Interesting in that it looks like the TSA believes they have some control over security arrangements for flights coming into the US - but overseas countries don't seem to be sharing that view. apnews.myway.com/article/20100104/D9D0UI3O1.htmlCountries in Europe are looking at US demands before they decide what they are going to do. Guess that is reflective in what the folks coming into the US saw yesterday. Another interesting take by WSJ that the intelligence community is using a 4th ammendment standard for placing folks on the no fly list and this character somehow didn't meet that standard. online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704065404574636130361837754.htmlIn reality I can understand no making the no fly list (though I personally would have put him on it) but don't understand how the commentary from his dad didn't rise to the level sufficient to put him on the list requiring special attention plus intensive searches as the gubberment tried to say in the talk shows Sunday. That didn't make any sense to me.

The challenge for consular officers is that they cannot deny a visa to a potential terrorist unless another agency has put the name on a watchlist as such. Also note that U.S. Embassies house many different government agencies so that reporting one's son to an embassy is not necessarily the same thing as talking to the State Department. As has been noted, the problem is not with any one agency but with the difficulties in sharing relevant infomation across agencies and between governments.

Colleague flying back from Dusseldorf via Heathrow reports extreme security. Multiple checkpoints at Dusseldorf at his original point of departure and four separate checkpoints in Heathrow - despite being a transfer passenger. Final check was a complete breakdown/handsearch of all carry-ons. The entire bag was unpacked and searched by security staff.
