Marquette fan here with a question. It's been quite awhile since I visited this board, but I have a question that I hope someone will be able to answer.
It relates to D.J. Newbill, who committed to MU last January and then signed an LOI in April. According to our coach, one of our recruits (we assume Newbill) knew when he signed that MU was still recruiting for another position, and that if the staff got a player it wanted, then the previous signee would attend prep school for a year but still have a scholarship available for 2011. In two interviews in April Buzz stated that everyone involved knew the situation and was on board with it.
Then in late June, Wisconsin native Jamil Wilson, a 6'7"/6'8" forward received his release from Oregon and contacted Buzz to let him know he'd like to transfer.
The long and short of it from that point was that Newbill no longer had a scholarship. However, instead of attending prep school, which was what MU fans thought would happen, he said the whole thing came as a surprise, that he knew nothing about it. (He since chose to attend Southern Mississippi.)
However, for some reason he had never completed his application and sent it in to MU, even by late June when this all went down, meaning he was the only incoming frosh not registered for summer school, which started the first week in July.)
Anyway, both then and recently Newbill claimed that he had offers from both West Virginia and Georgetown, but that, because he had signed with MU, he could no longer play in the Big East, which, he claimed, was his dream. He basically said, why would he sign with MU under those conditions when he could have gone to Georgetown.
I did a bit of research and could find nothing indicating that JT-3 had offered Newbill, so I figured I'd check to see if anyone here knew what the situation, if any, was between Newbill and Georgetown.
I just have a hard time believing that the Hoyas offered him a scholarship, but in none of his interviews in January or in April did Newbill mention it.
Can anyone respond?
By the way, for the record, a lot of us MU fans do not like the way this played out. Even if Newbill knew a scholarship might not be there for him, many of us don't like the concept of oversigning.
But that's another issue. All I'm really interested in right now is whether or not someone can confirm that Newbill was offered a scholarship by JT-3 prior to his commitment to MU.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can clarify.
