So just for discussion sake, if at the end of the year those rankings prove to be accurate, then would translate to a 6 seed in the big dance and a 2nd round matchup against a 3 seed with a Sweet 16 birth on the line, if the seedings were to hold. Hypothetically, if that were to happen then would you guage the success of the season on advancing to the round of 16? Theoretically, that would be "overachieving." So does that mean that anything short of winning one in the tourney is a disappointment?
I know a lot of things factor into this, but I'm just trying to get a realistic perspective.
Edited. Keep the language clean.--Admin

Well, considering that preseason rankings rarely translate to end of the season rankings, let's just consider everything hifi said as a moot point (as is usually the case for hifi posts). I'm sure everybody has their own idea of what they'd be proud of. A few people would probably be content with simply a berth while others want at least one win, and others aren't happy unless we win the whole damn thing.
Considering our roster and the fact that we look like we have some very promising talent coming into their freshman year, I would be pretty happy with our season if we made it to the Sweet 16 this year, and probably a little disappointed if we got knocked out in the second round.
Curious to know what others feel, though.

I am really surprised that we are that low, honestly. Obviously, it means little or nothing, but I dont get it.

If they had achieved anything of importance-they'd get ranked higher. Beating teams who were playing for National Title might be a sign of how good they could've been--but it's also a point to outsiders that wonder if they aren't getting most out of what they have? Last time I checked--you get to go EARN your way into higher rankings, attention, success, by winning games and showing you are a good team/full of good players.

What have half of the teams in the poll proved? What has UNC, Missouri, Gonzaga, Memphis, Texas, Illinois, Washington, VT or this year's kentucky with entirely new starting 5 proved. Certainly not more than the hoyas did last year.

Yeah, please, come on, I understand your philosophy, RDF. It's points you've made several times, but Gtown clearly fits the bill of a team that would be ranked higher, IMO, and that's all I am saying. We lost 1 starter, we recruited well, we have 2 senior guards, we have cache, we beat good teams every year, etc. Plus, if coaches truly believe we are a #6 seed in the NCAAs, that is pretty absurd, IMO.

Prove it on the court. The rest will take care of itself.

We're in the Big East, we have a tough schedule, and poll voters are familiar with our team, if we win, we'll move up. Pre-season rankings are nothing more than a popularity contest from the season before, and we ended the season poorly.
Last season is over, now its time to focus on this season. I'm excited and think we have the potential to be pretty good but just like pre-season polls my opinion doesn't mean jack. We have to earn it on the hardwood.

Absurd, but it also means we have upside. Everyone loves upside, right? I mean, if at the end of the regular season we're still #21, I'll be disappointed, but nowhere near as disappointed as I would be if we started the season as a consensus top 10 pick and fell to #21. We're on the right side of the expectations game I think.

I'm not talking about other programs because I could give a rat's ass about them--but same stuff applies--and will be proven on court. Last time I checked--if Hoyas do well--they don't need to hope someone loses so they move up the BCS computer ranking--so why do people get upset about this bull....?? Rankings matter at year's end-not beginning.

I chalk it up to people not understanding how great a college player Austin Freeman is. He was having an historic year up until the diagnosis.

I chalk it up to people not understanding how great a college player Austin Freeman is. He was having an historic year up until the diagnosis. The problem is, we really don't know what a post-diagnosis Austin Freeman is. Good news is that apparently the people voting for the Big East Player of the Year award think he's going to be the same guy that was a top 5 player in the conference last season. But I don't know if that's guaranteed at this point. I think #21 is a very fair ranking. The backcourt is one of the top 10 in the country, but the frontcourt is a complete crapshoot. Until we see somebody over 6'3" besides Vaughn show that he can be a consistent contributor, it's hard to imagine the Hoyas being better than this ranking.

i mean we don't totally know but he's basically played full length games in kenner and in the paul pierce camp. So i think we've seen plenty to know that post diagnosis austin will be fine.
