With our perceived strength being on the perimeter with shooters like Freeman, Clark and Wright/Thompson, is it likely that we will see more man-to-man defense this year? Seems like opposing coaches will try to take away our guards' games, whereas last year we saw zones packing in to defend Monroe.
I don't know, but I seem to remember us performing at our highest level within the offense against man-to-man defense, right? Could be a good thing that we are supposedly much stronger on the perimeter.

First time JT3's Hoyas beat one of the top teams in the country, undefeated, #1 Duke. Coach K insisted on playing a tight, agressive D against us and the Hoyas ate them up! Just awesome. Thanks for reminding me!

As good as our perimeter is offensively, it is pretty terrible defensively. We lack lateral quickness, defensive technique and the patience needed to be a strong perimeter defensive team. To me the season depends on the defensive improvement, specifically from the guards. Hopefully we can actually work on our zone defense to hide these flaws and be able to switch up defenses. I am tired of teams scoring probably 90% of the time when we switch to zone.

I know we were not a good Defensive team. Certainly not as good as we needed to be, but we weren't that bad and I think it will only take a small improvement for us to be as good defensively as we need to be. We were 47th in adjusted defensive efficiency last year. That mean's there were literally hundreds of teams that were worse than us at defense. And the difference between #1 and #47 was only 8.1pts and the difference between 47th and 25th was just 2.4pts. We were 5th in the BE by this metric. No doubt we need to improve our defense, but we were hardly a terrible defensive team imo.

Plus the zone and the way we perform switches is really tough to learn and execute correctly (especially when other teams figure it out or have the personnel to beat it). I'd love to see us man up on D more and see more man on O. So even though the thread's subject question is ambiguous, I hope the answer's yes.

yes i know the thread is about how we will be defended. Unless the defense improves dramatically this team is headed to a 9-9 10-8 season. we do realize that 47 rating was the worse since somewhere in the 60s during IIIs first seaon. I just don't think we have the personel that can play strong man and our lack of size with a three guard line-up limits the effectiveness of multiple zones that we have had great success with prior to last year.

The whole league lacks big men this year. I don't think our lack of experienced size will be as big a negative as you suspect, Sleepy.
I think Vaughn will surprise this year. And I think one of Sims/Lubick/Moses may turn out to be quite a serviceable PF against relatively weak big man competition within the League.

Straying slightly off topic, but am I right in thinking Jason is our best guard on defense?

Ranch i agree with lack of good size in the league this year. My concern is that when we have been good to almost great on defense we played alot of matchup zone mixed with some man. The lack of size i was referring to was with freeman clarke and wright and it forced us to play more man than i have seen in six years. Unfortunately i fear we will see this continue this year.
