Ok several people have blamed chris for taking the ball to the hoop on a "3 on 1" break. Maybe it was just from the perspective i had with the play coming right at me rather than viewing it from the side, but if we're thinking of the same play it appeared the trailers stopped running and left chris with no option but to take it to the rim because the trailers stopped hustling after him. I blame the trailers for that play not chris. he looked back to pass but no one was close anymore.

No, Chris really should have dumped that. And when Jason got the rebound, he should have taken his time.
Chris had a mediocre game for him, but he played good D and kept us in it early. He's not going to be great every game, and that's okay.

It looked like an easy layup for Chris, that he just missed.

Chris' cross court pass to Freeman on the fast break was sweet. He knew whom to get it to, and Free nailed it. Also, that Hollis to Clark fast break was expertly done. That's freshman to sophomore, looking good.

to see austin play so well today was such a relief to me. i didn't care as much about the score as i did to austin's time on the floor. his confidence and effort made my day.
that being said, a nice win heading into this week.

It helped that Yancey Gates loitered and Donta Vaughn went completely AWOL. But Lance Stephenson can play -- just needs more time. How did he end up at Cincinnati anyway? I thought he was looking at UCLA, Kansas, St. John's or Maryland.

Agreed about the Chris fast break - he should have dumped that one off. You don't need to rush on a 3v1. Get to the middle of the court and somebody will be wide open. We tend to rush things too much on breaks when we have numbers.
That said, great win today. Very refreshing to see some good defense. Not only does it keep our opponent's scoring down, but it leads to the aforementioned fast breaks.

Finally made it back home from the game. Late arriving crowd but once they made it they were into the game. About twice as many students as I expected given the start of spring break. When you watched today's game it was abundantly clear who the real leader of this team is. If Freeman does not make first team All Big East it will be a crime. Outstanding job by the entire team on the boards against one of the best offensive rebounding teams in the country and great defensive toughness for pretty much the entire second half. The halftime lead felt like it should have been bigger but it also felt like a blowout was coming. Hollis and Vee both played very well especially on the defensive end and both had great fast break dishes. The bench appears to be rounding into form. Greg was outstanding as well - how can you argue with 19 and 15, especially when the 19 included a righty hook in the lane? I note that Vee Sanford's O.rtg was 208.7. He's most touted for his defensive prowess, but yesterday he was great on offense too. Well . . . To be clear, he only took one shot (a missed 3FG) and had an assist. Since his missed shot resulted in an offensive rebound, he isn't penalized for it (he actually got his own miss there). The fact that his % poss. was so low (3%) tells you he mostly stayed out of the way on offense.

I don't care, he was great. Yes, I realize you can say almost anything you want with statistics but my eyes told me what I needed to know, especially when he ran that fast break. His shot at the top of the key that got put back in his face? Not so much. Needs to speed up the release.

Vee does a good job of playing safe within the flow of the offense. He hasn't had a turnover in more than 40 minutes of play in the past 5 games.
He makes the defense play him and then passes. On one possession yesterday, he got into better position to make a safe entry pass to Greg instead of trying to throw it over or through the defender or passing it back out to the top of the key.
On the fast break assist, he pulled down the contested defensive rebound after it had been tapped around and then immediately turned and led the break.
For the 2nd straight game, he was called for a foul when it appeared he had cleanly blocked a shot.
GU outscored Cincinnati 9-4 in the 5 minutes Vee was in the game before garbage time. Even if he only plays 8 minutes and plays it safe, giving Freeman (and Clark) a couple of short breaks can be a valuable contribution.

I'm done with Vee.
He didn't get a steal yesterday. The magic is gone.
Seriously, the guy has a steal on 7.4% of possessions so far this year. And over 9% the last 10 games.
That may not seem like a lot, but if he played 30 minutes and kept that pace (7.4%), he'd have just under 4 steals per game!
Also, bmartin points out another great aspect -- his lack of turnovers. Both he and Austin have been fantastic holding onto the ball in the second half of the season.
If he kept his stats with more minutes (which may be a stretch), he'd be a one man correction for our turnover issues. Our opponents would become like us, and we'd become our opponents.
The caveat is that his low turnover rate comes with a low usage and assist rate, and keeping up that kind of steal rate likely takes a lot of energy. Still.

Nothing terribly substantive to add, just that yesterday was a really nice way to end what's been an up-and-down season at home.
Now it's time to capitalize. Go Hoyas.
