Ironically, it wasn't the ad that many people have listed as their favorite Super Bowl ad however. In fact, that ad, along with the Bette White ad and the Tebow Focus on the Family ad were among the least viewed -- not really surprising, given the time slot. blog.nielsen.com/nielsenwire/media_entertainment/doritos-super-bowl-spot-was-the-most-watched-ad-of-all-time/That breakdown really does illustrate tendencies. I guess people tend to arrive late -- after kickoff -- and then leave when the game "is over." There was a major drop off after Porter's interception return. I just wonder if they will be able to use this info to charge more for certain time spots or whether it is officially "random," and they charge the same for all spots of the same duration.

What was with that tebow ad any way? Why did he tackle his mom? The add didn't make any sense and didn't make it clear what it was an add for. And it made tebow look like even more of a sissy.

Yeah, I didn't think much of the ad from an advertising standpoint. But whether intentionally or not, they probably got as much 'bang for their buck' as anyone. They were a topic of discussion in many venues for nearly 2 weeks. But as for the ad itself, it was very, very tame. I would like to extend a cumulative F**K Off to all the critics who lambasted CBS and Focus on the Family leading up to the Super Bowl though. They sure came out loooking like idiots. One of the local guys here made a good point though. It would have been a natural to have his mom pop back up with eye black with a Bible verse after the tackle. In any case, I think the ad itself was pretty much of a "failure" from the marketing success perspective. But the weeks of discussion leading up certainly go their name out there, so I guess they did get their 'money's worth' in a roundabout sort of way.

There was an article a week or so ago that was great. I'm too lazy to find it, but it was on si.com. Basically, it just said a big caution to Tebow. Not that stating your opinion is a bad thing, but that tying yourself in people's mind to an organization can really backfire. Do you agree with everything they do? Are you implicitly endorsing them?

SF, I totally agree in principle, but I think that is the key here. Tebow isn't and to my knowledge has no aspirations to ever be a politician. In that regard, tying yourself to such a poarizing issue is political suicide. In his case, I don't think he cares about that, since to him this is a very important issue that he feels deeply about. My views on abortion differ from that of the traditional Christian to a degree. But I can understand those who have such views. And in his case, I can understand that feeling being even greater. Let's face it. All of us as people could have been aborter. But as someone for whom it was a strong considerataion, I would understand the feelings of "what if" being all that much greater. Still, I wouldn't want to start my professional career with such a controversial beginning.
9797, what in the hell are you talking about? Focus on the Family is a very charitable organization that does a lot of good worldwide. I understand conflicting views on certain issues, but to call them "despicable" is quite extreme. Why do you have such a view?

You know, it's kind of funny. NOW was very outspoken in their opposition to the ad, well before they had even seen it. They were critical of any '"pro-life" position or message. But after the ad, I think they realized how silly such a position would be. So then they turned their objection to the angle that the ad promoted violence against women. In my opinion, that is an equally silly position. But I guess they got their message across. A friend of mine just last night told me that most of the feeds of the ad online have edited out the tackle. Response to such objections is the only reason I know of that they would edit the ad in such a way.

I just didn't get it. I have nothign against the pro-life stance, I don'tt hink it promoted violence against women, but it just didn't make any sense to me. It wasn't funny.

I agree sincebirth. I think if it hadn't had the hype leading up, then none of us would have any idea what the heck the ad was about. I'm not sure whether that works in their favor or not. On one hand, the press that they got for two weeks got their name out there better than any 30 second spot could. On the other hand, for those that did pay attention to the ad, there might have been a stronger curiosity effect by not really knowing what the point was and maybe there would have been additional hits on their site. I don't know which was a stronger effect.

It's not just political suicide, it's about personal integrity. It's a caution for Tebow himself, because you can kick yourself for feeling tied to a group of people you have no control over.
The only thing that annoys me about Tebow on this was his commentary about this being him not preaching. It's preaching; which is fine. But it is still preaching.

That doritos commercial, like all of them this year was terrible. Especially the Audi green police ad that is sadly where our country is really heading

Especially the Audi green police ad that is sadly where our country is really heading Actually, even though it wasn't anything tremendously novel or dynamic, I actually liked the "don't touch my momma and don't touch my doritos" ad. Also, it was really loud where I was during the "shock collar" commercial, but everyone seems to be talking about it. Lastly, even though it was the "most viewed" ad, the people I have talked to have little memory ... (pausing for incoming RDF Cheech and Chong joke) ... of the Doritos ad featuring the guys in the gym.
