I disgusted there aren't more jokes. This is funny stuff. They should check the Harbin roof for poppy plants and pot. I also hear there is an a cock fighting ring somewhere in Village C

Village C is where the human trafficking goes on, the cock fighting is in Village B.
My favorite joke about the incident is someone's tweet that trying to restrict on-campus drug manufacturing will just push drug manufacturing off campus into neighborhoods like Burleith.

If the process involved extraction through use of solvents, it could be a fire hazard depending upon the volatility of the solvents? Maybe Nevada Hoya may can enlighten us? It seems that some of the solvents used are ether (big fire hazard), chloroform, or methylene chloride (we used to use a bunch of this solvent for extractions, but the indication that it might be a carcinogen has caused this solvent being used less and less).

This incident has been front page news across the country. My wife said it was the lead story on the 11 pm news last night. This has given GU a big black eye (people at church were wondering what the heck is going on at Georgetown). Bad weekend all around for Georgetown.

I just assumed they would have been using something easier to buy like lighter fluid.

So it gives Georgetown a black eye, who cares? The Charles Smith thing is probably also funny to some.

I don't really get the humor that's coming out of this, and I generally see at least some humor in everything. It's also really strange to see how many people saw the story and their first thought was: "I need to post this on facebook/Twitter." I can't figure out why. To make it more likely that everyone will find out about this?

To make it more likely that everyone will find out about this? 1) Strummer, it's a drug lab at a top-25 school. Major amounts of fire, police, and EMTs were there. Any newspaper/television/radio writing room has police frequency scanners for this purpose- to find news. You really think this story wasn't going national? Whether people posted on Facebook/Twitter or they didn't, other people were going to know about it. 2) This story is so beyond the pale that it begged to be posted/shared/disseminated with an appropriate amount of snark and pithiness, which is indicative of a bunch of sarcastic twenty-somethings. What did you expect: for us to sit in closed circles and wail about how our school has gone to hell? Let's look at the facts: no one was hurt and three morons will be going to jail for a very long time for doing something completely asinine. If you can't lampoon those facts, then which ones can you lampoon?

I don't think this reflects that poorly on Georgetown. It seems pretty clear now that this had just started up and hadn't be operating all semester the way I thought originally. It seems georgetown responded quickly and properly. I don't think people are looking down on Georgetown because of the actions of 2 freshman. I don't see this as much of a black eye. This will be forgotten in about a week. I don't think anyone who doesn't already hate us ( cuse fans) will remember this.

It definitely reflects poorly on the school. Sure, we might focus on the fact that it was shut down quickly. But almost everyone else will just see/read/remember "Meth lab at Georgetown!"
(I lived on Harbin 9 in 2004-05. Room 926 was two friendly harmless girls that year.)

It obviously reflects poorly on the school, but i think it'll be old news in a week. It's not that big of a deal. It's a terrible thing that it happened, but the actions of 2 students isn't going to permanently tarnish the reputation of the school. That's all I'm saying. The average person won't remember this a month from now. Cuse fans sure, but anyone else will have forgotten it.

This Mount Pious attitude I really don't understand - why wouldn't you share this story with your Georgetown friends? And do you really think that not sharing it with friends is going to mean people won't find out about a story that's been headline news the last two days?
As everyone has said, this will blow over, maybe it'll be a Basketball cheer for other Big East schools this year, but it'll be forgotten about by next year. And one of the kids went to Phillips Andover so the chances of them doing any jail time is near-zero. I'd even guess they won't be expelled.

If it had actually been meth, or a chem professor instead of two 18 year olds, then I would be more upset/worried.

This incident has been front page news across the country. My wife said it was the lead story on the 11 pm news last night. This has given GU a big black eye (people at church were wondering what the heck is going on at Georgetown). Bad weekend all around for Georgetown. Question: What the heck is going on at Georgetown? Answer: The same thing that's going on at every college whose name doesn't rhyme with Mringham Myoung Muniversity. The lack of sophistication strongly suggests this was a couple of kids seeing if they could "really make it work" like they read on the internet. It doesn't appear this got too far beyond the experimental stage. There are dozens of more advanced "drug operations" going on around the Hilltop at this very moment. They're just all well-organized enough to not try to produce a chemical-intensive substance in a dorm room. The high level of media coverage is mostly a function of the initial, incorrect reports that this was a "meth lab." When you take the real danger (explosive, poisonous, etc.) involved with those, the accompanying evacuation of an entire dorm, and the incongruity of a drug activity so strongly associated with rural poverty being discovered on an elite campus, there's enough there to make a not insignificant "story." Now that the details are coming out and they appear far less shocking that first reported, the media has to stay with the story for at least a little while in order to justify their initial breathless coverage. My guess is that the media attention will be broad but shallow. From the standpoint of wanting what's best for the university's reputation, we should all hope that this is the case and that reporters don't start asking about things like the fact that the cops tried to pull the fire alarms to evacuate the building and they all failed to engage. Or that a student-athlete living on that floor was arrested for domestic violence. 1 Or that one of the other denizens has appeared in some pretty graphic pornographic videos. The Hoya's article skirted some of these latter things in a throwaway line - Harbin’s ninth floor has been the center of several disciplinary issues this year, according to Harbin residents. “This is ridiculous, even for us,” said Eric Synowicki (COL ’14), who lives on Harbin 9. - but so far I haven't seen anyone dig further. 1 No need to go into details, obviously, but the incident is a matter of public record: blog.georgetownvoice.com/2010/10/14/campus-crime-watch-two-domestic-assaults-in-ten-days/#more-21782Monday, October 11 2:05 AM – ASSAULT (Harbin). A student assaulted his girlfriend, who sustained injuries. The student was arrested and charged with domestic violence assault and taken to MPD 2nd District.

I don't think covering over that fact helps ensure that changes are made to safety on-campus. Olson didn't mention the fire alarm thing in either his email to students or to parents, and the fire alarm is the element in this story that the University actually had control over.

The mods are probably going to wipe any specifics from the face of the board (justifiably), so I don't think that's really answerable. There was a Facebook page that was linked in one of the comments of Vox Populi before the identities were revealed, and the name of that person matches one of the names released - and it said Georgetown '14 and I'm pretty sure it said Phillips Andover. That page has since been deleted, and I'm just going off of memory, so I could be completely wrong here.
