coming in on the Amtrak for this - can't wait to see the guys live
clark covers Brooks and gets the shut down, our big men eat Allen's pre-season All A-10 honors for a late lunch and they just can't get their new guys going in time to match our energy at home.
for the record, there is NOT ONE SINGLE VALID EXCUSE FOR A GU UNDERGRAD TO MISS THIS GAME AND WE WILL NEED YOU THERE (cause a lot of lame alum's aren't taking this thing seriously yet). It is 4 PM on a Tuesday and finals aren't for three weeks - there is NOTHING that you might have on your schedule that should take precedent over welcoming your 09-10 Hoyas onto the Phone Both phloor and setting the tone for fan support this season.
DO IT

This will be an interesting matchup. Temple is coming off two straight A-10 Tournament titles and NCAA Tournament appearances, but lost their star Dionte Christmas (19.5 ppg) to graduation. Because of that, they're not projected to make the Tournament this year, but they still could be a solid team. Have not seen them play in recent years. Anybody know if they still use that crazy matchup zone D that was a trademark of the Chaney teams?
They're obviously better than Tulane, so I expect a close, entertaining game that we pull out in the end. I liked what I saw/heard on Friday night, but it's one game, let's not get ahead of ourselves. It's a marathon, not a sprint. Baby steps.
Also, hope it's a decent crowd too, though I expect a lot of late arrivers. I, on the other hand, will be there before tip-off, holding it down in my new seats in Section 119. Wonder if we're gonna use the same We Are Georgetown song as part of the intro video, as we have the past two years. My money is that we will. Also looking forward to seeing our new uni's in action.
Oh, and FWIW, Temple is playing their season opener right now at Delaware, and is up 31-14 in the first half.

Judging from their contributors in the game against Delaware today, they are a pretty big team in their top 6. They started a 3 guard lineup but top 5 scorers are 6'4, 6'4, 6'9, 6'9, 6'11

This should be a good test for the Hoyas as Temple is coached by Fran Dumphy, who knows how to coach against the Princeton offense. He coached for 17 years at Penn, during which time he had to coach against Pete Carril at least 14 times and JT3 at least 8 times. Temple matches up well with Georgetown's size but lacks depth.

Yep, it's an Ivy rematch. This has all the hallmarks of a possible upset: - Coaching familiarity
- Early in the season
- Despite being a dog, they have size
- Not even one of our top 3 marquee OOC matchups

Also, it's at an odd time during the day, when teams generally aren't used to having a game scheduled. I made the joke when someone asked when was the last time we played a mid-afternoon home game that it was alllllllll the way back to our last home game against Depaul in March. Well, you saw how ugly that game was (taking into account a number of other factors that helped produce that ugly display). This type of scheduling I like from Coach though. You're not going to learn a whole lot from or be tested by cupcakes in the first few games, and it's probably a bit ambitious to start off with a ranked team. So you meet it halfway--give the team a true road game in a tougher environment and a home game against a strong member of a mid-major-plus conference. We'll learn more about the team in these games that are at least competitive in the second half than we would against Jacksonville, Hartford, etc.* The opening weeks schedule I like the most was in 2006--the Navy/JMU road games back to back and the home game against Vanderbilt. (*Not that we mopped the floor with either of those teams.)

FYI, I think McDonough is worried about how we'll look on ESPN:
Georgetown Faculty & Staff,
The Georgetown Hoyas Men's Basketball team plays its 2009-2010 home opener at Verizon Center next Tuesday, November 17! As part of ESPN's "24 Hours of Basketball" broadcast, this game has a special tipoff time of 4:00 p.m.
In conjunction with GU Wellness and in appreciation for all that you do for Georgetown University, the Georgetown Department of Athletics is offering complimentary tickets to this game for all Georgetown Faculty & Staff members. To pick up your complimentary vouchers for admission, visit the McDonough Arena Box office weekdays 1:00 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. All vouchers must be claimed by this Friday, November 13 by the close of business. There is no limit to the number of complimentary vouchers you can claim, so bring family, friends and colleagues to support the Hoyas in their home opener! Please consult your work supervisor as necessary.
We look forward to seeing you at the Verizon Center on Tuesday, November 17!

(*Not that we mopped the floor with either of those teams.) Agreed. This is why I really wish we had made William & Mary a home-and-home series - there's a real benefit to early road games against decent opponents (based on their game against UConn, I'm inclined to say that W&M is more than decent, but I'm willing to stretch the definition pretty wide. Not Savannah State wide, though ). Plus, it makes for an easy and fun early road trip - JMU was sparsely attended and a heart attack of a game, but still quite enjoyable, and Navy was memorable as well. I'd love to see us play @richmond, @vcu, @penn or Drexel or LaSalle, @umbc, etc.

I'm glad that GU is trying to do something to fill up Verizon, because I just can't envision too many people there for this game. Such an awkward time for tip, so I doubt anyone not intimately connected with the university is going to skip out on work for it. Hopefully the students are there in full force to make up for it.

I don't know how you don't skip work for this. It's only an hour before the work day ends just leave an hour and a half early. I feel like most hoyas can skip out of work early. Use some sick time if you have to. It's the HOME OPENER! It's your first chance to seee the game in person. You'd have to be crazy to skip this or not a true fan. Unless you have a meeting just cut out early and stay late on wednesday.

HSB, I recognize that anyone who is a dedicated fan will make it to this game. Unfortunately, because GU doesn't have the alumni base of a big state school, we have to rely on a lot of people who are not "true fans" to fill up our 20k+ arena. I'll be there, the students better be there, but as for the rest, I doubt we will have a big showing.

I would like to point out my west coast strategy.
Since most of the weekday games are at 4 pm, I have a lot of personal appointments. My employer may or may not suspect my interest in college basketball, but they are much too polite to inquire as to what may be a medical issue.
Enjoy.
