Steve Russell, the sports director of WRUF, quoted the Big 10 commissioner who was at the NIT semifinals last night, as saying that expansion to 96 teams for 2011 is "probable." I'm not sure what position this guy has with the NCAA, but for what it is worth, Steve considered him somewhat of an insider. Then Steve aired an interview with Billy and coach D. said that he was in favor of expansion. His reasoning was the joy that he saw in the players eyes as they sat together watching the selection show, and that expansion will only allow more to experience that feeling. I am sitting on the fence on this one. On one hand, diluting the tournament isn't an automatic improvement. On the other hand, the net effect will be some more competitive basketball and probably less NIT. Both of those are good things.
