Since the Dems did this same maneuver in 1997 (check the link), it seems that the 10-year olds have been in charge for quite some time now. In fact, they're now past drinking age. Oh boy.

Um, there was also a Armed Services hearing cancelled that featured generals who flew in all the way from Korea and Hawaii. But yeah, national security, not a big deal.

And the bark beetle problem could deforest the Rockies, for your information. "I don't understand it, so it's not important": that's conservative philosophy in a nutshell.

Zebra mussels are also an environmental hazard for the Great Lakes and other lakes in the region. They don't require a Congressional hearing.

I'm sure the bark beetle is very important to the people of Colorado, so it's good to see their elected representative taking it seriously. The hearing would have almost certainly been just Udall, so it's not like he's wasting anybody's time.

As Bando pointed out, an Armed Services committee hearing was also canceled, and a Homeland Security committee hearing was cut short. But neither of those are very important either....

If the Republicans are trying to shed their obstructionist "Party of No" image, this isn't helping.

And yes, the Dems were total morons for doing the same thing in the 90s.

John Boehner identified his party as one of Hell No, rather than a polite No. There's a difference and it has been made clear by the recent sponsored protests, the asymmetric attacks on congressional offices and relatives of congressmen, the rude tantrums on the floor (You Lie and Baby Killer come to mind) and the like.

Back in Wisconsin, Asian Carp in the Great Lakes is one of the top political concerns right now. I think it was Tip O'Neill who said that "all politics is local." It's true.

The carp problem cries out for Congressional action because there is no incentive for states to be the first to take broad action to attack the problem and to bear the burden of fixing it when other states are not taking action. I think fishermen would view it as a problem, but maybe they aren't sufficiently elite for the tea party populists.

To be clear, the carp issue does not matter to me, but I will not take the next step of saying that it does not matter and that government should only take up what matters to or benefits me.

What about the question I asked. How does a congressional hearing make a difference?

Now that we've taken care of an issue with the question...For one thing, we may never know if it would make a difference because the hearing has not taken place - a lack of action won't make a positive difference (that should be clear). However, it appears as though the intent was to take up legislation that has been identified as important in national parks/forests and elsewhere. That's not an area for state action - they are not competent to deal with it. I think legislation would make a difference, however small, given the situation but could be wrong.
