turnovers and rebounding...turnovers and rebounding
be smart with the ball, make quick decisions against the zone and for gods sake take off the skirts and frigging rebound.

We've had great success attacking the zone in the past from the baseline, but have gone away from it the last few games. Monroe needsto hold on to the ball, of his six turnovers in the last game i believe 5 of them led to ten quick points with eight coming after we went up 14-2.

Rebounding is tough for this team when your 6 11 center spends 75% of his time outside the 3 point line.

Can't overstate the importance of this game....Besides the games to win the BE regular season championships, this is the most important regular season game of the JT3 era

As always with Syracuse, the key to beating the zone is getting the ball into the middle, either with a pass or with a quick dribble penetration, then making smart, fast decisions to shoot, dump it to the baseline, or kick it out for a 3. We have to be quick and not allow the zone time to shift. We can also run when available, Syracuse is not a good transition D team. Shoot well and play smart, let's get the revenge that ESPN is hyping.

Just win.
This isn't a 'must win' game. The games after this one will probably tell us more about how this team has grown and at this point considering Pitt's schedule its unlikely we get a double bye.
However, this is Cuse. From attempting to poach Jeff Green, to the pathetic career of Devendorf to the current team which is made up of a bunch of misfits like 'can't hit a ft for their life' AO and Jackson, and the unjustifiably pugnacious scrub like Rautins they need to be beaten. And not just by a couple points so they can cry about the refs (though if we have to win on a last minute layup by Greg like the Temple game I'll take it too).

Yeah I do NOT want to spend the next 11 monthes hearing how they swept us, how they "own" us, etc. A solid beatdown would make life easier up here.

I'm pretty confident that we'll beat Syracuse at home. My worries are entirely after this game. That is, can we win consistently, and can we win consistently on the road.

no getting the ball to the middle is not the key. Monroe can't pass out of the middle of the zone his reactions and reads are too slow for some unexplainable reason. attack from the baseline below the basket to monroe. will move the zone down and allow for easier penetration and short little jump shots. it where most zones are vulnerable it just requires excellent execution to make the first pass.

Can't overstate the importance of this game....Besides the games to win the BE regular season championships, this is the most important regular season game of the JT3 era This is just a ridiculous statement. The change in our standing for purposes of the NCAA tournament would barely move the needle as a result of this game. There are all kinds of pride and emotional reasons to want to win, but acting like the entire season hangs in the balance is just ridiculous. Honestly I'd say the Pitt game earlier in the year in the midst of our brutal stretch was more important, the Nova game late last season was more important (not important enough unfortunately), the white out game at Freedom Hall in 2008 was more important, etc.

For us, this is one of those years. Thursday's game will tell us all we need to know about the direction of this team over the next month. Yes, a win does not guarantee us anything as this season has shown, but a loss (especially an ugly one) to a) our biggest rival b) at home c) at this stage of the season and d) coming of the worse loss in years, certainly shows that we are not the type of team that can win it all this year. This is why in my eyes, this game is the biggest I can remember.

... d) coming off the worse loss in years, certainly shows that we are not the type of team that can win it all this year. This is why in my eyes, this game is the biggest I can remember. If you factor out the how fresh in our memories this loss is, and consider the multiple variables that must go into comparing/contrasting bad losses, while this one certainly hurts, is it really the worst loss in years? Like many others on the board, I was very disappointed by this loss, but it has yet to be determined what it will mean in the grand scheme of this season, let alone the past few. If we look back over the JT III era, or even the last three seasons (this one and the prior two), I'd be curious to hear how others rank this loss. Sorry to focus on only one subset of your over all point, but for whatever reason, I couldn't get past this one statement... LET'S GO HOYAS!!! SQUASH SYRACUSE!

I enjoy seeing the Hoyas beat Syracuse and whinning Mr. McGoo as much as anyone, but this is not a do or die game. Unless the Hoyas lose the rest of their games and are one and done in the BET, the Hoyas are NCAA bound and the only question is seeding. The question for me is how does the team play against a big athletic front line that plays zone. The only game where the Hoyas did not have an answer was the Syracuse game. After Syracuse extended its zone defense to counter the Hoyas 14-0 run, the Hoyas were pretty much spanked the rest of the way. In the Nova game after getting slapped in 1st half the Hoyas came back to make the game close. The key to winning NCAA is getting the right matchup unless you are a team stacked like Kentucky. These Hoyas have shown that they can win against (1) fast tempo team(Washington),(2) high accuracy 3pt shooting team(Butler),(3) big frontline with pressing man-to-man defense, with high accuracy 3pt shooting(Duke), and (4) pressing guard oriented offense/defense with high 3pt accuracy(Villanova). What they have not shown to this point is can they beat a team with a big athletic frontline that plays a zone defense the majority of the game with decent 3pt shooting. To that end, I hope Cuse plays the way they played earlier in their wins over UNC and Texas. If the Hoyas can beat that team, or play that team neck n neck then the rest of the season will be gravy and we get ready for BET and NCAA by giving Sims and Sandford more PT the rest of the way. Some have said that the Cuse zone defense has been JT3's kryptonite. i would say yes only when Mr McGoo has the talent like this year to run it. This game could exorcise those demons for this team and JT3. Let the fun begin.

I do not like to put so much emphasis on one game. For one, there will always be teams every year that are a bad match-up. So if SU by chance does beat us, I do not think this means we cannot do major damage in the NCAAs or we are now not a Top Tier team. That is determined more by the games that follow.
As for what we need to do, I am no coach, not a great Xs and Os guy, but I know one thing - I do not want to see any of our backdoor cuts or moves to the basket get cleanly blocked like the first time around. I can remember several instances where the backdoor worked but it was erased by the SU frontcourt. Finish strong around the rim! Draw the foul if nothing else, draw contact and finish.

This is a tough, tough match-up for us. Our outside shooting is (outside of Freeman) is inconsistent, Greg, while a devastating passer, cannot reliably enough hit the jumper from the elbow to keep the zone from sagging (and he's a little weak holding the ball and susceptible to getting stripped in the middle), and when Vaughn/Benimon get the ball on the low block with an opening if we've coaxed a defender off the baseline, they tend not be decisive enough with the ball to make the defense pay.
And unfortunately Syracuse knows from the last game that they can stay in their zone even if we make them pay early from outside.
We need to get out in transition, hit 3s, and Greg needs to be decisive from the elbows.

That is how you beat it. That is what ND did with Harangody and it worked very well. They didnt win the game, but that's because ND has yet to play defense this season. They did, however, score at will down on the blocks against Syracuse. When they started jacking up 3s, they had no chance.
