Jabril said himself he's 6'5. I don't know where 6'6 came from. But I don't know how he's a tweener, either. 2 guard all the way. In regards to Carmelo, I don't see the need. Not in this class. We have enough guards, and it appears there's reason for optimism around James Robinson for the 2012 class. There's nothing wrong with stopping by to see the kid, at least keep in touch if something unfolds in the spring where he could potentially be an option. But as of now? no need. I hope you're right, allen, but Austin Freeman is also a 2 guard all the way, and we haven't seen him at that position too often of late, have we?

I'm sure Carmelo will play a lot of PG too--since Tyrone Johnson left his HS to play at Montrose and get more "attention" to make All Star games so he'll give up rock to the diminutive little sprite who is a combo of Wallace, and insert other praise we've heard due to his success in a crappy 2nd rate All Star game that took place in front of a Crappy All Star game with better talent--Jordan Brand game--Regional/International Games are awful--and make the National game look great--and that game is awful. Trawick as a 6'4 player--who some were lying saying he was 6'6 when being recruited he's not--he's 6'4 and now this guy is on the radar--when will have on roster guys who are capable guards in Clark, Starks, Sanford--that is assuming this coach and his staff can develop players outside of frontcourt players--specifically C's and PF--which is the argument used against them in recruiting by a lot of schools--so doing this would just sell that more to schools who use negative recruiting. Believe it when I see it--but if this program has 2 signees of a 6'4 tweener and a 5'9-5'11 guard who has limited athleticism but is scrappy and reminds the coach of his 6'1-6'2 walk on who was a lights out shooter---then don't be surprised when the roster has serious makeover due to guys leaving--which is more proof of lack of developing players/utilizing the roster. Don't recruit people if you never plan on playing them, or it takes them 45 years to figure out the nuances of the system. Ty got to Montrose before Carmelo and no doubt Ty will be the starting PG, but Carmelo will be a nice back-up or else he wouldn't have been invited and accepted. Practicing against each other will make them both better. If Carmelo does well and turns out to be a lights-out shooter, then his coach will find PT for both. As for the Jordan, like similar All-Star games at that age, it's for exposure, which Carmelo got and took advantage of it. As for your hypothetical recruiting/turnover scenario, who knows. What we do know is that other programs have as many good guards on board at once. Next year, we will have three returning guards on the roster, plus Jabril. Only one will be a true point guard. JT3 could add one more guard and maybe he's looking at another point guard. If Carmelo is that guard, so be it. All five guards will compete for PT. That said, I see soph Markel running the show, being a leader and winning an All-BE selection. Carmelo could be his back-up. If Carmelo turns out to have a deadly shot, then he will get PT. Sure, turnover is a possibility, but that's the nature of the game right now. For example, Duke will have to play their five top-rated guards (6', 6'2", 6'2", 6'2", 6'4") on rotation or it's reasonable to expect at least one to transfer. Only one is a senior. With Singler excelling at the 3, we'll see how Coach K manages all those egos and the PT allocation. It gets even more interesting next year with two more top SG coming in next year: top-ranked Rivers and #24 Gbinije.

I'll never understand how people can judge whether or not the staff should even be looking at a player that they've never seen play before.
It's beyond baffling.

I guess the bottom line for the negative judgments is the fact that WE NEED QUALITY SIZE!!! We will have Clark, Starks, Sanford, Trawick and Bowen that can play the guard slots--a couple of unknowns, but seems like a pretty solid group. For big men in 11-12, we will have a greatly underachieving senior in Sims, a greatly undersized junior in Benimon and two question mark sophomores in Moses and Nate. That is a rotation that I can't believe anyone is comfortable with....even if Nate and Moses end up as major studs, it is still a shaky group. I, and others I think, want to see the staff busting their butts on guys 6'9" and up and every story we see about guys 6'4" and under have started to drive us nuts!! That combined with the big guys like Christmas, Chol, O'Bryant, who we seemed to have a strong shot at signing have now seemingly tossed us aside.

I'm not comfortable with it, but I'm not sure how that logical leads to bashing Carmelo the player.
"We don't need another guard" is a lot different than some of the comments on this thread.

The staff has already offered Daniel Ochefu, Brandon Bolden, Andre Drummond, Kaleb Tarczewski and Tony Parker, all of whom just happen to be 2012 bigs. Ochefu and Bolden have visited recently and JTIII went to St. Mark's to see Tarczewski (and Alex Murphy) in person recently. Also, if rumors are true, Ochefu and Tarczewski will be on hand at Midnight Madness. That's not to mention that we're still in the running for Hopkins.
Where is this sense that the staff isn't "busting their butts on guys 6'9" and up" coming from?

That roster has good size. If Sims becomes serviceable, then it's very good size.

Plus, I would rather see Hollis playing the 2 in a pinch than playing the 4 in a pinch. We don't need another guard.

