The race is on Monday. Both the men's and women's teams have qualified and will be in Indiana for the race. The men finished 10th last year, while the women finished one better in 9th place. This year the women will be hard pressed to duplicate that effort, since The Hoya reports that Katie McCafferty has a stress fracture in her heel. With Katie the Hoyas had a good shot to be top ten again. Without her it will take an amazing effort to do that. Top 20 should be doable. For the men a top 10 performance is a real possibility. With good footing on the course expect Bumbi to challenge for top 10 individually and Mark Dennin and Michael Krisch have been solid all year. Levi Miller finished an encouraging 9th in regionals, and I think he will be ready for a good race at Nationals, like he had last year. The fifth man will be a key. James Grimes ran a good race at regional, and Mike Banks was a no-show at regionals. With another good race at nationals and with Banks back, we should do well.
Hoya men declared for the race:
Banks, Bean, Bumbi, Dennin, Grimes, Krisch, Lumbar, Mason, Miller, Roberts, and Taye. Of course, only seven can compete, so we'll have to see who is healthy and running well this week. The Hoyas should be well rested, as they did not have a busy season this year, and slowed it down during regionals.
Hoya women declared for the race:
Borduin, Gallo, L. Gregory, M. Gregory, Infeld, Jones, Kasper, LaBeaud, McCafferty, L. Ogrodnick, A. Ogrodnick, Schneider, Sobrinski, Walsh, Whalen. Again only seven of these runners will participate.
Georgetown usually has their B teams participate in the IC4A and ECAC meets held today. But it doesn't look as if any runners participated.
I expect some of the freshmen men will participate in the USA Juniors XC meet this year, as they have been held out completely. They could have been of help for the nationals, but they will form a nucleus of our XC team for the next four years.

Hopefully Katie can run at Nationals. The Hoya says she was held out due to the start of a stress fracture so hopefully this was just precautionary. Regardless, good luck to both the men's and women's teams.

Oh man, at first I thought the thread was straight up, "NCAA Champs 2009" and I was so friggin' excited and simply shocked, assuming the race was today...but then I saw it was simply a preview (which I greatly appreciate as this is a sport that gets little to no appreciation and is simply one of the most consistently good sports on campus). Good luck to all of the runners and let's bring home some hardware!!!

Sorry, hsaxa2010. That would have been great, exceeding all our expectations. I think the best that we can hope for tomorrow is to get one of the teams top 10. Good luck to the teams.

Early results from the men's race today had Chelanga from Liberty (and Kenya) setting the course record by 22 seconds and winning the race. Oklahoma State won the team title. Stanford, #1 in the last poll, might not have finished in the top 5. No other results yet.

Another unconfirmed report; this one a bit better: Bumbi finished about 8th place, another All-American honor for Andrew!

Men we're in 5th place at the half way mark--if true somebody must have dropped out again

Top 10 men:
1) Oklahoma St. 2) Oregon 3) Alabama 4) Northern Arizona 5) William & Mary 6) Colorado 7) Wisconsin 8) New Mexico 9) Iona 10) Stanford
My 2nd favorite team, the Portland Pilots, was ranked #4 coming in, so they suffered also.
If we were truly in 5th at half way, that is very disappointing, if we did truly finish 25th. Still no deep results almost two hours after the race.
In the women's race three teams from our region finished in the top six or seven.

The good news for the women is that Emily Infeld duplicated Bumbi's 8th place finish, and was awarded All-American honors. The not so good news is that the women finished 21st. They were seriously hurt by Katie's injury.
8. Emily Infeld 20:08 62. Natasha LaBeaud 21:10 82. Emily Jones 21:17 152. Kirsten Kasper 21:57 191. Rachel Schneider 22:36 201. Lise Ogrodnick 22:56 204. Marcie Sobrinski 23:06
Women total 495 pts.

Well, Bumbi and Mike Krisch did great:
8. Bumbi 29:39.1 33. Krisch 30:18.3 140. Levi Miller 31:17.6 203. James Grimes 31:57.7 208. Mike Banks 32:07.6 224. Mark Dennin 32:36.5 - this was Mark's worst race of the year.

Stanford, #1 in the last poll, might not have finished in the top 5. No other results yet. I'll ask - why is it so hard to get results? For the MCM, you know the official time twenty minutes after someone's finished. Why are the NCAAs so convoluted?

Exorcist, that was driving track fans crazy, the slowness of results. Even when they had them posted, they had the Div II results for the men's team results. They need somebody who knows computers.
Well, a bit of relief as the men finished 22nd with 485 points. Again, the women beat the men by one place, although both faded badly from their previous efforts. For the Big East teams Villanova men (whom we had beaten in both BE and Regionals) finished 11th (therefore, showing you where we should have been), Syracuse finished 14th and Providence 20th. The Hoyas and Syracuse ran poorly.
Post mortem: I guess Mike Banks was not completely recovered from whatever caused him to miss regionals; it was too long a season from Mark Dennin, as he ran very well in his meets up to here (a peaking problem, which causes grief for us); I was expecting a better performance for Levi, who was an All-American last year. I think James Grimes did what was expected of him. And where was our 7th man?

Was able to catch the women's race on VS this afternoon. Crazy what happened to the Colorado runner, who seemed to be the favorite. She was in 1st, pacing with a Florida State runner, then faded quickly early in the race, got passed, fell down rather disturbingly at one point, but got back up and finished the race, well behind. Hope she is OK, strange occurrence.
While the results seem a bit disappointing for both the men and the women, still nice to see us finishing competitively at the NCAA's. Wish more people on campus knew we have a couple All-Americans, and that the programs are top 25-caliber (and possibly better, do not know our results the last few seasons).
However, I did not like was seeing Villanova win the women's championship. Boo.

The Colorado runner, Jenny Barringer, was the big favorite. She had broken four minutes in the 1500m last summer (equivalent of a 4:20 mile). She set the American record in the 3000SC and was on the Olympic team. The FSU runner was no slouch, as she is a top Dutch 1500m runner. Jenny was supposed to win this race by a lot. But the race was from the bizzaro world, as Bizzari from Illinois took avantage of the happenings and won the race. Jenny finished in 21:47 for about 140th place (beaten by three Hoyas). There is no predicting how you will feel on race day. I think everybody was conceding the race to Jenny (maybe not the FSU runner).
Besides Andrew Bumbalough and Emily Infeld, Michael Krisch brought home All-American honors.
Last year both men's and women's team were in the top 10.
