Rest in peace Abe. This is a true passing for the entire DC area. No Abe Pollin & his vision of a true downtown for DC, then no Phone Booth, no Gallery Place Chinatown (which, for you younger folks, used to be a no-man's land), no Business Improvement Districts, no DC renaissance as we know it. Condolences to Irene & the family. I wonder if Abe Pollin Day will again be held this December 3. www.verizoncenter.com/news/fenty_pollin_071203.shtml

God rest the soul of the man who brought that wonderful giant Pringle's Potato Chip to Largo and thus had an arena big enough for the world to admire the majesty of one Patrick Ewing.

Chinatown still blows my mind when I go there for games. It's like a mini-Georgetown. I remember watching a guy get pistol whipped on the streets before a weekend day game not too long ago.

Forget pistol whipping. I worked in the middle of Chinatown before the Verizon Center was built. Shootings, sometimes fatal, were not nearly as uncommon as anyone would hope (as were all other sorts of violent crime). I'm a fairly big guy, but I refused to work after sundown after being there for a while. Especially after one morning when I learned that a dead body had found about a block from my office building the night before...about an hour after I left work. It's a totally different environment now (obviously). True, there was some gentrification to get there -- which unfortunately meant sacrificing quite a bit of Chinatown's "Chinatown-ness" -- but it's definitely a great neighborhood to walk around in (though definitely not to drive around in). Farewell Abe. Glad you got to win one title at least.

Am I right in assuming that Leonsis is the guy most likely to take over majority control of the Wiz/VC?

Assuming that Ted Leonsis (owner of the Caps) purchases the Wizards as expected, I wonder how this will affect the Verizon Center's game scheduling policy. Considering that the Mystics, Wiz and Caps would all be run by the same owner, hopefully it would go more smoothly. Of course, the Hoyas could become an even lower priority...
Rest in Peace Abe Pollin.

A very sad moment. RIP Mr. Pollin. Thank you for all you did for the people of the DC/MD/VA area!

Sad day. To those of us from DC, he will be missed. Not many people in my lifetime have done more for the people in and around my hometown.
Hope he finds some angelic "fat ladies" singing for him.

I doubt the Hoyas would become a lower priority, considering that the Wiz and Caps would then essentially be playing "rent-free" when Ted looks at the big balance sheet, we'd have a certain luster as the primary cash customer bringing that guaranteed income into the operation. I hope Abe Pollin realizes how difficult it must be for current students to imagine not just the Chinatown/"Penn Quarter" area but just about everything east of Dupont, as an inaccessible void in the heart of the city, scarcely a dozen years ago. With luck, the Post or a local network will dig up a ton of archive media for their retrospectives this weekend and just show the contrast. Abe Pollin helped civilization reclaim a large portion of Northwest DC and it's amazing how little the city has done to acknowledge his contributions. Here you go: --Admin

That and the fact that Ted's a Georgetown Grad. I doubt we'd get a worse shake then we're already getting. If anything we might get a better shake.

The primary effect of Leonsis buying the rest of the Verizon center assets (i.e wizards and the building and the portions of the mystics and caps still owned by the pollin family) would not be in scheduling but in ticket sales. Currently the Caps receive no revenue (or very little) from tickets sold on the club level, hence the reason these tickets sell slower for caps games than other tickets and why there are always open sections that are the option of the WSE to open (the corwn royal section).
Of course net total revenues are not increased if the whole operation is owned by one person, but for georgetown it could lead to lower rent. This would be because leonsis would be receiving all the revenues from tickets sold at georgetown games (less the portion that goes to georgetown) and would therefore give him and his market staff more of an incentive to aide the georgetown marketing staff in promoting the games.
I dont think i wrote that very clearly but it is what it is. Of course i dont have any direct knowledge of existing contracts so i could be completely wrong.
In terms of scheduling it may mean fewer wizards games play before caps games on the same day (meaning more saturday afternoon caps games) to preserve the ice better, but i dont think the effect will be that big. The Caps might get more say in the scheduling because they are slightly more popular right now, but even with the wiz so bad they still get a good draw. I am excited to see how this plays out and what the ramifications are for the hoyas.

RIP Abe, as a kid growing up in DC, Chinatown was always kindof a joke but nowadays is a beautiful, bustling area of the city.
Maybe someone could propose a plan to Ted: Rebuild the old Convention Center into a smaller arena for the Hoyas and Mystics. I guess sharing with the Caps would be a better deal since apparently the Mystics always get attendance awards. Anyway a hocky/college bball stadium would be pretty nice and they could still leave some conference rooms.
