Just felt the need to say that after watching every single televised Hoya game over the last 25 plus years, Jessie Sapp goes down as one of my top 5 favorite Hoyas ever. The kid was tough as nails, played with moxy, and wasn't afraid to take (and hit) the big shot. He's directly responsible for beating the Cuse one year, and played a huge role in our comeback win against UNC sending us to the FF. More importantly, great guy off the court....great to have him in the Hoya family.
We miss you Jessie!!

My favorite Jessie moment was going nose to nose with Jared Dudley who was trying to intimidate his smaller opponent. Jessie would have none of it.
Later in the game, Pat JR dunked on Dudley big time.
Dudley was the guy who had said the ACC was a better conference with teams with great tradition, and that either the ACC was more athletic, or GU wasn't. OK, I can't remember all the details.
Our guys said nothing, but stuck it to them on the court. Dudley was frustrated and attempted to take it out on Sapp. I guess he forgot Sapp grew up playing ball in Harlem and had heard and seen it all before.
Actually, I should add Jessie always played well at MSG too.
However, "top 5" favorite Hoya of last 25 years? mmmmm, our lists diverge at that point.

He's Onions!
As fans, we all have a tendency to attribute wins and losses to a single cause or player rather than a bunch of smaller sources.
We also have a tendency to attribute performance changes to personality traits when there's not a lot of backing for that.
Jessie didn't have a great senior year compared to his stellar junior year, stats-wise, but he had a great Hoya career, and he was a huge part of our two most successful post-season teams of the JTIII era.
He is one of my favorites of the JTIII era simply because of his toughness, and ability to take -- and hit -- the winning shot.

SirSaxa highlighted one of the best March Madness moments under JTIII, and Jessie Sapp led the way. I believe it was the first time we were playing BC after our final BE game against them in Boston.
Sapp had a ton of magnificent games and individual plays. One of the best had to have been his near-full-court shot at the halftime buzzard against Villanova in Philadelphia ... we won that game by 3.

OK, double posting... or double quoting... but bmartin's post on Jessie's outstanding performance belongs right here as well as in the Hoyas in Europe thread.

My favorite Jessie plays were the little hesitation drive he had against UNC and the go ahead 3 he hit at WVU his junior year. You just knew he was going to make that one.

Didn't he have a similar 1st half buzzer-beater at Duke in that otherwise forgettable game?

Jessie and Jon will be forever linked as a more fire and ice combo than any NC State clowns could ever be.
I want both those guys on the debate team, baseball team, or the hungry, hungry hippos team. We miss them every day.

Did the anti-Jessie thread get nuked in its entirety, or did our mods lance out the boils with laser precision? I'm having trouble finding that bit of nastiness...

Oh man, that's one of my favorite away game moments of all time. I was skiing in the Poconos and took a long lunch break to watch this one (surrounded by Nova fans). When Jessie hit that shot i just KNEW we would win. And win we did . . . by three, 58-55. ONIONS!!!

I remember that hesitation move. It think it was against Hansborough... totally faked him out and Jessie went right in for an easy, open layup! Great moment. Some on the board said his move looked like a classic Earl Monroe move. Indeed, it did.

That hesitation move was amazing....shortly thereafter he hit another runner in the lane. Pretty sure that's when he was first nicknamed ONIONS.
Wish I had footage of the crossover dribble pull up three pointer he hit against cuse, or the dagger he hit against West Virginia in the game that ended with Patrick swatting Butler at the buzzer in Morgantown.
Jessie could battle!!

If Jesse really does check these boards, I am sure he realizes by now that the vast, VAST majority of Hoya fans thought he had a wonderful career with some unforgettable moments, and are proud he was a Hoya. There will always be some detractors - heck, there were those back in the early 80's who grumbled that Patrick didn't score more! HOYA SAXA Jesse, and we will keep following your career wherever it takes you.
