I meant to comment on this before. A couple of days ago, the Big 10 announced their decisions concerning their divisions. I honestly thought it was a joke when I first heard it, but it wasn't. The Big 10 commissioner announced that the 2 divisions would be called the Legends and the Leaders. What? That's makes the least sense of any such groupings that I have ever heard. What was wrong with "East" and "West," which could be done relatively easily? No, they decided to keep the Conference name as the "Big 10" (with 12 teams) and to divided them into the Legends group of 6 and the Leaders group of 6. That is just baffling. Well, apparently I'm not alone in my thinking. The responses since the announcement is running 90-95% AGAINST the decision, and the Big "10" is now considering alternatives.
Down here we were kicking around other possibilities just for the fun of it. The divisions that I thought made the most sense were the "Great Lakes" and "Great Plains" divisions. While the 6 teams in each division wouldn't be a perfect fit, there's enough accuracy to make it fit.
In all seriousness, the divisions being aligned in some form of East and West would make the most sense and save the most dollars. Travel costs alone would be much more attractive with such an alignment.
The other suggestion someone submitted, probably tongue-in-cheek, but which still makes the most sense is like this:
Badgers
Wolverines
Lions
Tigers
Hawkeyes
Wildcats
and then
Hoosiers
Illini
Buckeyes
Boilermakers
Corn Huskers
Spartans
He called the first division the "Claws and fangs" division and the second, "Men and Machines" division.
That's a pretty decent effort I thought. And is there any doubt that it's better than "legends" and "leaders?"
