A lot of smoke is starting to build around Nerlens Noel, Shabazz Muhammad, and Anthony Bennett all committing to Kentucky the second week of April on ESPNU. Would be a pretty impressive front court, smh. I can totally see that happening. And if recent history is to guide us here, where is KY's prized class in 2012? That would certainly qualify. They will win it all this year, they will lose Teague-MKG-Jones-Davis-Miller-Lamb and then those three commit, along with Harrow becoming eligible and the guy they already have whose name escapes me. Makes sense.

I'd much rather have this than Noel at Cuse. I really could care less what KY does - it's just a matter of time until their NBA-prep program will collapse.

Couldn't the NCAA put an end to the way Kentucky does business by just making grades of one and done players count against a school’s APR (Academic Progress Rate). I mean, these players competed in both semesters, so their grades should count. As it stands, one and done players never existed when it comes to monitoring a schools APR, which seems like a giant loophole.

Madgesdiq, IIRC, I'm pretty sure the APR does count those grades. If a player leaves at the end of the year in good academic standing, they'll get 3 out of 4 possible APR points (2 for eligibility, 1 for retention). If they stop going to class and don't get passing grades, they'll get 2 out of 4 (1 eligibility, 1 retention, both from the fall semester).

I think what he means is that while the year they are there counts for the APR the other 3 years a players in theory should play at a school do not. They don't get 0-4s for the next 3 years. They could start doing this, but that would also affect every player who transfered(potentially) or left early for the NBA.
I feel like they can't really do that. It would destroy a school's APR for just a single one and done prospect. It would hurt the schools who have no way to make kids stay if they do not want to stay. Which would probably eventually hurt players too because the one and done players would not be able to find schools willing to accept them anymore and also not able to go to the NBA.
The only way to really get rid of one and done is for the NBA to make a rule like the NFL or MLB.

ouch. hopefully more speculation. just wish we could get a little extra speculation our way. We rarely do. Sometimes that's good (Monroe), sometimes it's not.

Seems like Nerlens is almost certainly a one and done, and if that's the case, then it's awfully hard to compete with Kentucky. As galling as it is, this has become their niche - the can't miss pros who are interested in doing a one year apprenticeship before turning pro and cashing in. I'm amazed we're still in it and haven't lost all hope yet, but Kentucky offers an "atmosphere" that, when it comes down to it, few of us would want Georgetown to match.

The circus atmosphere that ring master Caliperi can provide for these one and done players can not be matched. If you are a McDonald's AA looking for only one year of college basketball and you are guaranteed a starting position because of the previous one and done players leaving as is the case with Kentucky this year then it's hard to make a kid not go there. That is why I am hoping the basketball gods help Petino get his vengeance on the Kentucky faithfully that have been riding him pretty good since he left Kentucky. Kentucky sold its soul to Caliperi in order to get another NCAA championship. All the top ten recruits and winning records will not mean a thing unless he delivers a championship. It is hard to do with a team made of one and done players unless some of them stay 2 years. Jones did it this year and I am sure he is regretting that decision because his draft stock has dropped. Don't look for others at Kentucky to follow his example. Their starting five will all be gone next year. Caliperi knows this will be his best shot for sometime to come. Since the Hoyas lost I have been rooting for two teams to lose, Cuse and Kentucky. Half my wish has been fulfilled, now only if Petino can somehow psyche his players up to play a "1985 Villanova" type game then my summer will be very happy.

Kentucky would just cheat and make sure that all the guys who leave early do so with a 4.0. Classroom attendance, purchase of books, or even presence on campus not necessary.

Why do people get upset about Kentucky doing the 1 and done thing? That's not the issue that is a problem. It's HOW they land them that I've got a problem with and rules are in place to punish that--but are rarely enforced and certainly are never enforced when the actions take place. For those upset with how they do business-look at the info we found out last week about Errol Randolph/Nerlens--and how it's "no big deal" to any media outlets--that have far more time/ability to look into this then a fan on a messageboard.
1 and done is not illegal. As long as guys go to class and make progress towards being Sophomores academically, then fine by me. As a fan, I enjoy seeing the talented players in college even if for 1 year (I prefer the Straight to NBA/ 2 year minimum rule if you sign LOI-but so does Calipari).
Can't fault them for taking advantage of the rule, and they flourish with 1 and dones--so it's more jealousy then anything when people get upset about that. It also speaks to the fact the guy can coach--like/don't like him. It's one thing to get young talent, another to get them to play as a team.
