I caught the tail end of a discussion on the way in to work this morning. I think it was whomever is sitting in for Tim Brando, but I'm not positive. It was definitely a National show, but I didn't recognize the voice right offhand. In any case, he was talking about Gumble's comments -- pretty sure he said Bryant, but couldn't swear to it, so it might have been Greg. The host said that maybe he (Gumble) was taking the easy way out, by simply criticizing Nascar fans. He said something to the effect that it's a cheap cop out, because whenever something goes wrong, you can make fun of Nascar fans. "It's almost unfair." Personally, that comment is a bit of a stretch for someone supposed to be a neutral sports journalist. Now if the tone of the show is that of a Howard Stern or even a Jim Rome, then I think you know what to expect. And again, I don't know exactly who this guy was. Either way, he was commenting and expounding on something Gumble said. Apparently, the exact phrase was that Gumble commented or asked about the race this week calling it the "Billy Bob 500." Now is that comment appropriate? I didn't hear the comment personally, so I don't know the context, but from everything I heard, there was no special context. It was simply a derogatory comment about a sport and its fans. Now I will defend his right to make such comments, but I do think it's not in his best interests, unless he is seeking a career move in the direction of a controversial and confrontational host, like a Howard Stern. But I also think it's simply inappropriate. The clear implication is that of uneducated, southern, truck-driving rednecks. But if someone uses an alternative stereotypical label -- for examply "Bubbas from the hood," the comment and the individual would be lambasted.
Did anyone else hear that show and what are your thoughts?
