Hope for the best! He's one of the best Hoyas I ever saw. Recruited as a defensive specialist, he turned into one of the best offensive players in GU history. His progress was outstanding.
From hoyasaxa.com:
"Year G FG FT REB AST STL BLK PTS AVG. 1985-86 30 28-59 34-43 30 25 18 2 90 3.0 1986-87 33 81-193 40-62 49 32 36 4 221 6.7 1987-88 30 173-405 77-100 100 75 71 0 470 15.7 1988-89 33 222-446 137-175 118 169 58 4 617 18.7 Totals 126 504-1103 288-380 297 301 183 10 1398 11.1
Notable: 2nd team All-America, 1989. All Big-East, 1988, 1989. Team captain, 1989. Daly MVP Award winner, 1988, 1989. Though never expected to be a starter when recruited, he ranks among the Hoyas' top 15 in scoring, assists, and steals."

Prayers for Smitty - told he would never play, he became a starter in the NBA. Best to him in a time of need.

One of my all-time favorite Hoyas, a guy who was told he'd never become a starter and worked his tail off.

Keep your head up, Smitty! His lil brother was pretty good, too!

Prayers are with you and your family. Truly one of the best.
I nearly lost control of my car when I heard the news yesterday on the radio. Wow.

I'll never forget his end-to-end last second layup to beat Syracuse at the dome in '88. It had to be one of the great regular season Hoya moments of all time.
Get well Smitty...

I just heard this news from a buddy back home in DC...I am shocked and horrified. Charles Smith was, is, and will always be my favorite Hoya ever. I remember being a kid and meeting him at the Cap Center during a Hoya game when he was playing for Celtics. He was very polite and signed an autograph for me. I have followed the ups and down in his life since then and have always hoped for the best. I am not usually an emotional person, but this news really has me at a loss for words.
My thoughts and prayers are with him.

I was there for that one, never seen a screaming mob silenced so quickly. Also remember the 40-foot banker at the buzzer to beat LSU in the NCAA's. Praying hard Smitty, hang in there. Hoya Saxa.

Man...the latest news is not good. His health is still the paramount concern, but it seems that something seriously bad was going on.

Smitty is, and always will be, a Hoya. Let's all pray for him now and not get too distracted by the deatails. They can wait. The big thing is for Smitty to get well.
I, too, was there in the Dome in '88 when he went coast to coast. One of my all time fondest Hoya moments.
