It was a very emotional night. Anyone not convinced that GM IS A TRUE HOYA SHOULD HAVE BEEN THERE. Congratulations to JV for winning the coaches award.

If Greg is upset that he is not a true Hoya, he should have thought first before he decided not to be born in Georgetown University Hospital.

Nobody went. Maybe some nuggets from the CasualHoya Twitter feed later. I'm responsible for about 2/3 of tonight's updates on the Hoop Club Twitter feed: twitter.com/hoyahoopclubI stopped at Coach's speech b/c he's told us before he likes to keep the comments mainly in house. Not that posting on Hoyatalk is at all a problem, just since I was writing for the official HHC feed, I tend to keep it well within the boundaries they set. Good time. Impossible not to come away from these happy about the program. Greg cried during his speech, and Henry Sims is the strangest human being to ever compete for a starting center position at Georgetown. There were potato skins. Someone else take it from here.

In the third year Henry arose from the dead to become a star, if he doesn't follow what the coach says, he can go back into his tomb.

Thanks, FL. Appreciate the Twittered coverage. I was just reacting to the proven fact that there is always a preemptive banquet info request thread before dinner is even finished.

Just got home from banquet. In my mind, Greg Monroe a "true Hoya" (despite not being born in Georgetown University Hospital).

Lots of lic-related hilarity, as well as the comedic stylings of Matt Henry. III said a lot of good things and was bolder in some of his pronouncements than I've known him to be (and no, I don't mean his pronouncement that Hollis has the attention span of a 2-week old labrador). There was no basketball-themed desert this year.
Also, FLHoya and I decided that Lee Reed kind of looks like Ron Artest.

Coach emphasized that while Monroe is heading for the next challenge, he is not "leaving" Georgetown, as he will always be a part of the Georgetown community. Coach also mentioned that, much like Hibbert who returned to campus this week to train with Vaughn, he expects that Monroe too will soon return to train with current players, as will Chris Wright one day, and so forth.
Monroe's impromptu speech made it quite clear to everyone in attendance that he loves being a Hoya, and that he has cherished his time on the hilltop and the connections he has made. More than what he said, it was the way he said it. Coach also informed the crowd that Monroe has promised both his mother and JTIII that he will continue working towards earning his degree.
JTIII gave out two Coaches Awards. As mentioned earlier, one went to Vaughn. The second went to Dougherty, who Coach said has been an integral part of the team. Dougherty will be a co-captain next year with Freeman and Wright.
Congrats to Lic for his lifetime award. Well deserved.
A terrific night. So incredibly proud of our team. We have a very special program.

I am living out in Tanzania these days and so it was the first banquet I have missed in many years. I am sad not to have been there but I very much appreciate the updates that convey the significance and emotion of the evening. Through your comments I feel the pride, the warmth and the joy we all get from following athletics at Georgetown.
Many thanks to you, the coaching staff and the team! Hoya Saxa!

Thanks for the reports guys. Very interested but not surprised to hear about Greg's comments.
GAMMO -- good to hear from you. Any chance you'll be in DC next year for a game or two?

I understand Coach wanting to keep his speech mostly in house, but if anyone feels it not inappropriate to indulge us a little bit, how was it? Any reference to the Ohio game (or other disappointing losses), and/or what the team needs to do next year to be successful?

A lot of great stuff.
Henry: he's a natural showman. Got a standing ovation... can't remember what for, but he hammed it up nicely. Was that an orange tie?
DeGioia's comment: some schools talk about their fans as "x" nation; Gtown, however, is global and the basketball team is a (the?) face of that global community. JTIII picked up on that, really liked it.
Matt Henry: started his introduction to the players with a great line: "The talk of this Spring has been, 'Is he coming back?' Well...(pause)... I'm back"

So I've heard Julian and Ryan got the two coaches awards. But who exactly got what? How was the crowd/attendance?

Stray thoughts from a stray mind:
Can anymore be said about the awards to JV and RD ?
Is RD a future coach? I recall seeing III chatter to him several times during games.
As MH will tell you, without the DBO, nothing happens.
I'm glad the issue of GM's Hoya credentials has been put to rest.
I'm delighted to hear that Regular Man is as strange as I thought. I'm pro-strange. It's the only viewpoint that makes sense. Do it, HS! ;D
Congrats to lic for making this banquet necessary.

HSB -- the Coaches (or is that Coach's?) Awards were just that -- generic. JTIII indicated that normally you'd give out an MVP or MOP and you could pick among Greg, Chris, Austin but said he'd only give out two awards. He said RD had a maturity beyond his years and the guys on the squad know the value of RD, and he will be a captain next year. JTIII alluded to personal issues that JV had to deal with w/o going into specifics because that's how we (Gerogetown) are, or words to that effect. I think most of us could figure that out.
My understanding is that it was basically a sell out. Had a few empty seats at my table. For you old timers, I was sitting with Norm Washington, former ass't coach (1980-82) and had a good time reminiscing about the old days. Gene Smith was also in attendance.
