To keep this on the main page, one of my best Sports Machine memories was George's highlights montage after the 84 NCAA championship with Van Halen's "Jump" playing in the background. Every time I hear that song, I visualize a ferocious Michael Graham dunk in the tourney....
RIP, George Michael....

When NBC4 in Washington had to cut staff and planned to cut or reduce salaries of the sports department, George resigned instead of having to cut his subordinates. A great exit for a sports professional, though he was said to have been hard to work with.

In terms of highlights, he was ESPN before ESPN.

At the risk of sounding morbid, when I first saw this thread, I was thinking "You gotta have faith" .... obviously you are talking of a different George Michael, and now is not the time to joke. But I swear that was the first thing I thought of.

George Michael was a D.C. media legend. He was knowlegeable without being a know-it-all (as was Ken Beatrice at WMAL-630) and, to borrow a line from Jim Cramer, educated as well as entertained the audience.
TV news isn't what it was anymore, and neither is TV sports, as ESPN has largely eviscerated the concept of a local sports operation. The days of George Michael at WRC-4, Glenn Brenner at WDVM-9, Frank Herzog at WJLA-7, and an underrated Bernie Smilovitz at WTTG-5 was very much a golden era in local TV coverage.

This brings me back to watching Glenn Brenner at about 6:40 and George at about 6:50 each night growing up. Local sports is pretty much gone across the country, but we were extremely lucky. Still hard to believe that Brenner is gone, and this really ends the era. There can't be people like that anymore because the business won't allow it. And we really are missing out.

For old time Washingtonians, the original "Let's go to the videotape!" was uttered by Warner Wolf on Channel 9. Also the "Boo of the Week" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warner_Wolf

Loved the Sports Machine as a kid. And bump to the "ESPN before ESPN" comment. RIP.
