Posted this in the other one but Dan locked it:
Too bad Greg, you could have had a National Championship! We will be top-15 next year, our backcourt and experience are still huge. Although no one will replace Greg, everyone has their own tools to bring to the table, even Moses. Nate will need to step it up but I'm not too worried about him. Moses just needs to contribute on defense, don't worry about anything else! Henry? Who knows about Henry, I'm not sure what he will contribute but hopefully a little bit of everything plus intensity! I really think that Greg leaving will actually help Henry a little, freeing up a little more room for Henry to be Henry and not Greg's backup. I hope Julian works primarily on his conditioning this off-season, but of course some polish wouldn't help.

Good luck to Greg. I hope he ends up on a team where he fits in and where he can grow into the player he should become. Utah I think would be nice for him.
Also don't lose sight of what vamos said. We have had a good run of putting guys in the NBA the last 4 years, with 5 overall draftees, 3 first rounders, and 2 lottery picks (assuming Greg satisfies all of those). That's a good track record for recruiting. Someone posted a quote the other day from some recruit that I don't remember but that was gushing about Cal's 1 and dones and how that's a great thing to look for. Well we won't be good for 1 and done types, but other kids might gush over us putting someone in the NBA every single year.

Wish Greg good luck going forward. Pretty surprised he left though considering he has stated how much legacy means to him and he will have zero legacy at Georgetown and his time here will be forgotten 2 or 3 years down the road. 0 ncaa wins and 0 big east hardware...pretty shocking

With Greg leaving, don't we have another scholarship open for next year? If so, is there anyone on our radar?
Good luck Greg. College is one of the best times of one's life, so I hope you make the most of your decision.

Katz thinks we go from Big East contender to "middling" Big East team w/o Monroe. That's a pretty surprising sentiment if he said that. I bet he will change his thoughts on that. Best of luck to Greg, but I still think we are a good team right now.

Sad, to think we had a player so good and couldn't win 1 ncaa game. Next year i think will be average. I'll still watch everygame and cheer but my expectations will be low. Good luck,Greg!

As stated a couple weeks ago, GM had made his decision but wanted to get everything aligned before announcing it. Plus, he isnt the type to bail on school and never be seen around DC. He will finish the semester. Those within the program knew and the returning players now need to really shift their focus to what they will need to do for the Hoyas to be successful. GM's production will not be replaced by one or even two guys. It has to be a piecemeal effort and our guys need to get serious about it because it begins now. I still think we have a good chance to contend in the conference and nationally.

Good luck to Greg, he'll represent himself and GU well in the NBA.
As for next season, if guys work their butts off this summer and take their games up another level, I'm not as worried as I think a lot of fans are. Everyone but Greg is coming back and we add two guys in Markel and Nate who will be able to give us solid minutes from day one and Moses, at the very least, is five hard fouls off the bench. Never seen Aaron play, but if he can just attack the rim on the break and knock down open jumpers, then I love our depth.
Of course I wanted Greg to come back, but I honestly think we'll be better than a middle of the pack team in the Big East.

Greg, you will be sorely missed. I, like most others on this board, really enjoyed watching you play and thank you for representing the Hoyas so well.
I would have loved having you stay one more year but totally respect your decision. Best of luck my man!!

It's ABSURD to say "you could have had a National Championship" Hometown--that is wrong in so many ways and to put that on one guy--well maybe that is why this program has sputtered the past few postseasons. Since '08--Georgetown is 1-2 in 2 NCAA appearances and 0-1 in NIT in between, so what had you confident this group wins National Title if Monroe returns?
I love Monroe's talent--think he's ideal type of "star" to recruit--one who has ability to leave when he wants--but takes school/education seriously--he still attended classes and has been a great representative during his time at Georgetown and no doubt will be in NBA.
That said--Hoyas will have most players returning they have had in years--12 man roster (scholarship players) and while their style of play might have to go more uptempo--it's on the OTHER END of the court they need to improve if they want to do anything--and that is if Monroe returned.
Matt Howard, Brian Zoubek, Lance Thomas just played for National Title--it's not about having a great big--it's about having great TEAM and great teams play on BOTH ENDS OF COURT and CONSISTENTLY--so that is what I'm looking for and enjoying the challenge ahead. Talent is there--now just need guys to step up, and take step of turning talent into consistent team.

