The hedging isn't the issue. I mean, except when there's no follow-through. The defense we run requires a lot of effort. While it's not hyper-aggressive in trapping, it requires everyone to move, and move quickly because it requires a lot of motion. On a day when no one seems to want to play defense, it looks awful. That's what happened today. It's also why we tried the zone again despite the obvious drawbacks, I think. +1 It also doesn't work when you are only playing 4 healthy players.

agree that hedging cannot work when played with only 4 healthy bodies but i wonder whether the percentages are ever there for us. i'd love to see stats regarding turnovers forced, field goal percentage defense vs. fouls for bigs and easy baskets surrendered

It also results in our bigs being out of position for rebounds.

File this one among the laundry list of consistently ineffective tactics we use like:
Giving CW the green light to drive into traffic to get swatted 2-3 times a game Running the inbounds play where CW gets the ball underneath the hoop and gets swatted Refusing to pound the ball into Monroe until we are desparate JV posting up while Monroe stands at the 3 point line Having Benimon attempt to make entry passes to the post (which is nearly impossible since his defender sags in since JB has a weak jumper)

It still works a lot and does accomplish our goal most of the time (keeping the player from driving or shooting off the pick). I'm pretty sure CW has the green light to drive and dish or drive and make a basket, not drive and get swatted, but who knows I'm not in the huddle. The inbounds play to CW has shown to be effective and I am fairly certain that he converts that much more often then he gets swatted. Would you rather have JV outside where he can't bang, rebound or do what his skills are? Greg's skill set enables him to be out to the 3-pt line and it would not be using Greg to his fullest abilities if we just sat him on the low block all day. Did you not see Greg's drives against Cuse? At least Benimon is attempting to make entry passes, once he gets his jump shot down it will be much more effective. Would you rather just have him take that shot and miss 80% of the time or try to get the ball inside to Greg and fail 30% of the time? Just confused on how all of these things are necessarily the wrong choice and consistently ineffective?

CW turns the ball over driving to the hoop more than any point guard i can remember seeing. there is a reason is rarely draws a foul - because he is out of control and is looking for bail out calls. re: the inbounds play - i guess we see it differently. i see a lot more TO's and blocked shots resulting from that than made baskets. conceptually, sending your smallest player directly underneath the basket doesnt seem like an ideal strategy. re: vaughn - what i am saying that if you are going into a single post set, greg should be the one posting up, especially when he is going against someone that is 6-7. greg has a nice handle for a big but i can remember 2 successful drives from the three point line all year. re: benimon, my point is that he shouldn't be the guy being asked to make that pass, given his skill set and his inability to make defenders come out on him.

CW's problem is that he is just too short, if he only had another inch or two it would be much better. If we were having a single post set with Greg inside and Julian outside (where Greg usually is). Greg would be double-teamed even without the ball. There is no reason why any defender would ever play up on Vaughn: he can't make them pay from deep, he can't drive past them, and he is not the best passer as a big man. I would much rather have Greg out there where he can drive, pass, shoot (although he also has to work on his deeper shots) and keep the defenders honest. On Greg's drives, I agree that it isn't very often that we see him drive from 3pt land all the way to the hoop but we do see him drive to get into post position from the 3pt line w/ the ball or pass (his truly elite skill). But yes Greg should be posting up more, but I don't cringe when I see him at the 3 pt line like I do when Julian goes out there. With Jerelle, I doubt that coach is telling HIM to feed the post every time he gets the ball. Our offense though does require every player to at least LOOK for the option of feeding the inside (if only to keep the defense honest). Jerelle also takes that shot sometimes (which he should do with the amount that they sag off him) but I'm sure that Coach does not want him to shoot that more then once or twice in the game. It is just what our offense requires, for each of our players to be a triple threat, and Jerelle does pretty well for his first year in the system. (Remember Freeman trying to feed Roy his freshman year?)

Scottie Reynolds and Jay Wright disagree with you that out of control drives and bail out calls are ineffective.

I didn't want to start a thread concerning this topic and decided to put it here (sorry if it's been posted else where) .. This isn't about Stokes urinating in public mind you - smh .. it's about MOOSE ... Greg is catching heat from the NOVA fans ... but I kind of understand where they're coming from .. thoughts : "Go to und.com and call up the ND-Georgetown highlights. Go to the 1:20 mark. Monroe basically tries to tackle Carlton Scott with a forearm shiver. League office needs to get involved." www.und.com/

Lame.
First, you can't tackle someone with a forearm shiver.
Second, review the entire game tape - Scott gave as good as he got while hacking Monroe on defense in the lane.
Third, if the league office should investigate anything it was Benimon's elbow that sent Clark to the bench to get stitches in his lip.

I can't see the highlights at work, but if it's the Monroe takedown on Scott with about a minute left in the game on the baseline under our basket, it was pretty bush league. It happened right in front of us, and I was amazed a foul wasn't called at the very least. I was shocked that Monroe did it - mostly because it was the first visible evidence that he was frustrated by the day's events and actually gave a crap that the team was losing. I don't think it warrants any suspension or action from the league, but it wasn't Greg's finest moment, let's put it that way. That guy Scott killed us all day, too. Where in the world did he come from? That ND team without Gody is pretty damn good. What does Brey do if Gody's ready to come back?
