We didn't let Cox go. Rutgers offered him a promotion and more $. We obviously didn't feel it was worth it to match.
There's a variety of reasons why people are as high on Cox as on the national board. Nearly all of it is conjecture/unverified "inside info":
- There's no doubt that Cox has done well for Rutgers. Of course, all those guys are spoon-fed from his DC Assault ties to Curtis Malone. He's not getting the elite guys from DCA (Quinn Cook, for example), but he's getting the next rung down.
We're weren't getting those guys through Cox, probably a combination of not wanting some of them while he was here, some of Cox not being able to deliver the truly elite and supposedly because Curtis Malone hates us because Jeff Green didn't pick his hand-picked agent, supposedly at JT, Jrs.'s intervention. (Never mind it's Jeff's decision, and Falk v that guy managin Beasley's career is a no-brainer).
Is the story true? Who knows?
Whatever the reason, who did he sign for us? Perhaps he just needed more time.
- Cox was rumored to be a bit lazy on the trail despite being personable, relying on his DCA connections. I have no idea if that is true.
- Cox was looking for a new job almost immediately after he got here as he is climbing the ladder at all costs.
- There's the impression that he's not much of a coach. He's been a college coach for only three years or so and he's moved up, but he doesn't have 10 years of coaching in college or anything.
