Wow. I knew Western Massachusetts was rural, but some of these counties are West Texas-like in their lack of population. Only 131 people voted in Hawley County tonight.
The Rs have it by 7 percentage points right now according to the NYT website (I'm avoiding cable tonight). Looks like Brown is winning the Boston exurbs and some rural areas, while Coakley is narrowly winning the Boston suburbs. (Bay Staters, feel free to correct my Mass. geography.) Looks like Boz and DanMcQ's prediction is coming true: Coakley needs to pound Brown in the cities to come back and win.

When I started typing Boston was still at 0% reporting according to the Times widget. It looks like you're correct, and it's probably safe to call the race for Brown.

Norah O'Donnell just came on and said that Coakley was in the Caribbean between the middle of December and January 5th. Literally.

Wow. Simply a horrid showing by the Dems.
A year ago, on Inauguration Day, I thought passing comprehensive health care reform was a done deal.
Now it's just done.

Coakley is up to 65% in Boston. Maybe not enough, but the late sample from Boston seems to be tracking her way. Only 3% of Cambridge is in, with Coakley at 87% there, notwithstanding the police officer whose name I forget.

It's ridiculous - they had it done! They could just vote the Senate bill through in the House, but they are too scared and are going to come up with something tiny and minimal that won't do a thing about recission or insurance companies dumping people - in other words nothing that's going to help anyone
Coakley just conceded at 9:15! Are you kidding me? The vote isn't even in yet! She's done some pretty irresponsible things, but come on - Owens learned in NY-23 that you don't concede till it is over. Thanks for helping the party out by drawing this out a little Martha.

I don't like the concession from the point of view that it also destroys the argument behind the automatic recount if this gets within .5% and follows a report from Brown's camp that the election would be close.
If anything, maybe a Brown win destroys a Republican shibboleth as to the state...err Commonwealth... of Massachusetts, which also elected Mitt Romney, a similarly undistinguished public figure. The garbage about "Massachusetts liberals" grows tiresome.

I want to see the Dems follow their legislative agenda like the Republicans did with Bush. Make one of the Republican Senators ACTUALLY STAND UP AND FILIBUSTER. If a Republican (or several) follows through and filibusters, then fine—that's how the process works, and the Dems lose. But stop conceding defeat without making the other side even stand up. The defeatist attitude of Dems who still have a 59-41 edge is the most appalling pansy-ass bull ever.

This is the same crowd that has thrice declared defeat in Iraq.

Wow. Simply a horrid showing by the Dems. A year ago, on Inauguration Day, I thought passing comprehensive health care reform was a done deal. Now it's just done. It's really too bad that the Democrats and their Super Majority couldn't figure out a bill that wasn't so much worse than the current system that it cost them Ted Kennedy's seat in Massachusetts. Coakley was an awful candidate, obviously, but equally extreme states have elected equally awful candidates--it really should not have mattered in Massachusetts w/o the national party doing such a poor job w/ their super majority.

I agree that the Dems should make the Rebublicans acutally fillibuster, but Conrad will turn against HCR at the first opportunity. Since Dorgan is retiring, I think he is a safe vote. Next Jan his successor will likely be former governor Hoeven (R) that is, unless Eddie S decides to run. What I'd like to see is that the House just votes yes on the Senate bill and get on with it. I guess I'm just afraid that the left will blow it.

Are you sure they still have the votes in the House? That's what burns me up. Those Blue Dogs aren't going to be getting any special tea party points for voting for it the first time but then not actually following through and making it law. That's on their record, and their opponent is going to hammer them with that. It's a double whammy if it doesn't pass because they get 0 credit for helping anyone.

Senator Brown.
Astounding.
93% of precincts reporting - Brown with 52% and Coakley with 47%. Brown's lead is greater than the number of outstanding absentee ballots.
