skills/dunk competition was on last night.
Kendall ripped through the skills first tiem around, but looked slow and tired during the finals and finished last.
6'1 kid (Ray) looking at UCLA who they called babyfaced killer had impressive ups throught the dunk contest, and the kid most likely ending up at Nova (Cory Joseph) was stroking it to win the 3pt contest.
Otherwise, have to be impressed going into college with kids like 6'11" Perry Jones who are atheletically opposites of hibbert/monore but without the refined skill set...always interesting if they pan out.
Barnes looked good too from what I saw for a big guy who can shoot.

Terrance Jones is our biggest miss from this class. He would've been a great pick up for us

Kendrick and Jones were two of my favorites in this class (of the guys we were recruiting/looked at). But I like the composition of what we got. So word is UNC is going after McCallum now. If they land him, Marshall will be sharing his PG duties. Marshall = Joe Mazzulla??? Just sayin'.

Agree as well. Jones would have been a good fit and is a good player. Less impressed with the center (Smith) going to UCLA but only watched him in one game...

Interesting facts:
-The Cleveland Cavaliers lead the NBA with 10 McDonald's All Americans.
-Every team in the NBA has a McDonald's All-American, with the least on any team being 2.
-141 of 428 NBA players are McDonald's All Americans (1 out of every 3).

Terrance Jones will end up being the best in this class. His versatility is that of an Evan Turner, except he has the body to dominate right now.
Was not impressed with Josh Smith. He has to get that weight down!
Brandon Knight is a super chucker. I cant even imagine a team with him, Boynton, and the small pg they have. They will collectively shoot the ball 45 times, all jumpers!

Selby was the best player in this game. He is a flat out stud. I wasn't impressed with Brandon Knight. He is good but a one and done like everyone said. He may be another Kenny Boynton which isn't bad. All in all it is an all-star game and its hard to judge kids in a format like this. Remember Greg didn't look good in the game either and look at him now.

Talk about late-signing/recruiting. Kentucky is about to lose between 7-8 players from its team this year and has 2 commitments right now (Kanter and Poole). I think they are going to get Knight, Leslie, Ross, and maybe even Jones. Then they will add some JUCOs. This model of recruiting all 1 and dones isn't going to be sustainable for Cal to win a championship at Kentucky. Yes, Smith is very fat.

I realize that the selection here is not necessarily the best players in the country, but it's not fun to see Cuse get 2, Louisville get 2, Pitt get 1 and us none (again). Our best players the last 3 years have been the three McDonald's All-Americans that we recruited in Freeman, Monroe and Wright.
Sidenote: Is that coach Pingatore for one of the teams the slimeball from Hoop Dreams? I think so, or at least a relative.

And one of the five best players in the BE next year, Hollis, wasn't a Mickey D's.
Nate wasn't a Mickey D's.
Neither was Markel
Neither was Julian
Neither was Jason
However, Vernon was a Mickey D's
That game means zero on whether you turn out to be a good player. It used to mean something until politics took over 15 years ago. Now it means that you go to the right H.S., or play for the right AAU team. Obviously there are your great ones in each class. But all you have to know is that the Wear twins were named to the team to know that the selection process is largely becoming a joke

And DHall,
Gene Pingatore is nowhere near a slimeball. He's actually one of the few really decent guys left in the business. He reminds me of Dennis Seddon, the coach I played for at Roman Catholic. Both hate the AAU process. Coach Ping actually cares about his kids, which is more than I can say for 90 percent of the cats out there.

While I agree 100% that politicking plays a large role in picking the teams, you can't argue with most of the talent on these rosters (give or take a couple who I won't mention by name who shouldn't have been picked). There are some real talents here; the question is whether their college coaches will maximize that talent. One thing I would argue is that this game and the Jordan game to a lesser extent give your school additional exposure. I'm not saying a guy is going to choose Gtown because it had 3 McD AA the year before but it doesn't hurt. Obviously players choose schools based on AAU coaches/high school coaches/peddlers/etc. directing them to certain places, location, playing time, whether a team WINS, etc., but like I said, having a guy or two in the game doesn't hurt. If we are lucky enough to land Kyle or Daniel for 2012, nobody will complain when they are playing in the McD game. And so much for the "myth" of sorts that Pitt doesn't grab top talent. They already have 2 5-star recruits for 2012.

Per a Philly guy on the Nova board, Christmas is averaging less than 10 ppg and about 8 rpg. He doesn't lead his team in any major statistical category--including blocked shots, at 6'11. Tough to figure out why he's on the roster with those numbers.
Of course, Fab Melo was on the roster last year too.

Christmas has been hyped for a long time and has the physical ability you think of when considering McDonald's All Americans. His production lags his potential, but there's a reason everybody considers him a top 15 prospect in this class.
