So I watched the game with a couple of non-Hoya friends. The first one shows up and it's about 3 minutes in and says "The Hoyas are moving like they're running drills in practice."
Second one shows up about 10 minutes later. We're down 8 or something and says "Where's the urgency? Georgetown looks like it's running drills in practice."
That sums it up quite nicely. Vee Sanford is the only Hoya who looks like he wants it and I'm starting to think he's on the bench because of it (like Jessie Sapp was last year). We've led for 45 seconds of the last 80 minutes at home and nobody on the team seems to mind.

We often look like we are just going through the motions when we are out there....evidenced by lots of lazy perimeter passes and a robotic looking offense. I agree that Vee was looking alive out there but I lose you with the rest of your post. Why do you think Jessie was on the bench last year?
In my mind, Jessie started pressing last year when his shot stopped falling and at some point decided he needed to "get his" as his time was running out. This had a negative impact on the team and he was benched. That and he was embattled in a power struggle with Chris for who would run the point.

Yeah, I don't know about the Sapp comparison, but everything else you said is spot on. Why does it seem like III is unable to light a fire under the team? I love III. I am not pulling a Bronx move and saying he's terrible at anything or is leading us into a new dark age. But I do think that he has a major flaw in that he doesn't seem to inspire or rally our team when it comes out looking lazy.

All I'm saying with the Sapp comment is that a guy playing with heart and effort is so secondary to "running our stuff" it's almost absurd at this point.
I'm sure Vee is not very good at soullessly going through his options in our offensive sets. I'm also quite sure when he's out there, he wants the g** d*** basketball and is a competitor.
We need guys who compete. I actually don't care why Sapp was benched because the minute he was, our fire died. I see the same thing with Vee. That kid wants to play 94 feet, offense and defense. I think Greg does too. Everyone else? Forget it. And that running our "pretty" offense is so damn important that it trumps everything else including defense and effort is ridiculous.
I'd rather be 15-12 and on the bubble with a team that leaves it all on the floor.

i agree, where extreamly passive on both sides of the ball. JT 3 seems like a passive coach and his players respond to him. Are whole identiy is passive. Lazy passes, rebounding, not pressing even when losing, not getting lose balls.

It comes with the III territory. "Never get too high, never get too low." I understand the thinking behind that, but its clear that he needs to crack some skulls at least once and give the team the thought that they have a coach who will run them until they puke when their effort isn't there. It's about recognizing that as a coach, some of your teams will need different things and that you have to provide it.

No you wouldn't. Come on. Also, we have left it all on the floor, but we haven't figured out how to do it everytime out or to sustain that level of effort.
Also, I love Jessie Sapp, but he was brutal in the second half of the season last year. It was the worst he ever played in a Hoya uniform. III did the right thing.

What is there to "figure out" about showing up prepared and playing hard for 40 minutes? Do we need to get out the clipboard and draw up diving for loose balls or fouling someone hard to prevent an easy basket? And yes I would trade wins for effort. This entire team returns next year (maybe not Greg but at least everyone else). I'd want a fighting #9 seed over a coasting #5 seed any day. Because the fighting team will fight next year and improve. The coasters? They'll continue to coast. And if Greg jumps to the NBA, this team will have to earn wins the hard way and I don't see how they do that right now.

I'd rather be 15-12 and on the bubble. That explains your affinity for the Craig Esherick era.

Yeah, there's no reason to think that the members of this team might improve in the off season. I can't think of a single player that has shown the ability to improve from one season to the next. C'mon Giga. You're better than that Bronxhoya style troll hyperbole.

C'mon Giga. You're better than that Bronxhoya style troll hyperbole. We're not talking about improvement. That's the point. We shot 44% from three yesterday and 51% from the floor and lost by 14 points at home. And we did it by not rebounding the basketball and not playing good defense. Now we're not a terrible rebounding team, just pretty average. And ND is not a great offensive rebounding team either, just pretty good. Oh and they didn't have their starting center. So how'd it happen? We got out-worked. That's how. And this team has spent the first half deciding whether or not to play defense and rebound for the entire month of February (even our wins, like Louisville). We haven't had a halftime lead in three weeks. This isn't about improving, it's about going all out from the tip. That's certainly what they have to do tomorrow.

Effort comes and goes with this team. We had it for the Duke and Nova home games. It's like a rollercoaster. We don't know what to expect. I still believe we can beat any team, but we can lose to any team. That's not good enough to win the BET or NCAA where the team will need to put four and six good games together. As for next year, I think Lubick will provide the toughness down low that we have been missing all this time. That's unless JT3 has him guarding someone 37 feet away...

this team just doesn't seem to understand that they can't half ass it and win games in this league. the bigs were completely outplayed by a guy averaging 4pts and 4reb per game. wright and monroe have to step up and take over the game when austin ins't 100% and both played like crap. beyond frustrating.

no bench, equals job security. would like to see Vee get some meaningful minutes, hate to speculate because he could be all hype too.
