I read the piece on JYD and glanced at his site.
I'm afraid it just makes AI look sad by comparison.

I know I've actually defended AI before when people on here have bashed him, but actually, the more I read, the more I wonder why Hoya fans still like to claim this guy as one of our own. Now I could live with it if he just made some mistakes in his life. But my biggest problem is why he has never given anything back to this school. All our other big name alums have been present in one way or another in the last few years. Jerry Rice, who had no connection, became a part of our Midnight Madness. Jeff has brought NBA stars to McDonough, so people have seen Kevin Durant and Michael Beasley on campus. But never AI. He's never at a game. He's never at a Midnight Madness. Never anywhere. JTII gave him the opportunity of a lifetime, and AI ran with it as far as anyone could have. But I find it pretty appalling that he's never acknowledged the school that let JTII take that chance on him. So why do we still care about AI? Isn't responding to a thread about the tragedies in AI's life with "why do we still care about AI?" essentially saying "AI is just a basketball player to me and not a human being?" Pretty messed up if you ask me. Let's get some perspective here: he got brought in to a school where you were a student, and he was a "student" too (ha ha). He jumped around to make you happy while you got ready for grad school and Wall Street. The plan worked for you, but not so much for him because all anyone cared about was him entertaining them. And, now that he's done entertaining you, there's no need to care for him anymore. The guy's kid is sick, he's an alcoholic, his wife is divorcing him...and, he's not entertaining you any more, so screw'em. Classy, dude.

One of this site's most prolific ranters recently, within the past week or so, reminded us that the members of our CURRENT TEAM "aren't real students." If that's how folks feel about guys like Greg and Austin, you can only imagine the sentiment toward AI, Victor Page, and Patrick Ewing. It's hard to fathom how indignant Hoyas can get when outsiders repeat the claims that Patrick can't read or that Jeff Green was too stupid for Gary Williams to get into UMd ... and yet the same people have no trouble heaping abuse on Allen Iverson. To be honest, I wish more righteous indignation were heaped upon our legacy admits and the scores of others admitted solely for "development" purposes, cough. You know, people who bring absolutely nothing to the campus community but get to milk the prestige of a Georgetown degree for all its worth.

As an aside, there's nothing wrong with being indignant about both legacy admits AND academically unqualified athletes being used for the entertainment of the wealthy masses of future Wall Streeters and then thrown away when they (a) fail to do so and/or (b) fail to behave in their post-"academic" lives like the wealthy future Wall Streeters that they were imported to entertain.

As an aside, there's nothing wrong with being indignant about both legacy admits AND academically unqualified athletes being used for the entertainment of the wealthy masses of future Wall Streeters. I'm not indignant about either. It's all part of the business of running a school. And, In fact, in light of the guys that we've gotten on the sports side, I couldn't be prouder of how our program has been run. Let's say we never had guys like Jeff and Deke and JYD and Alonzo. Who'd have missed out more? The University or the guys themselves? Deke, Jeff, JYD and Zo would have probably ended up about where they are and yet you get to claim a guy like Dikembe as one of your own who gives countless dollars and hours to the betterment of his homeland and Jeff who, while doesn't have to, chooses to come back and finish his degree and isn't one of your prototypical top 5 draft guys. Alonzo with his programs and center for kids in Miami and JYD with his countless endeavors. And we have Jon Wallace who got early admission to GTown Law. We don't have a carload of athletes getting busted for DWI's and weed possession or for punching women or stealing laptops. Come the hell on! AI is that bad? We should write off AI because he has some issues? No one else other than me on this board has made some choices and done some things that they're not proud of? I own up to my mistakes but they're also not put on newswires or television or the internet. Allen Iverson is a Hoya for life. I could not care any less what anyone else says. I hope the University and the program reaches out to the guy as he's clearly in a bad way right now. And, not for nothing, he's not been called an alcoholic or a degenerate gambler by anyone and taking Steven A. Smith's word as bond for anything is ridiculous. Even if he's dead-on, it's all the more reason for us to be behind AI. In fact, I wish the University and the program would step up more in cases where maybe there could be a positive outcome by doing so. Why don't we reach out to guys like Victor Page? I wish we would. It's supposed to be a Jesuit institution no? I view these guys as Hoyas for life and I'd hope that everyone else does too. I'm proud as hell that Jeff wants his degree. I'm ecstatic that Jerome Williams' best memory of his time at Georgetown is his graduation day. I'm thankful that Big John had the deflated basketball asking what's next. I hope all of these kids remember their time fondly on the Hilltop as I do and enjoy and feel thankful for being a part of the University well past the time that they leave. I hope that they feel like a part of the school left with them when they left like I do. And I hope that Georgetown welcomes them and encourages them if they need it. Otherwise, drop the basketball program and don't foster good relaltionships with alumni that contribute. You can't whine about your lack of facilities and not have legacies and recruit guys that you think will help the program and still make grades. You don't get to have it both ways. With regard to the folks that I've known for years that are legacies, I'm happy to say that each that I've known (save one) have worked harder in both their time in school and showing their appreciation as alumni. I think that says a whole helluva lot about where we were ALL lucky enough to attend regardless of our path in getting there. We're all lucky to have gone (or are going) to Georgetown regardless of how we got there. Remember that. Whenever I run into someone who goes or went or knows someone who went to our beloved school, I always enjoy talking about it. I think we can probably all agree on that. If someone says to me, "Yeah, but Allen Iverson wasn't there for the school work" I just say, "Maybe not, but I KNOW he went to class because I'd see him at 8:40 on Monday and Wednesday on my way past Walsh." I know he did what he had to and moved on to the NBA so he could care for his family. It was probably the best 50-60 grand the University ever spent in terms of bringing Georgetown back to relevance. I find it ironic that we have many here that like to talk about how "classy" Georgetown folks are in relation to other folks and yet jump on AI when he's having problems. If the irony is lost on you, please don't tell anyone you went to the school that I'm proud to say that I attended.
