Kickoff of the 2010 XC season starts for both men's and women's teams at Penn State this Saturday. From the list of schools attending, the Hoyas should be favored in the men's field, while the women should be co-favorites along with Princeton in the women's race. This should be a good test of how we will do this year.
Attending Teams:
Women (USTFCCCA Rank; Region Rank): Buffalo California (Pa.) Delaware - Mid-Atlantic, No. 11 Geneseo St. - D-III USTFCCCA, No. 9; Atlantic, No. 2 Georgetown - USTFCCCA, No. 11; Mid-Atlantic, No. 3 Indiana (Pa.) - D-II Atlantic, No. 9 La Salle - Mid-Atlantic, No. 9 Navy - Mid-Atlantic, No. 13 Penn State - USTFCCCA, No. 24; Mid-Atlantic, No. 5 Princeton - USTFCCCA, No. 7; Mid-Atlantic, No. 2 Scranton St. Francis (Pa.) St. Joseph's (Pa.) - Mid-Atlantic, No. 15
Men (USTFCCCA Rank; Region Rank): Buffalo - Northeast, No. 15 California (Pa.) - D-II Atlantic, No. 7 Delaware - Mid-Atlantic, No. 13 Geneseo St. - D-III USTFCCCA, No. 6; Atlantic, No. 2 Georgetown - USTFCCCA, No. 16; Mid-Atlantic, No. 1 Indiana (Pa.) - D-II Atlantic, No. 10 Ithaca La Salle - Mid-Atlantic, No. 6 Navy - Mid-Atlantic, No. 5 Penn State Princeton - USTFCCCA, ORV; Mid-Atlantic, No. 3 Scranton St. Francis (Pa.) Early reports have Georgetown women winning with 28 points, while #7 ranked Princeton second with 45, and #24 ranked Penn State 59. Great running for the women. This will put the women in the top 10 this week in the XC polls.
Only results from the men's race is that Penn State finished 4th.

The men apparently finished 2nd to Princeton. Mark Dennin, the top Hoya returnee had surgery in June and probably will not compete in XC, which is a great loss. James Grimes, the other most experience runner, is just coming off an injury. So GU has to rely on redshirt freshmen and true freshmen mainly.
The Hoya reported that Emily Infeld and Joanna Stevens were held out of today's meet. If that is the case, their win over Princeton is more remarkable.

The men got nipped by Princeton, 52-48. The major runner that they were missing (other than Dennin and Grimes, see above) was Dylan Sorensen. A couple of runners were surprising at how well they ran, including A. Taye, who was our highest finisher at 4th place. The results:
4. A. Taye 25:21.2 (for 5.2 miles) 8. T.C. Lumbar 25:34.1 (other big surprise) 11. Alex Bean 25:48.2 (known more for mid-distance running, gave a good effort today) 12. Andrew Springer 25:52.0 (first XC in Hoya colors for this redshirt freshman) 17. Will Ahear 25:55.0 (good run for this transfer runner) 29. Bobby Peavey 26:17.0 32. Evan Bloomberg 26:23.4 (who?) EDIT: soph transfer 42. Tyler Anyan 26:40.7 (a bit of a disappointment for this true freshman) (might have been running unattached?) 70. Brian Manning 27:15.6 (brother of Hoya great Tommy) 90. Bobby McGann 27:45.5 (another who) (soph) 168. Brian Hencke 29:57.3

The Hoyas placed 4 of the top 10 (and none of them name Infeld or Stevens) in this invitational meet and "ran" away with the title. The results:
1. Emily Jones 20:59.2 (Emily picks up where she left off last year) 2. Renee Tomlin 21:01.5 (back to XC after developing into one of our best mid-distance runner) 5. Madeline Chambers 21:06.2 (surprise of the meet, this freshman wasn't even on my radar in pre-season predictions) 8. Kristin Kasper 21:19.8 (good race for this mid-distance runner) 12. Rachel Schneider 21:39.3 15. Katie McCafferty 21:39.6 (great to see Katie back running after about a year and a half) 24. Lauren Borduin 21:59.7 54. Laura Gallo 23:06.1

Dominant performance by the women. Probably would have gone 1-4 if Stevens + Infeld ran.
Henner's remarks about the men bear little resemblance to their actual performance(unless his expectations were unbelievably low-which they may be given injuries and the big loss of talent from last year. I would have thought that the top frosh recruit would have gone a lot faster, though he might be building slowly as a redshirt--he had finished his hs career incredibly strongly.
It seems like the men will need a couple of very big recruiting years if they are going to have a shot at being a top 10 team again.
