Looks like the sentence about the Georgetown scholarship is no longer in the story when I accessed it.

Could it be Georgetown College or something like that? Still a sad story for a guy who seemed to be trying to do the right things.

Sad story in a recurring pattern in our inner cities. May he RIP.

Yes, it is wrong to spend $2400 on a "real nice" pair of sunglasses when you are "trapped in a terrible environment" boohoohoo and even more wrong when you're bringing more children into that world, who will grow up (fatherless now) in that same terrible environment instead of getting them into normalcy.

I don't care if they are gold plated and diamond encrusted, what the hell is a pair of sunglasses doing going for $2400???
For that amount of money, at the very LEAST I want x-ray specs that can see through women's clothing. I should also be able to plug my iPod into them to watch movies and videos, they should have a switch for 3D for when I go to the movie theater, they should function as a smart phone, and I should be able to tap a button on the frame to turn invisible.
I don't know about "wrong." What John Calipari does is "wrong."
It was his money, he can spend it how he wishes, but I'd definitely call such a purchase "irresponsible," particularly for someone who is not independently wealthy.
Irregardless, he certainly didn't deserve to be killed because of it, of course. Sad.

with the amount of fact checking (see Georgetown transfer comment) I wouldn't be surprised if this number is not right....

You act like its wrong to buy yourself a real nice pair of glasses with the money you earned working during the summer. Some things are excessive, and some are EXCESSIVE. I think the most I have spent for sun glasses is about $50 (yes, I am cheap, but I keep breaking or losing them). As I said, he was free to spend his hard earned money on sunglasses, but I would think that there would be more important things to spend the money on. I would say the same thing if he were a millionaire athlete. Again, as other people have said, it was not worth killing over, and may he RIP.

This man obviously didn't deserve to be a victim of murder, and his killing is a terrible loss to his family and friends. But something just sounds odd about a story of a man trying to make it out of a dangerous living situation, but was killed over an accessory that cost thousands of dollars.
Sunglasses = $2400
OR
Public library internet use - $0 Suitcase - $100.00 Cab Ride from Detroit to nice suburb of Farmington Hills, MI - $50? Farmington Hills Apt. (Fairmont Park, 2 bedroom) - $950 + $200 deposit = $1150.00 Money left to find job before you're SOL - $1100
And that's assuming he used his entire savings on the glasses.

with the amount of fact checking (see Georgetown transfer comment) I wouldn't be surprised if this number is not right.... Obviously. I'd bet $2.40 that the actual value of the glasses was $240. Regardless, that's so insignificant in relation to what the article is actually about.

He played at Tiffin Univ. from 2007 to 2009. His former coach at Tiffin is an asst. at Bethune-Cookman and was trying to get him into a school. Google him if you want more info.

It's a sad story and awful that he has a child.
A quick perusal of Cartier site gave me at least $1700 sunglasses, so I'm not sure that number is wrong. I didn't check much but got $450, $690 and $1690+ sunglasses.