I understand what you are saying, but it seems like it wasn't all that long ago that we were saying the same about Rakeem Christmas, Johnny O'Bryant, Angelo Chol, Michael Chandler, Anthony Davis and a few others. I guess I am just looking for some of the energy being put checking out a 5'10" guard to be put into closing on a quality big man or two. Sorry to contribute to hijacking this thread on Carmelo.....especially if he does end up a Hoya. I certainly have nothing against him and wish him well where ever he ends up. Just venting some frustrations!

You will NEVER get any SF to come to this program if you keep playing them out of position--see Dajuan Summers. -How did the program do when Dajuan played SF? How did they do when he didn't? How has SF recruiting gone since then? I'd consider Bowen a 2G who can play some SF-but with the direction Georgetown is going--he might be playing Center before he'd get to play 2G.
We've got some claiming Starks is more of a "2G" on one board--and that is why this smallish kid is needed to "run the show". Georgetown's system doesn't need a traditional point--they just need skilled people who can pass/shoot/handle the ball--and last time I checked--that is also part of a coaching staff's job--to develop/enhance the skills of the current roster too--so there should be more then enough ball handling for next year--to hold over and recruit better guards in '12 class.
What's wrong with the idea that you could have Rodney Hood/Aaron Bowen/Hollis Thompson all playing on court together? They've done it before successfully with '06-08 teams.
We hear that Moses is a 2/3 year project--well how does it bode well to have him be one of the guys we're assuming will be getting heavy minutes? Lubick and Benimon (an average player who gives you same production in 2-3 minutes he does in 20) supposed to hold down the frontcourt--and we're hoping Henry Sims develops--after getting spotty playing time for 2 years and who knows what this year?
First signee is a 6'4 tweener, and now the heat is being turned up on a 5'10 guard, it's just very concerning to think this approach is going to work/improve the team's fortunes in the Big East Conference.

How has SF recruiting gone since then? Summers left one year early and we got Hollis. So, it's not like the team hasn't had a very good player at SF for several years. Last year, we could have had Summers, Hollis and Austin sharing the 3. That's a loaded position. Summers did great at SF because he had Roy, Green and Wallace to attract the other team's defense. But, where Summers played is not the reason for how well or bad the program did. What if we get Hood? Let's see how that plays out. IMO, this year we'll see Hollis and Austin sharing the majority of PT at the 3, with Bowen getting some play.

Trawick isn't a tweener. He's a 6'4" shooting guard. He has a position.
And LOL at "the heat" being turned up on a 5'10" guard when you could say the EXACT same thing about everyone I listed above in regards to how they're being recruited by Georgetown. Ochefu and Bolden have both been on campus within the last month and been offered scholarships, with Bolden even saying Georgetown is his favorite and Ochefu supposedly visiting for MM. Parker frequently mentions how much his family loves Georgetown and in particular Coach Kirby. JTIII went to see Tarczewski himself in Boston and he's also rumored to be visiting for MM. JTIII also went to see 6'9" Otto Porter last week and offered a schollie and we're rumored to be in the final two for Mikael Hopkins.
But I guess none of that matters when God forbid, the coach checks out a point guard at a local school. It's obvious the staff has wanted to add a point guard in this class from the jump, and with options 1 and 2 (Cook and Ty Johnson) going elsewhere, the coach is looking around. Maybe something comes of it, maybe it doesn't. But to imply that by simply looking at a kid like Betancourt means the staff is neglecting the frontcourt is blatantly false.

You have no concept of what is going on if you are going to list Quinn Cook when talking about someone who even considered coming to Georgetown. That was a "courtesy" listing and never going to happen. After seeing him play--it's a good thing too-he's not what is needed in the program--a guard who can't play defense, is too small, and is a scorer, not a great shooter. Big guards are welcome--and if you have Trawick--why even look at another guard until the '12 class--because Clark and Starks can play the one--not to mention Sanford should be able to by the time he's a JR--but in many scenarios from people he's not a factor at all--so guess player development will be cast aside again or should be in many eyes. Just get some damn players who can help this program and are taller then 6'4 and prefer them to be taller then 6'7--but nothing shorter then 6'4 the rest of this class.

I've stated many times on this board that Quinn Cook was a longshot, I knew that. However, I also know that JTIII really, really, really wanted him and showed him the love because in recruiting, you never know. As far as his game, I'd take him in a second if he wanted to come.
Regardless, all the whining about what the staff is and isn't doing is laughable and it's crazy to me that people seem to think that it's so obvious that after next year, we'd be fine with Markel and Jason playing lead with Vee Sanford third in that pecking order when maybe it's not so obvious to the staff.

For the record I'm not one of those claiming III is not trying to bring in taller wings and big men. My issue is that if you guys are presuming Jason and Vee can't handle point guard responsibilities then that would mean they are simply shooting guards. And if that's the case shouldn't III have decided against bringing in Jabril who is simply one more shooting guard? And shouldn't he have instead used that schollie on a point guard who would fill a greater need?
