I agree, this was the worst I've seen student turnout, and it is surprising since Rutgers was a better showing. Call me old-fashioned, or maybe just old, but 7pm on Wednesday when you are in college isnt as big a deal as noon on Saturday (Rutgers), right? So, what am I missing?

Rockaway- +1,000. Spot On.
The disappointing part was that this was a mental loss. I'd feel better if we were in a dogfight all the way, but if you're claiming to be what we are (a Top-10 team and a contender) you can't blow 13 point leads at home. Practice won't fix what happened tonight.

Part of the problem was we were playing USF, our guys and our fans just didn't care. They saw the name on the jersey and that 4 wins in 5 games were not against us, so it is like they don't count. That is how I saw the team approach the game, especially CW. You could just see it after an "easy" 1st half they all were ready to coast.
I also completely agree with a few of you pointing out JV's minutes being over-managed. JV is still lightyears ahead of Benimon, they should not be splitting the 40 minutes. JV could have continued the low block assault that Greg was using toinght.

I dont have problems with Benimom playing signifcant minutes, but if he does, he simply has to be able to shoot the ball every once in a while. We watched him at the game and USF defenders werent with 5 feet of him. It just cant happen.

" Jones went 6 of 9 in the second half, played 39 of 40 minutes, and finished with eight rebounds and four assists. With 1:05 to play and his team leading by eight points and shooting free throws, Jones walked to the crowd and twice bellowed: "Y'all come watch Dominique Jones play!"" sports.espn.go.com/ncb/recap?gameId=300350046

Agree re: the students. Really pathetic. The "suit" sections showed up better. And if any students are reading this, let me tell you, getting your a$$ to the Booth when you're working is much tougher than when you're cruising around in jammies until 11am or pondering missing your 6:50pm class. Get your Sh!^ together next time. On the other hand, maybe everybody watched LOST last night and entered their own time warp ... I felt like it was 2005 out there tonight ....

in all honesty, this is the biggest win USF and Domnique Jones has ever had. They can talk all they want, as far as I am concerned. The price you pay, I suppose.

1. Inattention to defense (Clark) This is a joke, right? Jason shadowed him the whole night and did a really solid job. He got a bunch of points in the 2nd half (including on some wild shots that went down and a bunch of free throws). Suggesting that one of the problems tonight was an "inattention to defense" by Clark is bizarre. Agree with your other points.

I didn't want to post when I was angry, so I waited to calm down.
I honestly don't have words. Jones is a great, great player. But to be honest, we're way better than that team. We played as if we were going to win simply by having "Georgetown" across our chests. We're a very good team. But we're not THAT good. We played arrogant and by the time we realized that we were in a game, it was too late. Jones had awakened and taken over.
Alot of bickering on the board tonight. It's understandable because this is as bad a loss as you can get. Great teams just simply don't lose this kind of game. That's the scary part.
Let's move on. Big game on Saturday

We are not a great team. We just aren't. We have too many flaws at this point in the season and definitely aren't consistent enough to be considered a great team. This shouldn't be a surprsie to anyone, we haven't done anything to be considered a great team. That being said, the season isn't over yet. There is a long way to go and we can still become a great team. We can also still become a very bad team, and its not to late to repeat last year either.
Nice start to February guys, great start.

Suggesting that one of the problems tonight was an "inattention to defense" by Clark is bizarre. Agree with your other points. I second this. I was watching Clark on every possession, and he was working his a$$ off on defense chasing Jones around. Jones is a really, really difficult matchup and Clark wasn't as effective as we'd like - but I'm not sure who would be right now on this guy. In any case, saying that Clark wasn't paying attention on defense is completely wrong.

my earlier post was wrong...benimon wasn't a non-factor on offense, he was actually a minus one (-1). his lane violation took a FT away from monroe. i don't want to pick on the guy, but 19 empty minutes with 3 TOs and taking away a FT is a killer...
austin was hitting his shots (4-4 from 3) and monroe had a great offensive night, yet we still fall apart like that in the 2nd? troubling...

