I'm thinking we should consider playing zone. USF doesn't shoot great from 3. The key to stopping USF is keeping jones out of the lane. Either that or have jason play off him to try and stop penetration. Might be a decent plan if this team had shown any inkling of how to execute a zone defense. Unfortunately, attempts at zone have been abject failures and only seem to exacerbate rebounding issues, so probably not worth fooling around here.

I've never seen a team more incompedent at playing a 2-3 zone(although I watched the 82 championship game and that team wasn't much better ). Add in the fact that if there was any team James would turn into JJ Reddick against it would be us.

Just play man and sag off a little bit - especially when we have to switch on a screen. Nothing drives me more crazy then one of our bigs commits a stupid foul 25 ft from the hoop.

We've actually played matchup zone in games all year - and at times very well. From what I've seen today, there is no doubt that we should play matchup zone instead of man tomorrow from the beginning. The key will be making shots so that USF is forced to actually execute a half court zone offense - which they apparently struggle with mightily.

I would not read too much into this game. USF is not excited about playing it and they are just grinding it out. A much more spirited USF squad will be waiting for us tomorrow. If we match their intensity, it is a non-contest. Given the way that clown, Jones, acted at the Verizon Center, I would hope our guys would want to put him in his place.
I also agree with those who think playing zone is a luxury we do not have.

Though we did a great job with it in the second half against WVU though. I wouldn't mind seeing the 3-2 match, but not so much the 2-3 straight up zone.

The idea of making it a half-court game cannot be stressed enough. I hope you are right about the match-up zone, I know for a fact we cannot play a 2-3.

ZERO USF perimeter pts. zip nada ziltch.
you guys can rag our zone all you want but I am pretty sure we can deal with that. they are not getting the same team D wise that they saw back in early February. Jones will not ride the line like he did in that game. Gil? Gus? Who? christ

Something else I have noticed, atleast during all the Big East games(minus Nova) that I have watched. Ever since all the Big East reffing controversy the games seemed to be called much much looser. Our games seem to have much less fouls and seem to be more physical as a result. I think if we realize this and play like this it will be to our advantage if it carries over to the BET.

Meh, I am with NC, and others, I wouldnt read too much into this and starting playing a zone. I thought the reason that USF beat us last time was exactly because they made it a slow, halfcourt game and got to the boards. We just need to play the way we play every game. Don't be changing defensive strategy now because USF was 0-7 from 3pt range in one game.

no to the zone. it is porous, easily moved and gives up crazy lanes to the offensive glass. when the hoyas show it, i start wishing it was illegal.
can anyone explain why the hoyas go zone on out of bounds plays?

Locker Room Poster material:
With a minute to play in perhaps the biggest win in South Florida history, the star player bellowed to the Georgetown crowd: "Y'all come watch Dominique Jones play!"
When the horn sounded, Jones flexed his muscles, extolled the virtues of his school to anyone within earshot and told the school's radio crew his "heart was beating too fast" with excitement to do a postgame interview.

Whoever said we have to match their intensity, that's exactly right. We were manhandling them in the 1st half of the prior game, but came out flatter than a board in the 2nd half. Meanwhile, they came out ready to play. If we match them on energy, we're a better team. If not, they will beat us.
Jason needs to D up Jones like he did Scheyer.

We get ahead this time, I suspect we won't put it on cruise control again. And someone will give Jones a reminder why you don't shoot your mouth off during the regular season.

meh I think our zone D gets bashed unnecessarily agianst it's play early in the year. Our zone D against pitt won us that game.
I wasn't suggesting zone because of this game alone, but to limit jone's penetration which killed us last game and killed depaul in this game. It helps that they're not good shooters. Zone isn't necessarily the solution, but what is necessary is to stop jone's penetration.
Going zone out of bounds is something my high school did too. I think it discourages plays designed to score off the inbounds since the lane is more clogged and people don't ahve to chase players, but just guard their area.
