Great win tonight by the guys and I totally agree with the thread started earlier that this was a game last year that the Hoyas would have lost.
With that being said, our bench scored 0 points tonight. That will not get it done. The Big East is a grind every game and during that grind guys are gonna get tired and worn down, guys will find themselves in foul trouble, and guys could even get injured. We need someone on the bench to step up or the guys collectively to step and give us something. I dont wanna throw out a number of points/rebounds out there because it will just depend, but 0 is not gonna get it done against the upper echelon BE teams.
With that being said, the insertion of Henry/Hollis didnt hurt us, but it didnt help at all. Again, as a fan I am happy with the win, but still for us to be a more complete team we need something out our bench going forward.
Alright im out of here. Everyone be safe tonight and enjoy your new year.

Hollis just needs to shoot. Period. He's gonna be a stud. I was more wondering where Jerrelle was tonight. Is he injured again? The ankle still bothering him?
When the lead ballooned a little, I'd have liked to have seen Vee get some minutes as well. Henry did some really good things in the first that were probably negated by his tough stretch in the second but I would say that we definitely got a lift from the bench. The bench not hurting us IS, in fact, helpful. They tallied no points but that doesn't mean that they didn't contribute. I'm OK with what we got from the bench for the end of December. It'll come.

A couple of points --
1. We need to use the bench for it to score. I thought we could have used some Sanford in place of Clark in spots and Benimon to spell Monroe, who was clearly winded, and Vaughn. I'm not asking for 20 minutes of run, only 2 minutes here and 3 minutes there. Benimon seemed as capable of clearing glass and getting cheap putbacks as Vaughn and may have been better on the defensive glass at times.
2. Sims did hurt us in spots with failing to close off the base line but had some good passes/saves, so maybe he was neutral on balance.
3. Teams with depth in the post would be well-advised to throw different looks at Greg as Norm did.
Happy New Year to all.

Hollis needs to find some new ways to contribute. Thus far he has contributed through (1) some 3s, (2) feeding the post, and (3) some rebounding. We need something else from him (i.e. defense, BETTER rebounding, or shooting off the dribble and finishing around the rim).

So a guy off the bench hitting some 3's, passing into the post (which everyone on the team seems to struggle with) and some rebounding (which we sorely need) isn't enough? Plus, he plays decent defense for a freshman. You're looking in the wrong place for extra help.

I think the bench will be fine. Its not there yet, but I think by February we will have a solid 7 man rotation. Henry had some really good plays today, and some really bad ones, but I think as he get more comfortable we will see less of those bad plays and more of the good. Hollis does a lot of little things and I have seen a bunch of opportunities he has had to score but doesn't take them because hes not comfortable. The more he plays the more he will take advantage of those opportunities. I think Veeand Benimon will be able to occasionally provide some good things too, but haven't seen enough from them to be sure. Again, right now our bench isn't where we want it to be, but I think as time goes on it will be fine.

tas - you might be right. Maybe it's Benimon that can bring what I'm looking for.

Before this party is over, there are going to be times when guys are in foul trouble, hurt, not having a good night, or just need a blow. The bench is going to have to come through. Don't forget that we are talking really about only four possibilities: a sophomore, a "blue/gray" shirt freshman with an extra semester of practice and two pure freshmen, all of whom have little experience. Last night they did no harm; by March they should be dangerous. GO HOYAS!!! Beat the Blue Demons!

I was pretty unimpressed by the bench last night. Hollis is really looking like a freshman to me: tentative, causing some very costly turnovers, and leaving potential assists on the floor. Henry was a little better. I remember one play where he got burned badly on defense, but it was partly as a result of our defensive system, which asks him to come out and defend at the top of the key, leaving open the possibility that he won't be able to get back in time to close the lane, and that's exactly what happened. I put that on the scheme rather than on Henry, but it still was a negative.
So, while I'm disagreeing with the claim that they didn't hurt us, I'll grant that they didn't hurt us to the extent that we lost the game. And I'm not at all sure that Vee and Jerrelle would have been better; I just think there is a bigger drop in talent than we would like between the starting 5 and the bench, and bigger than it's been in other recent years.

Henry had some bad match ups on defense. But he looked pretty good to my eyes for the most part. Hollis just needs some confidence. Pull the trigger.
The bench will be fine. We have guys who can come in and help us and not hurt us. We won't always get a lot of scoring from them. But both henry and hollis can give us double digits in the right situation. Vee and Benimon can chip in points here and there too. I trust out bench.

sleepy, sims was aweful and almost cost us the game with his nonexistant defense. He should not see the floor in any competitive games. That being said hes a good kid and I hope he Finds it......

This is a very crude stat, based on one game's data, but last night the starters averaged one turnover every 19.4 minutes; the bench averaged one turnover every 8.3 minutes. I remember some of those leading directly to StJ's baskets. IMO that's what we have to correct in order to get them more playing time. I'm actually less worried about scoring per se.

Sims wasn't great but he certainly wasn't bad and had some nice plays. We need him this season.

Any chance that Vee and Jerelle sat to watch and learn from our 1st Big East game of the season? If not with intention then maybe there is some value for two freshmen to see "what it takes."

The most impressive part of this game was the continued emergence of Wright and Vaughn. Wright'g best all round game and Vaughn is the key to our improvement this year. AS for the bench, we have big trouble. Clark is starting to get fatigued( dropping hands on three pointers i is usually a sign of decreased leg lift ) The second half St John's run was directly related to our fatigue( not sure that was evident on TV but sure was at court side). Sims is slowly coming along but he was horrid in the second half on defense and it has nothing to do with our scheme. He hustles but just gets so out of position on D he is a liability despite his hustle, good hands and passing. He is not the answer for us now for a lift off the bench. Slowly getting better in spurts; he hopefully will be reliable by March. Vee needs to give a break to our guards. They can't hold up in a tough Big East game playing 40 minutes. I am not sure JTIII has the confidence in the play of Hollis, Benimon or Vee at this point in time. The 0 points from the bench is unfortunately a solid reflection of the current status of the reserves. Do we miss our 6'8" Ukranian a little now?

No, we don't miss Nikita. He stunk and wasn't ever going to be good. Hollis and Henry aren't doing anything right now either, but I at least have hope that someday they will.

We need to give Vee and Jerelle a few minutes- like 3 each half and it will help the starters finish the game