I'm a big Benimon fan but even I was surprised at how much time he got tonight. When he was in the game, it was basically 4 on 5 when we were on offense.
I still think this team will be dangerous in March, but this game really underscores the depth issue. If Monroe stays in that game, I think we eek it out. Not sure why we weren't going to him more earlier in the second half. I really wish Henry had developed into a competent backup this season, but he hasn't, so this is where we are. As JT3 said after the Duke game, this team can beat anybody, and can lose to anybody on the schedule from here on out. Smart man.

Best and then worst game of the season in a four day span. You know what? Probably not surprising.
I favor the "everything's just a data point" school of thought...but it seems to me like the Good Hoyas and Bad Hoyas are in a battle for control.
If you take the season as a whole, you find plenty of evidence for either side winning the battle:
Long offensive droughts and listless play characterize the Temple, ODU, Syracuse, USF, and 1st half of Villanova and Connecticut games.
Inspired, attacking basketball that identifies and exploits advantages shows up in wins over Butler, Washington, Pittsburgh, Duke, and 2nd half of Villanova and Connecticut.
Nothing is regressing to the mean (whatever that means), and thus for me it's hard to figure out what to think of this team. Which, strangely, was ranked #7 in the country on Monday, and not really by accident IMO.
Year ago today we ended that awful 5 game losing streak by beating Rutgers at home. I think by that point everyone kind of knew what was up. Who really knows right now? They're too hard to figure out.
Maybe it's not random--have to think the way the roster is built promotes the highs and lows. So if it's a rollercoaster, fine. Bring me a safety belt for my seat and some fried dough.
Much to my dismay, Greg fouled the guy. More depressing, he made no effort to block out. The free throws I'll get over...try to figure out which of the Gods I messed up with to get snow and bricks today. Least you decide your fate, better or worse, for yourself at the line. That the biggest play of the game was in Wally Rutecki's hands? There's your reverse jam to the face.

yes, confused why Greg was so passive on offense the second half. I can understand defense b/c of fouls, but there were plenty possessions where he hung out on the wing, or when he did get the ball near the basket he would pass the rock rather than draw fthrows (he finally did towards the end of the game). He also had several looks further out where he looked real indicisive (part of me wants him to take those shots/part of me worries everytime he shoots from there - bottom line he needs to improve his range or drive w/out dribbling off the foot) Meanwhile, Benimon wasnt attempting shots, Chris was distributing to Julian who wouldnt take the shot or USF guys would be able to stay with his moves, and Clark must have been fairly exhausted from guarding Jones and couldnt get threes to fall (which other than transition o is how he gets a bulk of his pts). Yes, we had mental errors and missed ft, but both Austin and Greg proved they could be effective and werent nearly aggressive enough for me throughout the second half.
And I thought Clark did a decent job on Jones - I remember JTIII subbing him out for some reason and on the next play Dominique look relieved and took it right down the middle for a layup and an and 1 (maybe freeman/wright was on him?).

USF is a really good team. I think that's whats lost in all this. Everyone is looking at USF from previous years but they are very solid and have depth.
Mike Mercer was the leading scorer on the Georgia team before he transferred. Anthony Crater transffered from Ohio State (this would be his third year at least) They have two long big men in 6-10 Rivas and 6-11 Famous. When the 6-10 Gilchrist comes back I think they will be even more dangerous.
USF is going to make some noise in the BET and NCAAs.
Couple things went bad, Monroe in foul trouble, Hoyas offense starting to exclusively settle for jump shots during USFs 23-5 run.
Also Benimon and Vaughn haven't recovered from the mauling they received from Anowaku, Rick Jakcson and Johnson. They have both been playing really bad.

Every board is saying how there team isn't a great team this year. Everyone has flaws. With the Hoyas it really comes down to a lack of depth at the 4 and 5. Simms really needs to be playing in a rotation with Benimon, Vauhgn, Monroe to buy us some more fouls.
