND football," that he was better than anything else, including the law. If a Georgetown basketball player told someone in the same context "not to mess with Georgetown basketball" JTIII would kick him off the team in a heartbeat

Guess it was unclear in the article I read. Regardless, the statement, whomever made it, shows that people think notre dame football is above all else. I personally do not think that is right.

Lots of people think that really stupid things are above all else - regrettably, this is not confined to Golden Domers.

Agreed, Former. Those attacking ND seem to really make this about the Evils of Big-Time Football or College Sports in General. But there's no proof - really not even an inkling - that any of this involves some larger conspiracy beyond one text message.
More than fifteen years ago, when I started in college, there were discussions of he-said/she-said cases. There's never been a way to adjudicate them fairly and figure out where the truth lies.

Notre Dame at fault in Sullivan's death
ExcerptINDIANAPOLIS -- A four-month investigation into a student's death has found the University of Notre Dame did not maintain safe working conditions and failed to heed wind warnings when the hydraulic lift he was standing on to film football practice toppled over in 51 mph gusts.
Indiana Department of Labor commissioner Lori Torres said Tuesday ....Notre Dame knowingly exposed Sullivan and two other videographers to unsafe conditions. [/blockquote] I can't imagine that conclusion is going to help ND defend itself from any lawsuits... if the parents choose to go that route.

Also, is there anyone who thought that this wouldn't ultimately be the conclusion? Ok, it's not the "conclusion," but I think you know what I mean.

Looking at that first affadavit signed by the head coach, I've just got to wonder how often Brian Kelly misspells his own name. I'd expect that at a school like Cincy, but doesn't Notre Dame have higher academic standards for its football program?
