Odd. So he's got something that has ended his career but is good to go for one more game?
Sounds to me like cancer and he's going to go for Chemo soon. Sucks

Official cited reason is his heart. sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=4772952When you've won a national championship, I can see deciding to bail if you really need it. With that said, I won't be surprised if he decides to come back in a year.

I don't know. Don't you think Meyer would have told him of the possibility of his stepping down for health reasons? Maybe Meyer doesn't think strongly of Strong or maybe Strong wanted no part of it considering that there would be enough scrutiny going his way because of his race. So why add to it by following an extremely successful and beloved coach at the University of Florida of all places?
Then again maybe Meyer didn't give any serious thought to stepping down until this week.

I realize that he probably has a very serious health problem and i wish him the best, but does he really have to have a live press conference on espn at 430? Could he not just stick with the press release he put already? I dont mean to suggest the whole thing is a publicity stunt, because i am sure it is not, but the whole "I'm gone!"/"Maybe not" thing is very Favre-ian in its vanity. Make a decision in private and release a statement, that is all that is necessary.

ESPN EXCERPTFlorida coach Urban Meyer, who announced Saturday night that he would step down after coaching the Gators in the Sugar Bowl on New Year's Day, is now having second thoughts about retirement and will instead take an indefinite leave of absence following the bowl game So what is it with FL these days? Is the "Indefinite Leave of Absence" the new "it" thing to do for high-priced Floridians in professional sports? Is there any chance this new trend might be extended to FL's pot-smoking automobile HiFi installers?

Meyer is the "Bubble Boy" of CFB. Went to the Jim Calhoun school of drawing attention to yourself when feeling underappreciated. Good thing Nosfaratu aka Jeremy Foley was by his side with Baby Jesus.

Urban Meyer is the consummate drama queen. How else does an also-ran fresh off an ass-whipping like they took from Bama stay in the news?

I love how a coach who has won two championships in the past four years and was one game away from playing for a third is an also ran.

Some thoughts:
1. Urban Meyer is a tool, but to the extent his health is in jeopardy, I wish him and his family the very best of luck in the coming months, years, etc.
2. I don't think someone of his stature -- and yes, he has a fair bit of stature in the sports world -- can just have a press release and not hold a press conference for this kind of news (the original news, that is). This is assuming he has made a decision...see below.
3. Having said that, yes, I know he loves the attention and he needs it badly now because no one is going to be watching his bowl game. (which is a no win for him anyhow; he can either lose it or he can do the expected against an interim coach).
4. This whole, "I'm out, I'm back in" nonsense has got to stop and it's not just Urban Meyer who does it. The f-ing Brett Favre School Of Keeping Yourself In The News When No One Wants To Pay Attention To You clearly has a number of alumni who have graduated with honors. If you weren't sure you'd be leaving, then don't issue a damn release and don't hold a damn presser. Stop wasting our time, you yutz.
5. Go Cincy.

I love how a coach who has won two championships in the past four years and was one game away from playing for a third is an also ran. How is he not an "also-ran"? He had a chance, got his ass kicked and now doesn't like playing in a game that does not matter. Thus he creates drama where none exists, and, suddenly people are talking about him again. Unless there has been some considerable change in his medical diagnosis over the last 48-72 hours, this screams "look at me, I'm still important."