When saying that, I wasn't meaning that it's Greg's responsibility, but that with him we had all of the components of a National Championship TEAM. We have great experience and depth across the board but it would have been much better if we had Greg as our starting PF and the rest of our big men as role players, not contributors. I agree that we need major improvements on defense to do better in the post-season, even if Greg had stayed. Sorry, I wasn't meaning to pin it ALL on Greg but I do feel like we don't have the same potential and ceiling (Nat'l. Championship) without him. Fortunately, we do still have GREAT players and recruits giving us experience and depth, so I am looking forward to see what adjustments and changes Coach will make and to see how far Freeman can take us!

Good luck, Greg....I love watching you and know you will be great in the league.
A message to some on this thread: We will be anything BUT average next season. There is one team in the country who has as good or better a backcourt than us and that's Michigan State. Other than them, I'll put Chris, Austin, Jason and Markel up against anyone.
I fully expect this team to be final four good next season, and I've said that for awhile. This will be a great team next season.

Right decision for the kid given the current economics of the NBA. Does it "doom" the Hoyas? Not even close. It will require another adjustment by JT III for next year because he will not have the threat down low at the outset. It will also expose Julian Vaughn somewhat because he will not get the benefit of Monroe's persence. However, if JT III will try hard at the beginning of the season to extend the bench and play Lubick and Abraham along with Sims and Benimon, we have basically got 5 players for 2 positions. Let them make mistakes and let them stumble--even if they don't get the "system" right out of the box. Essentially next year we have Vaughn and 4 inexperienced players. The backcourt will be just fine. I would use the backcourt depth to add full court pressure to the defense.

I really like the team next year if they get up and down more. Think it's what they did best this past season and really believe it's style that best suits the personnel. How they do as a team will depend all on defensive end of the court.
Program will be fine--and team has known before any of us what is going on--so they just push forward. Really think it's imperative to not force a system on the players and instead adjust to what you have--and while Nate has a great hoops IQ/passing skills--he's best near the basket to utilize his physical style and rebounding prowess. Sims is going to have his chance to show how good he can be--and I've got faith in him to show that--he's a talented guy who needs to understand he's going to be counted on--so it's up to him how his career plays out. I say he steps up and has strong year.
Perimeter wise--only Michigan State and Duke have backcourt talent that Georgetown has--and Daytona you have to put Duke there--they've got Irving-who is Coach K's best guard he's had talent wise, Nolan Smith, Seth Curry, Andre Dawkins, Tyler Thornton--that is a very good group too.
Hoyas should flourish with Wright, Freeman, Clark, Thompson, Sanford, Starks, and Bowen, who keeps growing on me when I see more game film of him.
No reason to not be an improved team this year.

I knew that as soon as I stopped checking, he'd declare. Selfishly disappointed, but he made the right choice for he and his family. Good luck, and I'll root for whatever team he's on. (Unless he's playing Jeff. Like Patrick Ewing 20 years ago, Jeff Green is the first among equals for JT III's guys for me.)
It's silly to try to spin this into a good thing. But college basketball has been a guard's game for a long time now, and you never know when a team is going to put it all together. Play defense and rebound, and we'll have a chance.

Good luck to Greg Monroe. I was looking forward to the hype machine that would have followed the Hoyas next year with him, but this decision makes sense on so many levels. I will always appreciate a kid like Greg who was a #1 recruit and a great student as well. He embodied what we all want Hoyas to be. Happy to watch him fulfill his potential in the NBA.
That said, looking to next season, we should have enough talent to be very good. Let's see if we can put it all together.

I feel bad for Chris and Austin. They gave it everything they had, supported whatever III did and supported Greg being the man. Now they are seniors on a team that will be rebuilding its front line without the Big Man of the year. For guards to go to the next level, you need bigs to get boards and set them up. They will have all green talent up front.

Good luck to you, Greg Monroe!
Thanks for giving it your all while you were here.
Wish it had been for one more year, but I can't begrudge you your decision.
