Dick "Hoops" Weiss had 2 articles-- his college BB preview and a piece about Calipari and Kentucky--in the NY Daily News on Sunday.
No GU in his top 25; No Monroe on his 3 All-American Teams but in the Kentucky piece, he mentioned the slogan on the t-shirts they're selling in Lexington: ENVY OUR PAST, FEAR OUR FUTURE.
Didn't we have something similar a few years ago? The irony with Cal and Kentucky is that the future they fear is vacating a final four trip, scholarship restirctions and Cal getting out of town in front of an investigation.

That would be, um, the slogan for this year.

So did we lift it from Kentucky or are they lifting it from us?

More likely they lifted it from us, but it's possible we both came up with the same(similar) idea at the same time. Both shirts were unveiled at Midnight Madness, but our slogan options had been online for months. I suppose you could grill st.pete since he's the one who submitted that slogan.

In response to your anticipated grilling - I didn't steal it from Kentucky. I tried to think up something that combined the past with a forward-looking statement about how we were superior. Those tend to do well as t-shirt slogans (i.e. forgotten/remind them). I submitted it a while ago. So long ago, I forgot that I had done it until I got a text message telling me that my slogan won the contest.
Its completely possible that someone at Kentucky came up with the same thing independent of us. I think its a bit self-important to think that a Kentucky fan needed to come up with a t-shirt slogan and stole there's from us. Also, thought you guys might be interested, Calipari pays in $10s and $20s in a paper bag...

Judge Saul Streit on Kentucky basketball ca. 1951:
“I found covert subsidization of players, ruthless exploitation of athletes, cribbing at examinations, ‘illegal’ recruiting, a reckless disregard of the physical welfare, matriculation of unqualified students, demoralization of the athletes by the coach, alumni, and townspeople and the flagrant abuse of the athletic scholarship.” He said that Rupp "failed in his duty to observe the amateur rules, to build character, and to protect the morals and health of his charges."
If that's the past we should envy... which, by the way, also included the NCAA cancelling UK's entire '52-'53 season... Cal should fit right in...

It was Kentucky's slogan soon after Calipari was hired...so it was their concept and we "borrowed" it. I think it is a stupid slogan, but I also thought the other ones were garbage, so if you don't have anything constructive to say...you know.
