6) Michael Tate-Venson: The reason I hate players with hyphens in their names. Knees or no knees this dude was supposed to be a TOP 10 national recruit. He stunk. If he had half the game he was reported to have then Alonzo and Deke would have seen a Final Four. There was no hyphen in the name. He wanted to be known as Michael Venson but Georgetown always referred to him as Michael Tate, but somehow allowed his jersey to read "Venson". Very confusing.

The game was a afternoon game on ESPN. Bronxie was in 8th grade. Since that was a second round game, it would have been on CBS. But definitely a late afternoon game. I remember it felt like getting kicked in the stomach, a lot like it did on Thursday. Some things never change... Sunday afternoon game on CBS. Jamal Walker of Cardinal Hayes high school in the Bronx did major damage against us. Alzonzo could not punk Derek Strong and Tyrone Hill in that game. Losing Dave Edwards was huge because we had to endure the the Joey Brown era.

See how memories are....we played the 1st round game on ESPN. Texas Southern or something like that. Bronxie remembers rushing home from school to check the score to find out we killed them.

The FORWARD position (both the 3 & the 4) have caused the Hoyas a lot of pain and some missed chances at Final Fours. Off the top of my head: 1) Michael Graham: I am convinced Georgetown does not win in 1984 without him. I also believe his absence cost the 1985 title. Then in 1986 if Graham was around as a junior with Reggie and Horace, MJ, Wingate and 5th year Ralph Dalton I believe a Final Four could have been reached. Ditto in 1987 if Graham had been paired with Reggie and the Miracles. Four years of Michael Graham would have been SUBLIME. 2) Jonathan Edwards: Sort of Graham's replacement after Grady Mateen didn't pan out. Edwards brought all the physical tools as a FR and then hurt his back and was simply never the same. 3) Anthony Tucker: Talk about a forward with all the skills. Could shoot, run, rebound and play some defense. Inexplicable how he didn't find his niche with the Hoyas. 4) John Turner: Very skilled bruiser that was ALonzo's bodyguard. Ran out of school after the Rayful Edmond III fiasco. Would have been a FORCE if he stayed. A FORCE. 5) Milton Bell: Never found it as a Hoya. Great athlete that was supposed to be the small forward starter for years. 6) Michael Tate-Venson: The reason I hate players with hyphens in their names. Knees or no knees this dude was supposed to be a TOP 10 national recruit. He stunk. If he had half the game he was reported to have then Alonzo and Deke would have seen a Final Four. 7) Anthony Jones: Top 20 National recruit with a silky shooting touch. Took off for UNLV after a disappointing sophomore season. 8) Macklin: Like it or not Vern could have really helped this year's team. What's ironic is Monroe's recruitment helped Vern to leave and yet Macklin would have benefitted the most from Greg's passing. Vern's size, athleticism and finishing ability would have put this year's squad in a much better place. That's off the top of my head. JT 2 gets the rap that he quit recruiting hard but if Tate, Bell, Tucker had stayed and produced who knows? Plus guys that were highly rated and stunk like Sam Jefferson and Jonathan Edwards (injuries) hurt too. Don't forget Duane Spencer. But really it was the lack of backcourt continuity in the late 90's that marked the end of the Pops era and the Esh era as a lowpoint in recent Hoya history. Butler/Page/Sheffey/Brunner/Long was a lot of talent to pass through without ever seeing a single senior season (or NBA career).

Absolutely Harvey Thomas. Harvey had amazing potential. As good as the Center position has been for the Hoyas the forwards have been completely hit or miss. Jeff Green & Reggie were amazing, Sweetney very solid and then many more what ifs, injuries, transfers and disappointment.

Just watched the Xavier game 1990 second round loss & it is brutal. Dwayne Bryant was so overrated. He played badly like he did in most big games. End game : Georgetown is down 1 with 1:27 left and Xavier with the ball. Hoyas play hellacious defensive set Edwards almost makes steak & go and then Dikembe blocks their shot, scramble and for some reason I will never understand Xavier is given a fresh 45 second shot clock.
It was a SHOT CLOCK violation. So Edward fouls a guy with 20 seconds and he hits both and Hoyas down 3. Tillman’s off balance 3 is 3/4 of the way down before it somehow pops out of the hoop. Edwards does manage to miss two front ends of 1 & 1 within 7 seconds.
The end of the good old days. Premium players up and down the roster would not appear again until Iverson sophomore season and it was fleeting.

I long for the days of the 45 second shot clock. This nonsense now of 20 second after an offensive rebound is offensive to me.

20 years ago my friends and I could not believe that the Hoyas were only a 3 seed. We were freshman and went to the Leavy Center to watch the game. I remember my shock when Tillman's 3 missed at the buzzer and the 3 seeded Hoyas lost in the second round to #6 Xavier and their two future NBA player (Tyrone Hill and Arron Williams.) So many disappointing losses have happened since. Including that year there have been 12 NCAA tourney appearances with 5 second round and 2 first round exits. The loss to Ohio was especially tough because this team had achieved so much, but with the pressure on, we under achieved. So I'll do what I do almost every spring, have great expectations for next year. Go Hoyas. By the way, if Zo had not been whistled for a couple of ridiculous touch fouls we would have taken out UNLV in '91. It took me a bit but this was actually 30 years ago.

Davidson and FGCU are some devastating losses. 😢 I’ll never get over Davidson. Those fouls 30 ft from the basket on Hibbert haunt me. That was a really good team that could have won it all.
