Dear Colleagues:
I write to announce, with appreciation for his work at Georgetown University, the departure of James M. Langley as Georgetown’s Vice President for Advancement.
Jim has made many contributions since coming to Georgetown in 2005. He has retained and expanded the ranks of dedicated and talented development professionals serving Georgetown in the Office of Advancement. He led the launch in July 2006 of the quiet phase of our capital fundraising campaign which has raised $558 million in cash and commitments to date. Jim conceived and implemented the “discovery initiative,” which renewed the University’s relationships with thousands of alumni. He helped Advancement develop a more substantive engagement with alumni of all ages, the impact of which was demonstrated in consistent record-setting attendance at the John Carroll Awards and alumni reunion weekends. Perhaps most significantly, Jim has helped everyone who cares about Georgetown see more clearly what we are capable of achieving through more sophisticated and ambitious advancement strategies.
To lead our advancement work during an interim period, I have asked R. Bartley Moore (F’87) and Paul R. O’Neill (C’86, G’96), to oversee the Office of Advancement. Bart will serve as interim Vice President for Advancement, and Paul will serve as interim Chief Operating Officer. Both are Georgetown alumni of significant private-sector experience and accomplishment whom we recruited back to the University in key leadership roles within the last 18 months. Bart has led the development of major strategic initiatives to support the capital campaign and has been responsible for articulating the case for both financial aid and faculty excellence fundraising efforts. Paul has worked with me and academic leaders to develop ideas for our future in public policy and is co-chairing the campaign planning steering group.
In these assignments, Bart and Paul have worked closely with the senior Advancement team and recognize both that team’s expertise and the challenge of the work they do on behalf of the University every day. I am confident that working together, Bart, Paul and the whole staff will sustain and improve the University’s performance in the critically important work of advancement.
In the current challenging environment for higher education fundraising, Georgetown remains more committed than ever to making a clear and persuasive case to donors for their support of the University’s mission. In the months ahead, we will continue building the momentum of the campaign in ways that are responsive to the realities of the day. In the course of this work, we will begin a national search for a permanent leader for the Office of Advancement.
I am personally very grateful to Jim for his service to the University. Please join me in thanking him for all he has accomplished at Georgetown and wishing him great success in his future endeavors.
Sincerely,
John J. DeGioia
