I think this belongs on the main board as it talks only about committed players who are expected to be on this year's upcoming team, and it's the offseason.
It's an insider article I believe, but I'll post the Hoya-related content.
Georgetown should have most of its core back next season, and this recruiting class should help the Hoyas become a factor come March. PF Nate Lubick (Southborough, Mass./St. Mark's School) is a skilled 4-man who is a tough, solid athlete. He is a good shooter with range to 17 feet. He also is a very skilled passer, which is a major asset in Georgetown's system. His jumper and ability to move make him a great pick-and-pop big guy. He could work on his conditioning over the summer. Markel Starks (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep) is an athletic point guard who can score and distribute. He has great size and solid skill. Starks has the ability blow by the opposition, but his jumper makes it tough for defenders to back off him. Moses Abraham (Camp Springs, Md./Progressive Christian) is a defense-first big guy with a high ceiling. He would benefit from practicing against some of Georgetown's refined post players. At 6-5, Aaron Bowen (Jacksonville, Fla./Quality Education Academy) has great size for the 2-guard spot.

I really like this class. Just a solid group that can be the foundation of an elite team when they are upperclassmen.

i think class wil OVERPERFORM their 19th ranking for sure and if greg stays and they go to the weight room THESE GUYS ARE JT3 TYPE PLAYERS for sure cant wait for kenner YES  |

I agree that this class will outperform some of the classes ahead of them. It is a balanced class with a good mix of 'play now' and potential.

When it's all said and done this class will be much better than 19... This is a very well rounded class. This is JT3 best class yet... That's an interesting thought, oldirtyku. IS this JT3's best class yet? The Class that started WITH JT3 -- his first year as head coach -- was only partially JT3's first class because all but one of the players had previously committed to GU. Of course, JT3 had to persuade them not to change their commitment. It may not be fair to say it was out and out JT3's first class, but the group that included Jeff, Roy and Jon was certainly the best to enter GU during JT3's time as HC -- so far. '05: Egerson, Spann and Thornton all transferred out, but Jessie was a four year contributor and Pat Jr was awesome! The '06 class of Summers, Macklin and Rivers LOOKED like it would be his best, but did not turn out that way. '07 Includes Chris and Austin -- pretty outstanding twosome -- with two transfers (Nikita, Omar). '08 Greg? WOW! And Jason, Julian and...Henry. Jury is still out on Henry. Jason has been a major contributor who still has his two upperclassman years to go, and Julian has been... OK so far. '09? Probably JT3's weakest. Hollis looks like he can be a significant contributor. Vee, I think (and HOPE!) he will be a four year factor at GU. Jerrelle? '10? I think Starks will be the best of this bunch, but we also have Lubick who is likely to be a serious 4 year contributor. Moses and Aaron each seem to have a LOT of potential, but... who knows? I hope for the best. So which class should be considered the best so far? The board is open for discussion! |

Hollis has the athleticism to make the NBA and both Vee and Jerrelle will be leaders on this team someday. As of Coach's real recruiting classes its hard to tell which is best. 07 gave us the best twosome in Chris and Austin, 08 gave us our star in Greg (and AllMet POY JC) and 2 role players, and the '10 class, who knows until they are here.The past two offseasons everyone has thought that Henry will be a big time contributor but he just hasn't developed yet. To be honest, I really find no real problem in Coach's recruiting while he has been here. Yes he has missed out on many of his first choices but thats life and he has been able to get players who were not as highly touted but still could become role players. Transfers hurt but it would hurt more to have a player that did not want to play for us on the team, bringing the other players down. Additionally, outside of Macklin, all of our transfer's have had no real impact on our team and did not have large roles and our incoming transfers have been able to develop and actually receive minutes because they are excited about being here. |

Yeah, I really have no problem with the transfers. I hate that transfers bail on their commitment to this University, but as far as how THESE transfers have impacted THIS basketball team, I think most of them had no impact or a positive impact. I don't know anything about Thornton, so can't say. And Egerson and Macklin could have been contributors but hadn't reached that point by the time they left. Spann, Nikita, Omar, Rivers—I'd rather an empty spot on the bench than any one of them. So the transfers are not really reasons for me to question JTIII.
I think his '08 class is his best (aside from the half-his-class first group of Jeff/Roy/Jon). Jason was really a huge factor this year. Greg has been Greg. And I think Julian has been better than OK. I think Julian changed this team. Imagine we didn't have him—we'd have no second big man, no banger, no help for Greg. I love Julian for what he brings to this team. Henry...we'll see.
His '09 class seemed like a downer at first b/c we had already gotten used to Hollis being on the bench, so I think we may have expected him to be even more developed as a freshman. And Vee and Jerelle weren't all that highly ranked, so it may have seemed like a bust to "settle" for them. Now, after seeing them play for a year, I think the by his junior year, Hollis will be a leader on the team, Vee could be starting, and Jerelle will absolutely be a huge contributor as a 6th man/back-up big. Neither Vee nor Jerelle looked to me like guys we "settled" on. I think III accurately assessed their talent and jumped on two guys who were not accurately placed in the rankings.
This '10 class looks like it will rival '08 in that there are 4 guys, all of whom could be major contributors. Sure, maybe one of them won't be ready his freshman year. Maybe one of them will need some time, like Julian. Maybe one will need even more time, like Henry. But if Greg stays and we add even just TWO meaningful freshman + Vee having proven his studliness + everyone else becoming one year more experienced, one year better prepared...that could be enough.

I don't think Vernon or Rivers are particularly great players but its very hard to see how they would not have helped the team this past year. First, having two solid (at least) role players as depth on this team would have been great. Secondly, our biggest problem this year was defense! Sure Rivers can't shoot a lick but he can stay in front of his guy and play great defense. Instead of looking to an exhausted Jason Clark down the stretch we could have put Rivers on guys like Butler and Bassett.
With respect to Macklin, its obvious having an extra big who can at least rebound and block shots would have been helpful this year. He had a solid season at Florida and at the very least he could have given minutes when Julian was fighting that end of year sickness.
The irony of their transfers is of course that despite the fact that they got away from the system that they ended up maligning so much, neither of them really look like they benefited all that greatly. The projections of how they would have helped are also obviously speculative considering how they would have effected recruiting, etc if they'd stayed.

Actually, Macklin's been pretty good down in Florida, and I don't remember him trashing the system on his way out like Rivers did. I think both, especially Macklin regret their decisions in hindsight because when they left III really opened things up and we started to score and run which is really all they ever wanted, especially Macklin.
As for Rivers, I don't like him NOW, and I laugh at him NOW, but those that contend on this thread that he was of little use either have serious revisionist history or they weren't Hoya fans when he was a part of the program. His defense was simply invaluable to us and to put it plainly we've missed his ability to defend a ton. Even this season, we've missed his ability to come of the bench and play 20 minutes a game at three spots, whether he was an offensive liability or not.
As for the best class? I'm going with 07. It will be the only class that III has brought in that will produce two all-league players, and two NBA guys, which is what Wright and Freeman are. Two superstars in one class is tough to beat. I love the 08 class, and I think when all is said and done this upcoming class will be remembered as the best and most well rounded.

Gota keep in mind, Julian is likely not here if Vern still is.
So we likely would have been in the same type of situation in regards to depth up front.

He might have and might have wanted to, but I'm not sure the staff takes on Julian with Vernon in the fold. At that point there were still high hopes for Henry as well.
All in all, I'll take the trade off, with the kicker being the extra year we'll get out of Julian.
