We did a horrible job of rebounding tonight. It scares me because against a good team like Syracuse we can't give them extra chances to score

We blew a number of rebounds where our guys would have the ball then fumble it away, but the numbers will also be deceiving because Providence got a bunch of offensive boards simply because the shots were missed so badly that there is no way our guys could be in position to grab them.

Although this is true, many times we just didn't box out. Is anyone else really annoyed when Monroe/Vaughn flies out to defend a 3-point shot instead of staying inside and boxing out? There were definitely a few times where they ran out (when a guard was doing so as well) and that left too many white jerseys in the paint to get an offensive rebound.

I don't put much stock in tonight's game regarding rebounding. Half of Providence's "rebounds" came on things that don't even truly resemble shots. I will get to tell the tale of a team I saw put up 4 "shot-like substances" and get a 35-second violation though.
Survive Rutgers and let's see us actually play 'Cuse and get a first hand look at whether we can in fact keep them off the offensive boards.

We did a bad job rebounding. We do better we win this game going away. Sure their terrible shots didn't help, but we still should've done soooooo much better. Gotta shore it up.

A lot of their offensive rebounds were on strange bounces from bad shots, but we can do better boxing out and holding onto the ball.

Do we need to bring back Paschal Fleury? We could use the size. Although what Chris doesn't have in size, he makes up for with heart! Saw him battling under the boards several times tonight while our 3 and 5 bolted up the floor after challenging 3 balls.

Although I agree we could do better, I think you need to give the guys a pass tonight. PC's shooting % is bad and this is how they make their living. Offensive rebouding is really the only strength on their team. I do not think we actually gave up more than the usual amount that they get, so for this game only, I think we can call it a by-product of PC's shooting. Now if we see something like this with RU . . .

As long as the team doesn't give itself a pass i'm fine. We can give them a pass, but they cannot. They have to work on it.

Love how Jay Bilas just pointed out our latest flaw - rebounding. Tough love from those ESPN guys. But yeah, this team does need to shore things up - it doesn't have to be a weakness.

PC was the worst shooting team I have seen us play this year. As a result, seemed liked there was an inordinate number of 10-15 ft rebounds (and airballs!). Boxing-out does only does so much for you when that happens. That being said, I was also disconcerted to see JV with ZERO rebounds with 10 mins to go in the second half.

Quite frankly, I don't recall that rebounding has ever been one of JTIII's priorities. It has been his one glaring fault as a coach.
I'm not a quant, so feel free to show me wrong.

We're not as bad of a rebounding team as you would think from just this game, but I will agree with you alf that it's never been JTIII's strong point.

Way too many balls that we have our hands on but either get ripped away from us or don't hang onto. Need to be more ferocious with the leather(or whatever polymer the balls are made from these days!).

I just got back from the game, I was sitting 6 rows from the floor and I can certainly attest to our rebounding problem.. Even My fiance who knows nothing about besketball kept saying, "why dont they ever rebound the ball"??!!
I have to admit it seemed like the ball just bounced the wrong way or we were a half step slow sooo many times, but I cant say it was a total lack of effort thing..
Another poster elluded to the fact that the firars cant shoot and that is true, there were some weird bounces off the rim..
I woudlnt be tooo concerned but it was clearly a potential major issue if we lost..

Although I agree we could do better, I think you need to give the guys a pass tonight. The problem is that this wasn't a one-time thing - we've been rebounding poorly for a while now. Nobody but Greg is doing anything on the boards. Vaughn was rebounding well early in the season, but has been awful on the defensive boards lately, and Benimon, despite the rep he has somehow acquired, isn't actually a good rebounder.

yeah i was gonna start a thread about this.
we are doing horrible on the offensive boards. thats statistically as well as what i see subjectively from the few games i have watched. there are multiple third and even fourth opportunities in these games. giving up 18 OR is way too much, double what it should be.
i feel like the guys are looking up at the ball as opposed to sticking their butts out. if they would just get low and stick their butts into the other guys i think that would help a lot as they would jump quicker and higher while the other guy basically cannot jump. can it be from our 6 man rotation. rebounding is tiring.

I feel like SF has talked about this? Haven't turnovers and surrendering offensive rebounds been Hoya liabilities throughout the JTIII era?

Providence was pushing off a lot too and not getting called for it. It hasn't been a problem most of the year. From time to time, but it hasn't been a consistent problem.

Providence was pushing off a lot too and not getting called for it. It hasn't been a problem most of the year. From time to time, but it hasn't been a consistent problem. We're mediocre at best at defense rebounding--prior to tonight, we had allowed an OREB% of 31.0%, which is above average, but only 101st overall. We're awful at offensive rebounding--we have an OREB% of 31.2%. You can say that our rebounding isn't killing us, but it certainly isn't doing us any favors.
