Hibbert Green Summers Monroe
NBA/future NBA players. Ewing, Jr. was drafted by the Suns.
My question in this, when JTIII arrived with the Princeton offense, did you think he would produce more guards than bigs to the NBA? Or at least some guards.
Any thoughts?

My question in this, when JTIII arrived with the Princeton offense, did you think he would produce more guards than bigs to the NBA? Or at least some guards. Any thoughts? Not necessarily. What do guards have to do in this offense that specifically translates to the NBA? Pass, read defenses, shoot? That's any offense. So getting a guard that can run a motion offense is not that big a deal. Basically we COULD put a guard in the league, but I don't think there is anything special about our offense that would make it more likely. Put it this way, when your offense is five guys playing essentially interchangeably, who is most likely to get the NBA contract? Answer: the biggest guy on the floor.

Besides I think Austin still has a good chance to get drafted next year. I could see him sneaking into the back of the first round, but more than likely he'll go near the beginning of the second round. I could see chris getting drafted in the second round depending on how he plays next year. And frankly we just haven't had as many highly rated guards out of high school as we have had big men. I also agree with Giga's assessment.

Agree with Giga, III's system enhances the skills of big men. Makes them into point forwards or point centers. Big men move out from basket and work hard each day in practice on their moves to the basket by dribbling or working on their 10-12 foot jump shot. System developes a more rounded big man. Also with NBA now allowing teams to play zone defense, most NBA team use the switching man-to-man defense that works like a zone. Agree with "the_way" also if knowledge of his system is equal III favors height over athleticism. Both Green and Hibbert started as freshmen because it was III's first year and everyone on the team had the same amount of experience with his system. Green was the most talented on team but Hibbert was not the most talented or athletic player as compared to Owen or Bowman at that time of his developement.

I think both Chris and Austin are NBA guys.....and before its said and done, we'll put alot more 3/4's in the league, similar to Jeff, than true big guys

Yeah as daytona said I think that we are going to become more of "Wing U" then Big Man U...but every big man should still come here because you need to be molded into a wing to succeed in the NBA.

It's not a total coincidence, especially since Pops remains a coach/adviser/whatever that helps lure in talented big men.

Yep, that plus I argue that our big men go through the best development program in college. You learn a wide range of skills you don't at other schools and play a well-rounded role. On defense, our switching style preps players much more for NBA defenses, since switching/hedging and playing the pick and roll all require similar tools and skills and are much more prevalent in the NBA. Our guards develop as well, but the role is much more similar to other systems and in some areas less demanding. But big men -- you don't get to do all that in other systems. It gets you ready.

Opposing coaches and writers seem to realize that Chris and Austin are future NBA players. The folks most need of convincing may be Hoya fans. I think Chris can easily be a first round pick after next season if he picks up where he left off at the end of this past season. He doesn't have great height but acceptable height for a pg. He is quick. He is strong. He can finish. He is a respectable shooter who seems to be getting better on that front. Most importantly under III he has morphed into more of a true point guard. He is no longer just a shooting guard in a point guard's body. Playing in III's system has taught Wright restraint and made him look more for his teammate. He should be ready to help an NBA team immediately even if its just as a rookie coming off the bench. Freeman's situation got more complicated by his diabetes situation. Plus he was always short for the SG spot at the pro level. That being said I think Free is a legit NBA player. He is about the same height as Wayne Ellington who was drafted in the first round of the 2009 NBA draft. And I think Freeman is a better player than Ellington. Both could shoot the rock but Freeman is a better ball handler, a better passer, better at driving to the basket and stronger. Ellington may have the edge when it comes to quickness though. Point is Freeman can shoot the ball. And not just when he's opened. He can shoot it with bigger guys in his face; he can shoot it off the dribble; he can shoot long range and the make the mid shot too; he can pull up on a fast break and make the shot.. That type of shooting is still valued in the NBA. III is about to send a couple of guards to the NBA. I have no doubt about this.

I think it is worth noting that recruits are also recognizing Georgetown's sucess with bigs under JTIII.
Georgetown has made the list of the final 5 schools in consideration for the top three centers (acc. to Rivals) in the Class of 2011: Rakeem Christmas, Michael Chandler, Angelo Chol.
